The problem with CS:GO is the way Valve is structured. CS:GO needs dedicated, well structured teams. Valve has... none of that. Valve works off the principle that employees get to work on what they want, when they want. No one wants to sit for weeks weeding through shitty netcode and other shit just to find a minor bug that results in a shot rarely not registering. So, the result is we get gloves (something relatively interesting to make) instead of hardcore fixes (which is boring af for these employees). Those at Valve _really_ should consider creating a daughter company separate from Valve where Dota2 and CS:GO would go. This way they could hire dedicated teams focused on these games, without harming Valve's structure/culture. Employees from Valve could chose to work on them still, but there'd always be a reasonable amount of devs with a variety of skills (unlike now, where I suspect most of the people working on CS:GO aren't hardcore programmers or source engine developers but instead designers and other artists from Valve's past that don't have useful skills related to VR or Steam). Employees hired at the daughter company could work their way 'into' valve after doing their time. Hell Valve could put a lot of their problem childs there, like Steam Support. No one at Valve wants to deal with the bullshit that is customer support, so that's why steam support is shit. Make Steam Support the daughter company's business, and hire dedicated customer support staff and developers familiar with that field. Valve has the money to easily fund this, and, if done right, should make Valve an even more profitable company (better products = better customers = more profit in this situation). The way Valve is structured means that most projects will die long-term as Valve moves onto bigger and better things that pull devs away. This is fine for games like Portal and Half-life as they don't need long-term development. Games like CS:GO and Dota 2 _require_ long term development. TF2 was the same way, but Valve's structure killed it. Now it's place is taken by Overwatch, and that's all lost profit and influence in Valve's perspective. This could have been avoided had they gotten a dedicated dev team to work on the game instead of the occasional employee stirring the pot without proper direction after a few years. It's incredibly annoying to see good products ruined and immense profit being lost due to... no good reason at all. Valve needs to adapt, abandon, or sell these failing projects.
