The Cuban missile crisis was the moment during the Cold War when the two superpowers: the United States and the Soviet Union came close to nuclear war.
Secret communications and miscommunications which played out between the White House and the Kremlin made the crisis a unique event.

Dain II IronfootKing Under The Mountain I think if you're from the US your high school class has glossed over the Bay of Pigs and the actual status of nuclear weapons during the period. I remember US history in my junior year we watched "13 Days" and that was it. The mention of US missiles in Turkey and the feeling of total crisis in the Soviet Union isn't completely ignored but it's still a shallow tack on. Just how global this crisis was is the most down played part of my old perception of the Crisis. Geopolitical goodness if you're into that kind of stuff. Independent study is the only way to really grasp a lot of the things we're taught to be true.

One one ever talks about the true hero behind the Cuban Missile Crisis, Vasili Arkhipov, a political officer aboard a submerged submarine carrying nuclear armaments to Cuba that lost communications after being struck by a depth charge; the sub commander believed that the war had begun, and being unable to confirm, made the decision to ready his misses for launch and was only prevented from starting the desolation of the known world by this one man: Vasili Arkhipov.

Problems with this video: 1. Didn't mention that Kruschev placed the missles in response to U.S. having missles in Turkey, as well as the Cuba's desire to have a deterant against the U.S. invading Cuba, as they had attempted at The Bay of Pigs. 2. Didn't mention that the US did not follow through with removing the missles in Turkey. 3. Didn't mention that US destroyers depth charged Soviet sub B-59 to force them to surface and that, if it were not for the veto of one senior officer, the sub was going to launch nuclear tipped torpedoes at the Blockade, thinking that the depth charges were a signal that war broken out. Overall, this video white washes US culpability in creating the crisis and the fact that the US almost destroyed the world.

You missed out a part where a Soviet Submarine was being attacked by US ships dropping Depth Charges as warning shots in order to get it to surface somewhere in Cuba I lost some memory of this so im stating the best I know. While the Sub was being attacked by the warning shots the commander of the sub planned to use Nuclear Torpedoes to retaliate but however it required approval from 2 officers, 1 officer approved it but the other denied it. I dont remember who denied approval of the Nuclear Torpedo launch but he saved the world from Nuclear War and the Sub surfaced.

hey, great videos guys, just one small thing: the Russian deployment of their nuclear capabilities had come only after the US deployed theirs in Turkey. In fact in the agreement that was signed states that the US will withdraw their nuclear weapons from Turkey, who objected, stating that they will be vulnerable to the ambitions of the Soviets. it was done nevertheless, so i think its a very important detail when describing the cuban missile crisis.

My father was in Army basic training during the Cuban Missile Crisis. They had their weapons training and were told if things kick off with Russia they could be skip the rest of their training to be put on the front lines. They figured all they really needed was knowing how to use their weapons and a little fire and maneuver training.

The U-2 could not determine the difference between a vacant site, (revetment) a construction site, or an operational site. The "site" was created by grading the site in a particular pattern to enable the rapid movement or the various missile types in or out in under a day. The Russians enjoyed playing maskirovka (deception) with the Americans because once the missile equipment was assembled, it was transportable. The large Ballistic Missiles were transported by TEL (Transporter, Erector, Launchers. (always the stars of the May Day parades.

He forgot to mention, that another reason why the US was angry at cuba was because they started trading sugar for russian oil. When the US found out they told them to stop, and they didn't and in return the US stopped trade with them, pushing Cuba to have Russia as its main buyer. In which stronger ties came about and eventually lead to the missiles being set up in cuba.

No mention that the placement of the missiles in Cuba was a REACTION to the US placing missiles in Turkey? Middle range weapons have a shorter warning period (shorter travel time), thus shifting the balance in the nuclear stalemate significantly. Moscow was in range of the Turkish missiles, so of course they reacted.

The situation is a bit different. The Soviets were trying to spread their influence across Eurasia. The Jupiter Missiles were a deterrent to Soviet aggression towards sovereign states protected by NATO (Like Turkey) this was so effective that when the DPRK tried to restart the Korean war but couldn't get any backing from China or the USSR because they were too scared to face American troops and a possible nuclear attack.

Well, a big part was omiten. Yes, the USSR put missiles in Cuba, but in response of the Jupiter missiles placed by the USA in Turkey, that was literally sharing borders with the USSR. The Soviet president (can someone tell me how it is spelled?) agreed to retire the missiles in Cuba, if Kennedy retired the ones in Turkey, but, just like the video said, they refused and when that was the only solution, they met in secret and so on

It took 2:41 to even mention USA had missiles in Turkey. Never mentioned that USSR sending missiles to Cuba was a REACTION to USA having missiles in Turkey. Never mentioned that those missiles were nuclear. Instead, he calls them by their name [PGM-19] "Jupiter" but calls Soviet missiles "nuclear missiles" instead of their name "R-12 Dvina". This is what biased history looks like :)

My nans relative Ron Blur was a Navigator aboard the Vulcan bomber of the RAF during the Cold War he was once sent out and when aboard he found a letter which he was told to open once they reached a certain altitude and it read, 'don't bother coming back because there will be nothing to come back to'. The British believed a nuke was going to be dropped on them which is why he recieved this letter and it still fascinates me to this day.

This was difficult for Kennedy as he had to prove to everyone that he wasn't 'weak' as his reputation proved - so he could either fix an agreement with the USSR to remove their missiles out of Cuba or prove that he can make rash decisions. Instead of starting a nuclear war, which would most definitely wipe out Cuba - and wouldn't look good for the USA crushing a small country. - He made a blockade, to restrict any more missiles coming into Cuba. Kennedy named this a quarantine so that it would sound better to opposition. Some ships sailed out, transporting missiles and spotted the US Navy blockade and stopped in their tracks, waiting, sweating.. Until someone ordered them around. This moment was when the USSR gave in. Khrushchev was trying to look like 'The peacemaker' but ended up looking like he lost against the US. But this boosted Kennedy's reputation and as a result, his difficult choice was the right choice.
