The actor who plays Funboy is the one who actually shot Brandon Lee. His death was a result of a series of unfortunate events. On a movie set there is prop ammunition ( this is ammunition that looks like live ammo but has no powder charge or primer) and blanks ( These are self explanatory). Anyway, they needed more prop ammo for Funboy's .44 magnum handgun so someone bought live ammo, separated the bullets out, emptied the powder and reseated the bullets. This person failed to remove the primers. Primers are like caps for a toy gun the are seated in the rear of the cartridge and what the hammer strikes to ignite the powder charge. At one point during filming someone pull the trigger on Funboy's gun on one of these prop rounds and the primer went off. Nothing was suppose to happen so the gun was inspected and they all thought it was a blank round. What they didn't notice was that the primer had enough pressure to shoot the bullet out of the cartridge and it stopped in the barrel. Blank rounds were loaded into the gun for a scene where Funboy was suppose to shoot Eric in the chest. Michael Massee, the actor playing Funboy, pulled the trigger, the blank round went off and the pressure from the round had enough force to send the bullet out of the barrel and it hit Brandon in the chest. It was a very unfortunate accident but also very preventable if they had followed safety procedures.

Michael Masse didn't work for years after that. Not because he was shunned or anything, he was just guilt ridden and traumatized and he couldn't handle being on a movie set and the endless questions reliving it in any interview he'd have to do to promote anything he was in.

Something similar happened to an actor in the 80s Jon-Erik Hexum. People thought he would be the next young big star, he had good looks, could act, could do action and a tragedy like this happened as well. Only in his case, they were not shooting, they were just playing around before shooting. And he got killed.

Yeah, they only needed prop bullets cus it was a revolver and the shot was from the front, so you can see if they're using normal blanks. Any other gun, shot from any other angle, and it wouldn't have happened. Or they coulda just removed the primers. The only reason the actor even pulled the trigger is cus it was a revolver, so we needed to see the hammer fall. It all seems like people use revolvers so little in movies now that the armory guys have forgotten how it used to be done. Hell, in Westerns, I'm pretty sure they just used regular blanks, and to Hell with the audience not noticing the lack of visible bullets

Brandon actually completed about 90% of the film (8 days left) before dying. He did all the make-up scenes first so that the final weeks of shooting he would be able to just relax. The scene where he actually gets shot is in the loft with his girlfriend before he gets thrown out the window. It was a prop gun that wasn't cleaned properly and shot out a piece of metal that was lodged in the barrell (squib load). The metal hit Brandon and stuck in his spine or spleen. He died at the hospital six hours later.
@mikeduncan3953
@mikeduncan3953 Жыл бұрын
It was actually a dummy bullet that was stuck in there. They are usually used for close up shots, big bullet with a tiny amount of powder so that the projectile comes out with almost no velocity. But with that stuck in the barrel the loaded the gun with a blank, which is no projective, but lots of gunpowder to give you those big muzzle flashes. Poor Brandon never had a chance. And yeah, while there were no doubt scenes shot before his death with stuntmen or doubles just like most movies, the only scenes they needed to shoot after his death using doubles and tricks were any scenes in the apartment building during the "present".
@ApacheGamer
@ApacheGamer Жыл бұрын
If I remember correctly the only scene they never finished was the loft scene. He was held with his arms stretched out and shot. That is where he was killed. During the present day scene where he keeps having flashbacks there's a flash where the next part of the scene was supposed to be where they throw him out the window. Instead it just flashes and he steps back towards the camera. The scene where he is falling and where he is dead on the ground was body double and CGI, and they cut the part with the four throwing him out the window. Everything else he was able to finish. It was literally that one flashback scene that had to be changed and cut.

