The story about the children barging in was in 2019 (or maybe 2018). He was doing a Skype interview on the news (BBC I think, might have been BBC America, actually). His children come in, and the woman who came in after the children was his wife, but because she’s a minority everyone assumed it was a nanny or housekeeper of some sort. Not only was it a funny incident, but also was a lesson in checking white privilege because everyone assumed a woman of color was the hired help.

I have something to ask! Why I feel so dumb now? Is there a difference in these puzzles between a representative of the English speaking world and nonenglishspeaking world? Here I will discuss why I thought I would be very good in these crosswords and why I now think, I actually barely understand it. Expectations: 1) Excellent in Bulgarian crosswords. But they are nothing like that thing above. 2) Very good at sudokuish puzzles. A chessplayer also. I follow the channel but not for the crosswords. 3) A mathematician and very good at logic. I hate brute memorizing. So not very good at formulas. But the thinking part is my power. 4) A quiz maker(producer) and one of the top quizzers in my hometown(30k population). Very broad common knowledge and an overall intellectual. 5) Good in linguistics also. An unprofessional writer(mainly poetry). Know several languages including English. Reality: I think I suck at this because English is not so intuitive to me. I did not even understood how it works well. Otherwise, I understand really well the sudoku videos. But this thing is strange. Also I am not really good at USA and UK politics and news. In fact not really following the Bulgarian news also. I am not good in the trivial things. How do you think is it because I am not from the English world or I am just dumb? :D
@kevinthurlow8055
@kevinthurlow8055 3 жыл бұрын
Not dumb! Crosswords are even more difficult in other languages. Partly, English ones often rely on puns or slang, which are not easy to follow (although your English clearly is excellent). Also, if these clues are about events in Britain, you are entitled not to know about them. I think I am OK at crosswords and managed to do some easy French ones years ago, but I am not trying Bulgarian!
@QWDreaming
@QWDreaming 3 жыл бұрын
Cryptic crosswords have a 'language' of their own; you will struggle to solve one in a typical British newspaper without having a good grasp of this strange code. Many abbreviations and obfuscated references to the letters in the answer have been used so often that they are considered easy or obvious to an experienced solver (for example the word 'ring' representing the letter 'O'). However to a novice, they will be extremely difficult to crack.
@yiotatort
@yiotatort 3 жыл бұрын
Your English while very good is not perfect, but I still feel certain that if you spent some time and learned about cryptic crosswords and the unusual methodology, you'd do just fine especially with your background in linguistics. I found that the Cryptic crossword article on Wikipedia to be really helpful in understanding what was going on in these videos, you may find it to be of help. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryptic_crossword
@user-tf6pg7jj6c
@user-tf6pg7jj6c 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you, people! I am kind of calmed down now. I will consider whether learning the craft of English type crosswords would be worthwhile to me. I was interested in the English ones due to the shortage of quality and variety of Bulgarian ones on the internet. In fact, I came across this channel because of the crosswords a long time ago, but ironically this became the only type of CtC content I do not watch and like. But just because I do not understand it. If someone is peculiar I will discuss briefly the Bulgarian type of crosswords. In contrast to the probably too abstract English type, the Bulgarian ones tend to be too plain. There seem to be some unwritten rules also. Like huge prevalence of the nouns. Many dictionary cues. The biggest flaw is probably the frequent repetition of some "dumb" words. Like archaisms, some really specific stuff like "Bus stop in Tajikistan"(This is actually a common satirical hyperbolarization of the Bulgarian cues, but close to reality) and some words which are probably made for and only ever used in crosswords. I guess it is an analog to the "O" ring example which was given to me. It is hard to find a very high-quality Bulgarian crossword. Which lacks this flaw. They are usually similar in quality to a computer-generated sudoku.

In the original German pronunciation it's actually something like "ul-dee" (with the first sound pronunced short and crisp like the u in but), not "all-dee". Also, "Lidl" isn't "Liddl", but more like "Leedle" in German. Even more counterintuitive for English speakers is the German supermarket brand of "REWE", wich doesn't rhyme with Crewe, but goes like "re-ve", with the e's pronounced like in "ready".

This brilliant crossword appeared in the British newspaper "The Independent" which depends for its readership on the woke brigade. It is as independent as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea or the late Deutsche Demokratische Republik were ever democratic 😉.

@@amoswittenbergsmusings But it does have the advantage that it is very cheap and has a 4-page puzzle pull-out every day (sudoku, crossword, codeword, etc.) You can pull the puzzles out and ignore the rest!

@@kevinthurlow8055 ‘The Independent’ has been online-only for several years: it no longer has any pages you can pull out. Are you thinking of the ‘I’, a separate newspaper?

"Matt" is Matt Hancock, our disastrous Health Secretary, who infuriates me by signing all the official government lockdown advice letters with just his first name, as if we're mates.

Kind of sad that I'm so impressed by how much Simon knows about US politics. I'll bet most Americans couldn't even name Britain's PM.

Which is why I don't subscribe to The Independent - not because of the crossword which is actually fairly easy.

"The 'Cryptic' Of 2020" it should say, (or "Cryptic Crossword"). Too much literary license throwin' around "Crossword" alone. [A Crossword is a different puzzle] [[Simon reigned it in calling it a "Cryptic Crossword" at the beginning though. Good job, Simon ]] What are the rules for these, anyway? (The 1st letter of the 3rd or 4th word, along with an anagram sometimes is part of them?) For all us Crossword doers, that's liable to be an easier one, I don't know. Cool I guess though. [[For someone referencing a 2020 event on each and every clue in this puzzle actually makes it easier (because you know it's comin) lol]] [[Much much much less clues than a Crossword (these open Cryptic Crosswords are). Crosswords are entirely full (except for a few regions) and probably 104 to 114 across AND down for the Sunday ones. How many is this? 25 across and down (totally open and airy) ? 30 tops I bet. Different rules ;) 😂😎 What are the rules for these though ? I'll watch along and get an idea (sounds a little easier though). I'm gettin' an idea how they work watching. Thanks, Simon.

As I'm not British and mostly ignore medical advice provided by my own government (where it contradicts the CDC/WHO) I had no idea what this was talking about. Thank you for providing a search hint. That was really, really terrible.

@8:49 (Simon wondering who or what "Harding" meant {and him saying "it was getting quite political" a second ago} AND a "G" in the clue) Simon, you're lucky you didn't know of ''Warren G. Harding" a past President of the United States (and I think he caroused around with the women "lying down" a lot (if ya know what I mean) [[a "a womanizer, I think he was known for]] further confusing you because the clue had "ascendant" (ascending, not lying-down lol) in one of those words. Not to mention, "Tonya Harding" (but that would have been a news event during the Olympics of 1998 or something (I forget) lol. Lucky you didn't know about that infamous President though (he was a real something or other he was only known for, so largely forgotten) lol 😂😎 Answer was ''Geton" (but that's awfully close to a "Baton" which is prob similar to what Tonya Harding's boyfriend may have hit Nancy Kerrigan in the knee with lol). They were Figure Skaters during that Olympics (so Figure Skating event) and a "Baton" was used during the Relay Medley races in the summer Olympics lol). "Warren G. Harding" is the 1st thing that came to my mind though, ( I think he was known to have wild parties or something at the White House) he wasn't known for much else so largely forgotten (we just learned about his name in school, [[before "Prohibition" I think]] that's all) ;) 😂😎
