I think that so many things factored into it. Life expectancy was shorter and so many illnesses had no cure or treatment, so it was easy to blame the deaths on a number of things. Also in those days one in every five children died before their fifth birthday, so the deaths of the children were not enough to raise any suspicion. So sad.
@speakerz74
@speakerz74 Жыл бұрын
@@lilivonshtup3808 it doesn't really matter how prevalent death is, humans are perceptive enough to deduce foul play in a loved ones death if it's there, I think it was more a matter of not being able to do anything about it, the authorities didn't have the resources to blindly chase theories so concrete and substantial allegations were prioritized, so even if you knew that someone poisoned someone and reported it they may dismiss it for the factors you listed, until there were more deaths or allegations surrounding the person in question

Her mother sending her away to live with an uncle on a farm after she remarried must have made Lydia feel worthless and a burden. That mindset regarding people and especially children, seems to have then made it easy for her to kill anyone she considered worthless and a burden. She was damaged. Cold & emotionless. Typical of many serial killers. A tragedy for anyone who came into her life.

I wondered how she could treat her children and husbands so horrifically and be so callous about it, but she must've formed an attachment disorder as a child caused by the death of her mother and then being sent away to various relatives. Sad the effect poor choices can have even on future generations. Children need love and nurturing.

Lydia should have gotten the death penalty anyway regardless of what she claimed, that the last husband's death was accidental. I think the criticisms from the newspaper editors were justified, that the jurors found her guilty of second-degree murder and not first out of consideration for her gender. And then she goes on and "writes" a book bragging about her deeds. The lucky ones were the suitors who pursued her for matrimonial reasons and were not up for her consideration.

Probably the stress of having seven children that it would have been almost impossible to feed and clothe and facing a future of absolute misery. Good Monday everyone! One thing I admire most about BC..is the respectful way he addresses and narrates the stories! I feel like Lydia resorted to doing away with her first victims (her disgraced husband and 3 youngest) out of misplaced sense of desperation.Getting "rid" of them,as though they were "liabilities" to her way of thinking, seemed to make some sort of twisted sense to her.It was an easy fix,one she gained more confidence in getting away with it with each progressive person she killed.After a while it became too easy for her and became more of a remedy and a method of selfish motives for her own benefit.She was indeed a "Poison Fiend" and murdering anyone is despicable,but I can't fathom a mother poisoning infants and standing by and watching them go through horrible and painful deaths ,no matter how desperate the circumstances.Also I think it quite possible that her 3 older children must have had some suspicions of their mother but we're in fear of her killing them if they spoke up.Another remarkable tragic tale of a monstrous woman with no conscience to speak of! Thanks BC ! See you next week !❤️

I don't know what I'd do if I were her, losing my husband and all 7 of my children. Well, I guess she was one of the original black widows. So many deaths followed her, I actually lost count as to how many she killed, seriously. A modern Borgia, referring to Lucrecia Borgia, pope Alexanders daughter, supposedly she loved to use poison.

So this demon of a woman almost got away with about 11 murders because she was such an "Upstanding" member of society?? And she didn't get the death penalty because??

After listening to quite a few of these stories, Women really DO use posion often for murder. Damn how many women got away with murder because they didn't go extreme and kill everyone they could?

Wow she certainly didn't hold back from slaughtering her entire clan of children did she. She was absolutely brutal. No doubt she was the cause of all those mass killings. Another top video from u Brief Case as always. Love these old historical crimes that happened so many vast years ago that barely anyone knew about. You're definitely the person to come to when covering cases like these. Top work & as usual very well narrated

Good grief! Come on the whole family wiped out and only she remained! That was the first clue, you could literally wipe out a small village but if they thought you were cute,( I don't see it). And I guess beauty is in the I of the beholder. Those poor children being murdered by the one they trusted the most. She was just pure walking evil! Great story BC! Great job as well keep doing what you do.

BC wow i just (still) ( after seeing every BC episode) love your stories so much, they are sad, but I often think of them as ''Mythology-like Moralistic Tales of how to LIVE RIGHT , OR TO LIVE WRONG. THERE is so often NOT any in between , the line between right and wrong is so CRYSTAL CLEAR in most stories, in particular POISONING YOUR WHOLE FAMILY , AN all-too-common phenomenon in the 1800's. Thank you for all the detailed work you put in. Bravo on this one !!

Fun Fact ~ Just for clarification for the North American viewers when the narrator says Lydias eldest daughter also named Lydia worked as a clark... It is "Clerk", for some reason the British use an A sound instead of our E in clerk.