Wow ! Great bit of Trivia there ! Did not know that. Thanks for that. If I remember correctly, they filmed at least 90% of the film, maybe more. The day Brandon Lee died, was only a few weeks away from his wedding day, so filming was going to be wrapped up by then. Some more interesting trivia, Brandon’s first acting role on film (he had done some plays) was a return of Kung Fu with David Carradine in 1985, in Kung Fu: The Movie. Which was quite ironic, since the series was an idea created by Bruce Lee, and which he would star in, pitched to the studios, but they turned him down, stole the idea and gave Carradine the starring role. Carradine didn’t have “Kung Fu” training at the time, and obviously Bruce Lee was a Kung Fu expert. So that definitely hurt Bruce, since the series became a hit. I watched Brandon in that movie, since I was such a Bruce Lee fan. He was good. Then he made a movie in Hong Kong, and then several other B type movies. But man, the Crow, I truly feel that was his breakout role, I think he would’ve been a HUGE action star after that. I was devastated when he died, because I really liked how he played that part, supposedly that was a 3 movie deal to do Crow movies.

On the VHS I had of this there is a promotional interview Brandon filmed for the film. It is eerie to watch and poignant. He discusses how time seems limitless, but how many times will you remember a cherished childhood memory, integral to your person? Four or five times more? How many more times will you watch the full moon rise? 20? Eric has had the preciousness of each moment made apparent to him. Hearing Brandon discuss the fleeting nature of life and how death can strike at any time puts goosebumps on my neck even 30 years after I heard them.

***Long ass comment. Grab some popcorn*** So, here is what happened. They filmed an insert shot of actor Michael Massee loading bullets into his revolver. The bullets were dummy rounds that had been taken apart and emptied of powder. The rounds had not had their primers removed either, so it is thought that the round must have come loose from the casing when someone dry fired it. The force from the primer was enough to push it loose from the casing and it ended up lodged in the barrel. To save money, the line producer started sending people home that night instead of paying OT. One of the people he sent home was the armorer, since there would be no more shots involving bullets and just blanks and squibs. They prepped the gun for the shot where Massee shoots Lee by loading it with blanks and handing it to Massee. No one visually inspected the barrel to make sure it was clear. They got set, and the director called action. Lee walked through a door into frame and everyone acted out the scene. At the end of it Massee pulled the trigger and the blank material propelled the .44 round out of that barrel at about half the force that a real round would have. It entered Lee's abdomen and tore through some organs before coming to rest against his spine. He fell backward instead of forward like he was supposed to. The director called cut and the stunt coordinator checked on him. He had no idea he was actually shot, but he saw he was passed out and breathing hard. They called an ambulance and Lee was taken to the hospital. His heart stopped before he got there, but they were able to keep it beating either because they got it going again, or through manual compressions. He went in for surgery. They tried to repair the damage done, but there was just too much. They declared him dead after 6 hours of emergency surgery. He was 28. The local police and district attorney ruled that Lee's death was due to negligence and not foul play. The producers were sued by Lee's family and fiancé. Director Alex Proyas held onto the footage of Lee's death until all the lawsuits and official inquiries were over. He then burned the footage so nobody can see it; unlike Vic Morrow's and the two small children whose death footage was leaked to the public (and available right here on KZfaq if you're morbidly curious). The film was completed using a body double and digitally lifting Lee's face from outtakes and placing it over the double's face. They had to tweak the script a bit and condense certain parts. They also had to remove an entire subplot with actor Michael Berryman because there was no way to do it with Lee gone. Yet, they found a way to complete it and honor his memory. The film is sad because of how much potential Lee had, but it certainly is great film to be remembered by.

The Crow is among my top movies. Saw it in the theater with my friends when it first came out. The shot of Eric igniting the crow symbol after T-bird dies is the image that always comes to mind whenever I think of this film. The soundtrack is one I still listen to often. The movie was popular among players of the various "World of Darkness" Tabletop RPGs published by White Wolf, since Detroit as depicted in this film pretty much screams "gothic-punk", the term that White Wolf always used to describe the feel of their setting. At the time, my friends and I were fans of their recently released game "Mage: the Ascension". We quickly noticed that several of the alchemical symbols that were used to represent the Nine Spheres in Mage were also used as graffiti in this film, in the exterior shots around Eric's apartment building (especially when he first returns and the crow is leading him around). That pretty much guaranteed that we treated this movie as if it *was* set in the World of Darkness, and that Mages probably existed somewhere off screen. We apparently weren't alone; fans soon wrote up character types that represented people like Eric in the game.

