Very nice craftsmanship. To make it more secure you could make a few half-notches, so intruders (lockpickers/safecrackers) can't as easily feel out the combination by pulling on the cryptex and feeling for the click on the wheel that binds the most. Sort of like locks have mushroom or other types of security pins.

Outstanding workmanship! While watching this I was considering what it would take to make the parts. It looks like it required making jigs for drilling the brass rings. I was wondering how the inside of the steel tube would be turned. And one of the big challenges is stamping the lettering on the rings and making them come out consistently nice.

Rick Alexander thanks, that's amazing how did you come up with it. Have always loved conspiracy theory, old biblical mysteries, stuff like that. When I saw that in the movie I was like " I need that in my life"...I've also wanted to make the pendant from the illusionist. Puzzle type pendant.

When I saw it in the movie I knew I had to make one. I have seen the ones you can buy, or that came with the DVD, they look good, but when you handle them they feel cheep. My design is based off of those. I'll have to take a look at the puzzle pendant to see if it's doable.

Onece again thank you for the blueprints, i'd ask you a question: is it possible to drill accurately the holes for the password setting without a milling divider? How did you managed it?

I turn the lathe into a dividing head. I drilled 26 equally spaced holes in a 12 inch diameter plate, and mounted it on the back of the lathe spindle so I can pin each hole. I then use a Dremel tool on the lathe compound to spot and drill the location of each hole on a drill fixture. Then I use the drill fixture to drill all the letter wheels. The dividing plate is also used to scribe the lines on the letter rings. 26 equally spaced holes on a 12 inch diameter or larger plate are easier to layout than on a 2 inch plate. If you have a rotary table you can use it to drill the 26 holes in the plate and the drill fixture.

I have a rotary table and made a jig to drill the holes. I made a plate for the lathe spindle, that I could index 26 times, Its easier to locate the 26 holes on a round plate that is 12 inch diameter. You can then use the lathe as a dividing head. A dremmel or a drill attached to the cross slide and you can accurately drill the holes in a smaller diameter. I also used it to scribe the lines between the letters. Sorry I missed this post.

Is it possible to put a spring loaded catch and a button release in this ? i want to be able to dial in the code then press a button to release it,just like the film.

Good luck, I'm sure it can be done, there are many improvements that can be made, the only limit is the imagination, one improvement would be half notches in the index wheels, that would make it extremely difficult to feel the combination.

With 8 or more half notches on each index ring it is very hard to break into, without the half notches it is easy to feel for the notch and break into it.
