There aren't many families in ancient greek Mythology that were quite as unlucky as the house of Atreus and the multiple curses that plagued the household over multiple generations. Atreus was the mythical Greek king of Mycenae. He is perhaps best known for being the father of Agamemnon and Menelaus, two heroes of the Trojan War, as well as for the terrible curse placed upon his family. This was a hereditary curse, plaguing the family for five generations with a vicious cycle of murder and revenge.
The curse of the House of Atreus began when its founder, Tantalus, offended the gods by serving them a feast made of the dismembered remains of his own son, Pelops, in an attempt to test their omniscience. It continued with the rivalry between Atreus and his brother Thyestes that blossomed into a bloody feud, and it afflicted the next generation as well, with the murder of Agamemnon by his own wife. The curse did not end until Atreus' grandson Orestes avenged Agamemnon's murder and was absolved from all guilt by the gods after being tormented by the furies.
The story of the curse of the house of Atreus made excellent dramatic material for ancient Greek and Roman literature, as seen in the trilogy known as the Oresteia written by Greek tragedy playwright Aeschylus and the tragedy Thyestes written by Seneca. The members of the House of Atreus are referenced in many different sources of Greek mythology, with Atreus' descendants being collectively known as Atreidai, the plural form of the patronymic name Atreides.

I've just been struck with a nostalgia by Virgin Steele's "House of Atreus" album, but here it is, the retelling of the original story! Thanks for familiarizing me with this piece of mythological history.

There was one alternative to a critical event in this story - the sacrifice of Iphigenia. There were myths of "Iphigenia in Aulis" and "Iphigenia in Egypt" after her supposed sacrifice. And if you believe PDQ Bach, there is also the less well-known "Iphigenia in Brooklyn." :-))

Thank you! Most people chose Electra I saw in your poll so I thought I was wrong, but she was Oedipus' sister wasn't she? Or his daughter? But the opposite complex in Freudian terms, the daughter's abnormal love of the father, right? Anyway, I think the popularity to today, is not only the horror & civilizing nature of humanity is one reason, but what the Athenian tragedians did with it that led many like Freud, Nietzsche & others to form theories about human nature. And about honoring the gods, and punishments. But why such a cursed past from prehistoric times in this one family where many rituals & rules & offerings, etc., were set down at this one "before"-time, for all time, seems mysterious if not confusing, lol. But I guess in the end, good stories survive.

She was actually Orestes' sister. There's a lot of valuable lessons that can be learnt from Greek mythology and it definitely makes for a good story. Thanks for watching! 🙂

I think there are many aspects of this myth that can be found throughout Game of Thrones. George R.R. Martin does get his inspiration from history/mythology.