I don't know if anyone else mentioned it, but a pretty significant character was actually cut out of the movie because of Brandon's death. The Skull Cowboy was originally the one that guided Eric after he was brought back from the dead. If it seems a little choppy at the end, with the crow being the sole source of Eric's powers and shooting it severing his connection, it's because the Skull Cowboy originally informed him that he had already completed his mission of avenging himself and Shelley, and told him not to interfere with the living. When Eric refuses, he loses his invincibility. And the Skull Cowboy was played by none other than Michael Berryman, of 'The Hills Have Eyes' fame! They were never able to complete the dialogue scenes he had with Brandon because of his death, so his character was just cut out of the film. Berryman only had a few moments with Brandon and a couple scenes, but you could tell Brandon's death left him shaken for life. He gave an interview just a few years ago on The Last Drive-In's 'Dinners of Death' marathon, and he still seems haunted by it, and he rightfully called out the blatant neglect on set that caused the tragedy. I don't think the scenes are necessary in the film, but they definitely would have explained a lot, and given us further insight into the 'rules' here. And it also paints the afterlife as a bit harsh towards the living, adding to the bleak tone. The Skull Cowboy can see here that Sarah is in danger, but is willing to let her die potentially, because it's not Eric's mission. And in this version the Skull Cowboy didn't know that Top Dollar was the one ultimately responsible for their deaths, so in a way, he would have been discouraging Eric from completing his mission without knowing it. I don't think one version is necessarily superior over the other, but it's interesting to imagine what would have been. And it definitely would have cut down the whole 'the crow is his weakness!' thing that the sequels grossly exploited, to their detriment.

Michael Massee, the actor of Funboy, was the one who shot Brandon Lee. According to interviews with him the script for the scene didn´t even have a gun in it, but the director Alex Proyas changed it all of a sudden. There are different versions of what exactly happened, one says it was a real bullet, the other one that there were metal splints in the barrel. Massee was afterwards not able work for a year. It is a bit creepy that this very film made him prominent, so that when he came back to acting he got lots of small roles.

On a movie set, there are dummy bullets and there are blanks. The dummy bullets are just regular bullets with no gunpowder, the blanks have powder but no slug to fire. Back when this was made, they used one gun for for both situations. The gun was originally loaded with dummies and when they reloaded it with blanks, one of the slugs from the dummy bullets came off and stayed in the chamber. So when the gun was fired, the blank propelled the slug into Brandon. A tragic mishap.

That's kind of like what I heard. I heard they shot live fire the day before the Funboy scene and for whatever reason, the armorer was not on set at the time so the firearms duty fell to the propmaster. Evidently, the gun had not been cleaned properly and even though it was loaded with a blank it was enough to propel a fragment that was stuck from the previous day.

It came out in 1994. So it's not quite 30 years old. Hands down my favorite scene is Mr Gideon's pawn shop. Eric's entrance quoting The Raven. How he just toys with him .the blowing up the building with the shotgun. Brandon's performance is so good that even if he hadn't died , I think it would have been a cult classic. And the Long haired boss is Michael Wincott. One of my favorite character actors. You may have seen him in Along came a spider, Robin Hood prince of thieves or most recently Nope. Probably the first of the modern comic book adaptations. And probably the first to catch the mood and style of the source material. Of course they changed a lot. I understand that. For example, the comic book was even more sad. (hard to believe, I know) Also, there was never any struggle or danger to Eric in it. There wasn't a lot of dialogue and it was probably meant to be this way. They tried to make a sort iconic dark fable of sort. With over-the-top villains and a very simple story. When I saw it, I liked it well enough, although I felt it was a bit shallow. It's sort of an extended videoclip. It's beautiful to look at and Brandon Lee gave a great breakout performance. In my opinion he would have had a great career following the movie. The Crow made him finally come out of his father's shadow. Before that he was relegated to action b-movies. R.I.P. Brandon Lee.

