I know Scott isn't exactly a PC gamer but I would love to see him do a full video on the Steam Deck. As someone with a lot of opinions on controllers and D-pads I have to say the Steam deck nailed every aspect of a controller.

The Playstation dpad is one piece, not 4 separate buttons. If you press one direction, you see the whole thing rock instead of just one direction pressing down. It just has a groove in the middle to allow it to fit under the shell of the controller.

I own the Zelda variant of this D-Pad Joy-Con. Great for playing Tetris, and it was an absolute lifesaver when my left Joy-Con started drifting and I had to send it over to Nintendo.

I don't know why everyone prefers the D-pad, I've never liked the idea of being able to misinput because you rock your thumb a slight bit too much. Separate buttons prevents that

It really bugs me that people mistake the Dualshock d-pad as four separate buttons. It is a single plastic piece that works as a normal d-pad, it's just that it is molded in a way that there is a gap in the outside

I did a joy-con shell swap for both of my joy-cons and had the “D-pad” swapped with a proper D-pad and I’m very happy with the results. Went for a clear black for both while also doing a back plate swap for the switch itself, also clear black. The face buttons have the colors from the Super Famicom. Well worth the time and for not so much money spent.

I'm a weirdo who actually prefers the D-buttons over the D-pad and analog stick(s) in general for consoles like the Switch The GBA and (3)DS I'm very comfortable with using these days, there's a solid feel to em that clicks with me - I know we're well into "just emulate those games" territory for even the 3DS but sometimes you just can't beat the real hardware But the D-pad on the 8bitdo I have, man It's not bad but it's got a different feel from the old handhelds and as a result it doesn't click quite as well

I got a d-pad shell back in like 2018, which I put onto my launch-left-joycon. It still works awesomely, and by gosh do I love it, to the point that Ive gotten new joycons since then, but it's still my go-to

For me personally, once I got used to the joycon "d-pad" it's actually not that bad to use and in a lot of games I prefer it. The only time this D-pad sucked to use was trying to play Metroid Fusion. That games already difficult, but that game showed me why most people don't like to use the joycon's D-Pad.

I know this will be buried but I’m a little bit of a Hori connoisseur. I absolutely adore this dpad. As far as I have researched, they have been putting this style on their controllers since the PS2 era with their shindou controller for PS2. They have a similar, albeit larger dpad on the Pokken and Fighting Commander controllers. I have several variations of this joycon for spare parts and the Blue one from Japan rarely leaves my switch. I ordered a Mario red one for the right side to have a similar non-pastel color to match. If I’m playing on the TV I’m using the pro controller for modern games or 8bitdo or Pokken controller for side scrollers.

Scott forgetting that the gamecube and wii had pretty bad d-pads. Im ngl, i like the directional buttons. I played all if hollowknight with joycons while on vacation when i was younger and really enjoyed using them. They're very precise so it felt fantastic for puzzles and combat in the 2D world. Its also my preferred way to play tetris for the same reasons, no misinputting

Please educate me because I don’t get it. How is separate buttons worse than a D-pad? Don’t they function mostly the same? The only difference I can think of is that the D-pad can’t press left & right or up & down at the same time.

Despite my Switch OLED screen, this why I also got Switch Lite for this, the D-pad on that thing feels so good! I'm more on to Handheld gaming so this makes more sense for me.

I like the default arrow buttons. Yeah, they can kinda scuff up your skin a little but they feel kinda cozy on certain games. (Capcom Fighting Collection)

I like the Joy-cons separate buttons d-pad. The inputs are much clearer and precise. Playing Celeste was way easier with the joycons d-pad. I hope they keep it, I like it very much.

it's nothing like the playstation d-pad, which is an actual d-pad on a pivot just the middle of the + goes under the plastic between the segments, where the left joy-con's d-pad really is just four separate buttons

honestly the best d-pad ive used, not just for the xbox controllers but controllers in general is the series x controller, it just has the responsiveness of the 3ds dpad with basically the design of the sega sturn d-pad and its like bliss

I was skeptical at first, but I ended up loving the button d-pad. The "regular" d-pad on the Pro Controller feels so mushy and imprecise in comparison. I wish Nintendo was better at providing alternative official controllers to make everyone happy.

"This is a highly situational controller" I put mine on when I bought the Switch in 2019 and I don't think I've ever removed it! I mainly played retro/retro style games and metroidvanias when in portable mode though. I love my Steamdeck OLED, but it would be nice to have swappable controllers like the Switch. As a Sega Saturn fan I am legally required to complain about any d-pad which is not the Japanese (or model 2 Western) Sega Saturn d-pad, but I found the Hori d-pad and the Steamdeck d-pad acceptable.

NGL i love the button d-pad. With dpads getting consistently worse and worse and me playing more difficult and precise games, i want to get my inputs correct and love not worrying about sliding my finger and suddenly i get back quarter circle down and whiff and suddenly I'm in a 20 hit combo.

Shocked you didn't mention the Switch Lite, since it does have a traditional Nintendo D-Pad I figured it would've at least been mentioned. Honestly the D-Pad is really the only reason I'd ever buy a Lite model.

As someone who came from using a keyboard my entire life, I VASTLY prefer the switch dpad over every other Dpad I've tried, it just feels so much more tactile and less mushy. Like I refuse to play 2d games on my steam deck because of the dpad, But LOVE playing them on the switch. Am I crazy?

