Κρυπτεία
We hear how threats to national security are neutralized and traced through electronic media. Impressive technological advances have made it possible.
The need for this practice was always felt in ancient civilizations such as Ancient Greece.
The Spartans employed the same kinds of methods to help keep the population submissive.
This was done through the ‘Crypteia’, a type of secret police, in Sparta.

Good secret police not only operate in the shadows but just as well in plain sight by simply blending into the background or into title placed upon them thats why the gestapo were so effective u knew who they were by the presence they gave off but you'd never truly know they intentions or plan of actions until they're well in motion id equate these guys to something similar to a modern day spook or frogman style of unit

For the Spartan Similar caste, serving in the Crypteia was effectively a rite of passage and the equivalent of a final exam, to show the trainers that the youth had what it took to be a warrior. Helots were often used as training dummies to hone the killer instincts of young men born into Sparta's warrior-elite.

Actually a fair and balanced analysis of an aspect of Spartan structure. I have seen far too many channels take ancient sources at face value without consideration of bias and/or exaggeration. Personally used Xenephon's and Plutarch's accounts the most when I had to do a term paper on Spartan Political structure across it's history.

@hectoraliegbe9429
@hectoraliegbe9429 2 жыл бұрын
Reaching the age of 20 is not considered to be a Spartan male's "graduation" from the Agoge. Instead the youth would enter into the final age category within the training program known as "Hebontes" (Age: 20-29). Though the Spartan male would be eligible for military service, they were not considered to be a "Spartiate" (Elite full-citizen of Sparta) and was still under the direct authority of the "Paidonomos" (Boy-herder). It was only at the age of 30 would the Spartan male graduate from the Agoge and become a "Spartiate", though he still must serve in the military until he reaches the age of 60.

This begs the question "what did Spartan women do?" Males were warriors and they had slaves who did the farming. So i guess all this helped Spartan women to earn a reputation of being "more involved into politics" and having more general freedom than the rest of the Greek world with all that free time they had

Spartan women exercised and had kids, and unlike other Greek women, they could own property and inherit things (unlike everywhere else where inheritance went to the eldest male child, in Sparta, it went to the wife), though they couldn't vote (yes, Sparta had a limited form of democracy kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ptZ3dsWZnc3Lhac.html)

And people think the Spartans were defending "freedom" at Thermopylae.... sure, their freedom. But their society was incredibly oppressive and evil, they for sure weren't fighting for democracy.