This movie is a huge part of my movie-viewing life. I have been watching this since my brother bought the VHS for $90. I have been quoting this movie on a regular basis since middle school. It also should be noted that this is kind of the prototypical "goth" movie, and it is the reason that so many 90's teens just painted their faces white with black lines for Halloween. The thought of Brandon Lee passing away is almost a separate piece of information for me than the movie. While I cannot say what the overall public exposure would have been, my enjoyment is not associated with that memory, and it doesn't seem like it's cultural impact was either. But who knows, that is just the opinion of someone who wore fishnet shirts in highschool.

Ever since having seen The Crow upon its release, it has been one of my most favourite films. Not only because the performances are excellent, but because it’s visually stunning, has possibly one of the best soundtracks; & also because of what Proyas achieved. The Crow was filmed somewhat back to front; with Brandon Lee filming all the scenes of him in make up first. This meant that the scenes of him without the now iconic make up would be some of the last filmed on the production; & sadly the last Lee would’ve ever film. On March 31, 1993, Lee was filming a scene where his character, Eric, is shot after witnessing the beating and rape of his fiancée. Actor Michael Massee's character Funboy fires a .44 Smith & Wesson Model 639 revolver at Lee as he walks into the room. A previous scene using the same gun had called for inert dummy cartridges fitted with bullets, but no powder or primer, to be loaded in the revolver. For close-up scenes that use a revolver, where the bullets are clearly visible from the front, and do not require the gun to actually be fired, dummy cartridges provide a more realistic appearance than blank rounds, which have no bullet. Instead of purchasing commercial dummy cartridges, the film's prop crew, hampered by time constraints, created their own by pulling the bullets from live rounds, dumping the powder charge, then reinserting the bullets. In the fatal scene, which called for the revolver to be actually fired at Lee from a distance of 12-15 feet, the dummy cartridges were exchanged for blank rounds, which feature a live powder charge and primer, but no bullet, thus allowing the gun to be fired without the risk of an actual projectile. As the production company had sent the firearms specialist home early, responsibility for the guns was given to a prop assistant who was unaware of the rule for inspecting all firearms before and after any handling. Therefore, the barrel was not checked for obstructions when the time came to load it with the blank rounds. Since the bullet from the dummy round was already trapped in the barrel, this caused the .44 Magnum bullet to be fired out of the barrel with virtually the same force as if the gun had been loaded with a live round, and it struck Lee in the abdomen, mortally wounding him. O'Barr later remarked that losing Lee was like losing his fiancée all over again, and he regretted ever writing the comic in the first place. In an interview in 2005, 12 years after the incident, Massee revealed that he still had nightmares about it, stating, "I don't think you ever get over something like that”. Massee vowed to never watch the film; a promise he kept right up until when he passed away in 2016. I can’t even begin to imagine the guilt he must have carried with him. Also, The Cure, who composed the song ‘Burn’ specifically for the film, up until only a few years back refused to play it out of respect. After a great deal of soul-searching, Proyas and the rest of The Crow's cast and crew arrived at the conclusion that Lee would have insisted that they finish the film. With most of the actor's scenes completed, it was up to special effects house Dream Quest to fill in the blanks, which they accomplished in a number of ways. For the scene in which a newly-returned-from-the-grave Eric returns to his old apartment, for example, unused footage of Lee was used, with the actor's image digitally composited into a shot of the apartment set. For a few other key images, however, the effects technicians turned to techniques that were, in 1993, ridiculously cutting edge. Proyas brought in a relatively green stunt performer by the name of Chad Stahelski, who had been good friends with Lee and had a similar build. For a handful of scenes, including the one in which Eric sports his eerie makeup for the first time, approaching his window as lightning briefly illuminates the room, Stahleski stood in for Lee during shooting. Then, Dream Quest used previously captured footage of Lee to digitally graft the actor's face on Stahleski's body. The resulting shots certainly benefit from their brevity and from the darkness in which they were shot, but even today, the effect holds up remarkably well. Interestingly, Stahleski would go on to direct the John Wick films; I have no doubt, had Lee not died, he’d have been cast into the role. The loss of Lee during filming had a profound impact on Rochelle Davis, who played Sarah. Davis struggled with her mental health & substance abuse following the films release. For some time she was homeless; however she’s turned her life around & from her social media seems to be making progress….even to the point where she’s now appearing at conventions.
