#Gravedigger #DaveMatthew #WillieNelson
In this episode of #TheDailyDoug, I'm breaking down a classic song by Dave Matthews called Gravedigger. For the Halloween season, I'm picking this one to highlight because of its unique point of view on human mortality. We're doing two versions: Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds (acoustic) and Willie Nelson's 2008 cover of the song. I hope you enjoy!

Back in the early 2000s, I'd tired of the metal scene and found myself listening, almost exclusively, to Dave Matthews Band and his solo stuff. Have to admit, the musicianship in that group is amazing, especially since they consider their selves to be a "jam band". Another great one that you could do is "Oh So Well". "Granny" is another great one.

When you know that Willy brought his kid to the grave you can see he is moved to tears when he performs live and sings " no one should bring his own children to the grave " . Gives me shivers .

Good assessment. One thing to note... The "Rink Around the Rosie" bridge has a bit more meaning that you initially describe - Right that it implies the concern for death, but the meaning of that children's song goes very deep. It was sung by children during the Bubonic / black plague. The "ring" they speak of was on the skin of all the dying. 65% of the earth population died - every person on earth saw a close family member die from this pandemic.

Another point of interest is that 'Ring Around the Roses' is a song from the Black Death. The first line refers to a rash that was the one of the symptoms of the infection, the posies is a bunch of fragrant herbs believed to protect against the disease, 'We all fall down'....needs no explanation

Haven't heard a note of Dave Matthews before now (though I was aware that he was well regarded in the US) but most impressed by this intelligent song (see also my comment to your Mastodon reaction) I will keep my ears open for more of his stuff.

Used to see them at Millers, The Mine Shaft, Max... late 80's seems like a million years ago. Head down to the Blue Boom Diner... life moves on as we avoid the gravedigger.

Doug knowing the chord progressions before hearing them would seem to give away the game. KZfaq reactions are generally theatrical and rehearsed.

As interesting as this is musically the lyrics are what make it special. Why did little Mikey die so young? “Rode his bicycle like a demon til the day he died” That story hurts.

(Samhain) from Wikipedia: Samhain (/ˈsɑːwɪn, ˈsaʊɪn/, Irish: [ˈsˠəunʲ], Scottish Gaelic: [ˈs̪ãũ.ɪɲ]; Manx: Sauin [ˈsoːɪnʲ]) is a Gaelic festival marking the end of the harvest season and beginning of winter or "darker-half" of the year. It is held on 1 November but with celebrations beginning on the evening of 31 October,[1] since the Celtic day began and ended at sunset.[2] This is about halfway between the autumn equinox and winter solstice. It is one of the four Gaelic seasonal festivals along with Imbolc, Beltaine and Lughnasa. Historically it was widely observed throughout Ireland, Scotland, and the Isle of Man (where it is spelled Sauin). A similar festival was held by the Brittonic Celtic people, called Calan Gaeaf in Wales, Kalan Gwav in Cornwall and Kalan Goañv in Brittany. Samhain is believed to have Celtic pagan origins and some Neolithic passage tombs in Ireland are aligned with the sunrise at the time of Samhain. It is first mentioned in the earliest Irish literature, from the 9th century, and is associated with many important events in Irish mythology. The early literature says Samhain was marked by great gatherings and feasts and was when the ancient burial mounds were open, which were seen as portals to the Otherworld. Some of the literature also associates Samhain with bonfires and sacrifices. The festival was not recorded in detail until the early modern era. It was when cattle were brought down from the summer pastures and when livestock were slaughtered. As at Beltaine, special bonfires were lit. These were deemed to have protective and cleansing powers and there were rituals involving them.[3] Like Beltaine, Samhain was a liminal or threshold festival, when the boundary between this world and the Otherworld thinned, meaning the Aos Sí (the 'spirits' or 'fairies') could more easily come into our world. Most scholars see the Aos Sí as remnants of pagan gods. At Samhain, they were appeased with offerings of food and drink, to ensure the people and their livestock survived the winter. The souls of dead kin were also thought to revisit their homes seeking hospitality, and a place was set at the table for them during a Samhain meal. Mumming and guising were part of the festival from at least the early modern era, whereby people went door-to-door in costume reciting verses in exchange for food. The costumes may have been a way of imitating, and disguising oneself from, the Aos Sí. Divination was also a big part of the festival and often involved nuts and apples. In the late 19th century John Rhys and James Frazer suggested it was the "Celtic New Year" but that is disputed.[4] In the 9th century the Western Church endorsed 1 November as the date of All Saints' Day, possibly due to the influence of Alcuin, and 2 November later became All Souls' Day. It is believed that over time Samhain and All Saints'/All Souls' influenced each other and eventually syncretised into the modern Halloween.[5] Folklorists have used the name 'Samhain' to refer to Gaelic 'Halloween' customs up until the 19th century.[6]