This is how I feel about the Hori controllers. Got the Gengar split pad compact on sale and man it looks cool! But with no rumble or wireless support it mostly looks cool on my dresser.

I have the Pikachu and the Zelda Hori D-Pad joycons... The Zelda one looks sick with the OLED Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Switch.

@6:48 I have the Zelda one of these. It never locked into place quite right on either the original Switch or my OLED Switch. But the D-Pad felt alright.

I'm sorry everyone, I vastly prefer the Joy-Con's fake D-pad to any other controller's D-pad. The PlayStation Vita's D-pad is a close second place. It's simple, with the segmented buttons acting as a D-pad, you'll never have another accidental diagonal again. Tetris is the perfect example. It was unplayable on a Pro Controller. But even beyond Tetris, it just removes all potential ambiguity. For example, trying to crouch in a 2D platformer. There's always going to be some ambiguity when holding diagonal Down Right on a plus style D-pad. You can easily accidentally slip into one or the other. But with the segmented D-pad, there's zero ambiguity. And yeah, the Pro Controller's D-pad was particularly bad, but I still think the tactile feel of separate buttons is better than the + design on all controllers in general. I wish I could get a PlayStation style controller with the Joy-Con segmented D-pad.

I actually owned it when I first got my Switch. Sadly a former friend of mine never gave me back that D-Pad controller. It was lovely.

The Switch Pro controler D pad o is perfect. I have 2 and thousands hours and never once have I pressed up or down by accident. If u are hitting up or down by accident, it is a you problem, because I never have and one of my top 3 contorllers D pads of all time

I was hoping you also talked about the nyxi controllers, those are actually good joycons with good quality material and they do have rumble, wireless and a d-pad I got for myself yhe hyperion pro but they also have the wizard line which is made to resemble a gamecube controller

The Pokken controller is still my absolute favorite for emulation on PC. So damn good for SNES, GBA and everything that doesnt require analog sticks.

It does function apperently. But I would much rather use the Hori Splitpad pro. It's also just for handheld gaming with no rumble or motion controls. However this controller feels so much better if you don't have the hands of a 13 year old. The D-Pad is the same form but about twice as big. One of the best D-Pads I ever used.

i use the split pad pro. same thing with a matching right joycon and a ergonomic grip.

3ds dpad is so good, there’s no way to misinput, it feels like when you click something it only reads what you want

I have played SO many games using that not-a-d-pad. And honestly, it works fine. The only big drawback is that it kinda starts to hurt my thumb after long play times.

it works on playstation because it's still a rocker just with the middle hidden but the switch has separate buttons which just don't give you the same kind of feeling

Hey, I have this one! The lack of wireless does make it very situational. If you want to play a retro 2D game in handheld mode, Bob's your uncle. Normally I prefer to use my 8BitDo Pro 2 with the Switch docked.

I loved these when they came out but I believe Hori uses the same factory mold as Nintendo for the analog sticks. I've bought 3 of them and they've all succumbed to drift

I swear by the Hori Split Pad Compact, I've used it almost exclusively since I bought it, aside from motion controlled stuff where I break out the Joy Con. The only issue is that no case will fit the Switch with the Split Pad on it (unless you buy a specific third party custom one).

Really hope Scott does a video on all of the GameCube Joycons on the market!

i have joy cons with a d-pad - not these ones, though, made by another company that i don't remember. came with a left and right joy con, left has a d-pad, and overall, it feels pretty good! the only problem is that, ever since my right joy con rail needed repairs, the right joy con doesn't show up as purple on the ui, but instead as red. i feel that's just a switch issue though

I bought one for about $16 a couple months ago but I was very disappointed by how cheap it feels and the rubber minus button. I would have rather paid more for better quality but it works in a pinch.

I have the Pokemon Dpad Joycon. My Left Joycon was defective after about 3 months of use (Not drift actually, it was connectivity issues), and Nintendo did "repair"/replace it but I had to send it in, leaving me with no way to play the only game I had for the switch at the time, BotW. That Dpad Joycon was on sale at Target for $10. Obviously I bought it and was able to play my switch until the joycon arrived, so while its not great and lacks a few features, it fit my needs extremely well.

I think I prefer the D-buttons to D-pads in certain instances. It's far more precise than the Pro Controller or even the Switch Lite's horrible D-Pad that can't even do diagonals. I've played through Crash N'Sane Trilogy and Spyro Reignited Trilogy numerous times just using the D-buttons and it's perfectly fine. It's how I played Super Metroid for the first time and got into that series. I might just be a freak.

I actually preferred the shoulder buttons on this controller. I got one for really cheap and prefer it to the normal joycon.

Apart from Tetris 99, another game that plays really well with rhe OG controllers is F-Zero 99. Specially for those flying sections, more tricky on regular D-pads

I got a hori split pad pro because I despise how the joycons feel. Those felt great for the few times I got to use them. After 32 days (conveniently 2 days outside the warranty!) one of them completely stopped working, and I had only used it like 8 times, never swapped them on/off, never even took it outside That was like $60, down the drain. Very disappointing considering how I have a 20 year old n64 hori pad mini that still works

Just something to note, but games still read gyro, rumble, etc. from the right Joy-Con while you have this attached. So at most, the rumble on your Switch is going to be more soft, but you can still pretty much use it to play anything as long as you're in handheld mode. Strangely enough, never had the stick on this thing drift despite the fact that I used it pretty often for a few years, while actual Joy-Cons would. But I guess that's just luck of the draw with stick build quality.
