Here's a small video about "HL1DevTest". A series of maps found in the leak that go through in the Half-Life story in a very distorted manner.

I do remember a Tyler McVicker video on this exact thing from the more recent Valve leak. I think the map had floating text describing what should happen when certain triggers are passed or what should happen with certain interactions. Based on the way the text is written (and the fact it exists at all) would indicate that it is meant to test Half-Life features in HL:S. Fun fact: you can skip to the end from the reactor room by just gauss jumping.

We do this sort of thing in game dev a lot. Usually before a game comes out, of course - but effectively, it seems to be a vertical slice demo of everything you can find in the main game, so you can play through just this rather than the entire game to test whether various game functions are working as they'd expect and how they all interact in-context when working on gameplay code. I've built similar levels myself, and they were all designed to help me, or other developers (or management, sometimes!) to see a sample of everything in the game quicker than playing through the standard levels.

I covered this last January when it leaked. Basically, these maps were for internal dev tests for testing various things such as flow, layout and gameplay. Its an Abridged HL1 which in itself is just a Mini-Campaign. It wasn't for public use as Valve didn't do anything with the maps

Could have been a prologue for people who hadn’t played HL1. Kind of like the Tanker section in Metal Gear Solid 2. But it’s kind of odd since HL1 didn’t really have much of a story and it was mostly environmental story telling.

I don’t see that working. If this was meant for that, why does it have the same exact assets, weapons, and enemies as HL1? If this was meant for that, there would’ve been a lore reason for how it looks.

Valve uses devtest maps for general testing and to make sure no features break during development. HL2, the episodes, Portal, and Portal 2 all had one too. They tend to squeeze every feature of the game into a short easily replayable map so if something's broken you're likely to find it.

The map is for mod creators. HLS was only for mod testing to see if their hl1 mods would work well with source. That map is basically there to test your mods without creating a special map just to test it out. Think of it like the tumtara l4d2 map

ooga booga. Also, these maps are most likely just test maps for porting GSource to Source. Also, the crashes at start are 99% chance to be water. I beat the whole HL:S Beta, don't ask why... And blast pit's hole would crash my game no matter what, we've got hostiles part where you have 2 scientists and a sentry would crash the game if I touched the water. Also I had 49 crashes in total throughout the entire playthrough. :)

Good timing with this video, Rad! I'm pretty sure this was actually covered in the recent official Half Life 25th Anniversary documentary --I tried for the life of me to find the part where they mentioned it, and frankly the details are foggy so take what I say with a grain of salt.. I could have sworn this exact subject was brought up, either that or I'm confusing things!

What if somebody created this as a game showcase. For parents or grandparents who don't have time or are unable to play video games. Sure the experience is incomplete but it can give you the idea about Half life and how it might have played. I can imagine showing this to my brother who doesn't have time to play video games and have him play it/ complete it in just few minutes. Kinda like zoomer version of a video game.

first thing that came to mind is how some game demos do this where they splice a bunch of different levels together into one, picking highlights or set pieces from eachone, to give a broad idea of the whole game. I guess that's what they're doing here. I remember FEAR 2 did this approach with its demo.

The dev tests may have been used to test out texture mapping/updated physics in every part of the game without having to play it all the way through, while still getting to demo why everything looks like. Xen is absent because they could just spawn in those levels easily, maybe?

ooga booga Also yes this was ported to the modern version of Source by Tyler Mcvicker. The still recent Valve mega leak also included a lot of HL:S related stuff including the map sources for these devtest maps. So Tyler used these to fix up the maps and released them last January. Also mod video suggestion: 2 weeks ago a mod called "The Thing Remaster" came out. Its basically a remake/remaster of "The Thing" mod for made for the HL2 Beta. I played and its pretty cool. You should check it out.

it could have been a set of the larger scale set pieces throughout the game to test how things port between goldsrc and source, and if anything breaks, its likely the maps contain every major piece of logic that would need to be tested (scripted sequences, ai goals, nodes, behaviors) this can help ensure those sequences still play out as they're supposed to, without replaying segments a bajillion times

40 seconds in and ive got to pause it to make an educated guess: The original Goldsrc engine that Half-Life ran on was able to have such short loading times partly because the level load & transition system was based on the same system used for quick save & quick load. (Quick save & load were made before the menu hard saves, just like level loading screens the hard save code is also based on the quick save code.) I.e., the level load & transition system is basically just quick saving and loading extra quick, which is also what allows certain skips and glitches such as the elevator skip for office complex. Although Source was built upon Goldsrc, HL2 does not have the same level transition system as HL1. My personal theory is that the HL1DevTest is testing the fluidity of the level transitions; the 'linearity' of the game. Making sure the code works, that you spawn where/when/with what you should, that the new system doesn't load into the wrong level or crash completely, that it doesn't fuck up the saves or corrupt data, etc. etc.

My guess is the map was made for playtesting. A quick 20 minute run that covers various environments, weapons and enemies would be perfect for gathering player feedback. Seems odd that they would do this for an engine port of an already released game, but maybe they were just trying to nail the 'game feel' before release and this was a good way to test and make tweaks where needed.

I'd say it was likely for fine-tuning ported assets to get them to that "close enough" threshhold. What better place is there to test the faithfulness of game-feel than a vertical slice of noteworthy setpieces from the original game? Still, probably a bit overdesigned for test maps. Kinda reminds me of Black Mesa's short PAX demo loop map, even though they both served completely different purposes.
