Aren't you a bit harsh with Venice? A storm dispersed the fleet making it easier for the Ottomans to cross + the fleet was not as large as Venice had asked for, hence the reluctance to engage the Ottoman fleet. Venice often had a duplicitous role when it came to fighting the Ottomans (same can unfortunatey be said of Constantinople's emperors) but on this occasion they aren''t the most to be blamed. Cesarini is more guilty for convincing the King of Hungary that an oath to "infidels" did not engage him. Or Constantinople for that matter that did not warn the Crusaders that the Ottomans had crossed the strait.

2:43 Hunyadi was almost for sure a descendent of Cuman refugees. About the time of the Battle of Varna, all cumans were fully assimilated into Hungarian society/nobility. Nowadays Romanians are trying to claim him as a member of their nation but that's very doubtful.

@@RealCrusadesHistory Yeah it's a typical issue in Central-Eastern Europe. The "younger" nations that developed inside the borders of Poland and Hungary have a tendency of appropriating the history of their former hosts to their needs. Usually for propaganda and validation. Poland is at constant conflict regarding this matter with Belarus and Ukraine just like Hungary is with Romania. Authors of the sources you used probably tried to stay neutral in this conflict.

Actually, John was of Romanian (Vallachian) origin, as stated even by his son's court historian (his son being Matthias Corvinus, the King of Hungary). His father, Voicu (Voyk) moved to Transylvania from Vallachia and was granted land near Hunedoara, present day Romania, by Sigismund of Luxembourg.

@@Hardistul Well Hunyadi János has been never called John or Ion for that matter and spoke Hungarian in his whole life so we were not talking about his origin (and "his son" Corvin Mátyás actually was the son of Sigismund of Luxemburg (that's why Hunyadi János got Hunyadvár which has been given to Romanian robbers only in 1920).

A true tragedy. No thanks to the Venetians, who messed up 2 crusades: the Fourth and then this one. I hope he was forgiven for causing the defeat at Varna.

I’d argue the Great Turkish War was the last crusade. After the 17th century the idea of a united European Christian front against the Turks kind of collapsed due to the stagnation of the latter and colonial conflict taking president for the former.

John Hunyadi's origins are not mysterious at all. He was of Romanian (Vallachian) origin, as clearly stated by his son's (Matthias Corvinus, the King of Hungary) chronicler. Most historians consider that his father, Voicu Hunyadi was a Vallachian nobleman which was granted land in Hunedoara (present day Romania, a county and city that is named after the Hunyad family) by Sigismund of Luxembourg. Others say Voicu was a Knez (Vallachian military leader from Hungarian controlled Transylvanian provinces). Either way, there is no doubt that John was of Romanian stock and he is Romanian national hero as well. There are other instances of Knezes that fought valiantly for Hungary, such as Paul Chinezul (Pál Kinizsi) (originally from Satchinez, near Timișoara, Romania), who became a general in Matthias Corvinus' army and is said to have won every battle he took part in. His most known victory over the Ottomans was in the Battle of Câmpul Pâinii (Battle of Breadfield)

Hunyadi was captured and betrayed by the Serbs. They even imprisoned him and made him sign over many of his properties to them. Skanderbeg who was his close ally was not allowed by the Serbs to go to the aid of Hunyadi. Not sure why Serbs act like they really fought against Ottoman Turks, but in the end they made deals with them always betraying the coalition, same thing they did in the Battle of Kosovo which now they continue with their mythology that it was their battle when it was a coalition battle of Balkan principalities which prince Lazar of Serbia betrayed and aided the Ottomans. On the other hand Venetians were also worse. They were more concerned about their trades than the crusade. Skanderbeg was the last crusader who was going to lead the last battle of crusade against the Ottomans who he also kept for close to 25 years away from crossing over to Europe. I think Pope Pious II was poisoned by Venetians to stop the crusade and just accept the Ottoman rule on the East.

@@eldarion5919 Yeah, that was most certainly BS Corvinus was just trying to add prestige / legitimacy to himself and his reign by associating his father with the emperors of the House of Luxemburg, while that claim might had not been very believable even back then I do not think anyone would had risked openly question him in that regard while he was king so for decades probably no one bothered to look into the past of the Hunyadi family probably contributing to the relative obscurity of the topic.
