In this special edition of #thedailydoug, I'm bringing in my brother, DJ Dan, for a conversation and CO-REACTION to Deliverance from Opeth. We're taking a look at the live recording from Opeth's 2017 concert at Red Rocks Ampitheatre in Colorado. Dan was at the concert, and it was great to chat about the band and his experience at their concert. And, we're doing this combined and expanded edition to celebrate my birthday! So, I hope you enjoy...and thanks for watching.

To the Question at 17:58. I think it's about the difference between intention and action. The POV character believes he is saving the person he is killing, so when describing his thoughts it's calm and soothing, but when describing his actions its harsh and aggressive.

My favorite thing about Opeth is the way they structure their chord voicing to emphasize the dissonant intervals in their harmonies. I almost never play Am anymore without a 9th on it after learning some of their music.

6:20 I met them by a coincidence at a bar in Oslo (called Elm Streets, which sadly is no longer around), when I was together with my bandmates at the time, and they were all over Mikael, about how much I looked like him (according to them). Kind of embarrassing but also cool at the same time. Happy birthday by the way!

Dan, thank you for introducing Doug to Opeth! As soon as I found this channel I knew you'd love Opeth, and had been waiting and hoping for you to get around to them. I was so happy when you finally reacted to them the first time. They've got so many incredible songs in their catalogue that it takes quite a while to get to them all.

Actually Mikael is a very humble person about his voice. You are absoulutely right he has a beautiful voice, but when he first started the band he though that he didn't know how to sing so he started to scream when they needed vocals with of coure a very big Death Metal influence. You can clearly see his progress as a clean singer too. You have reacted the songs like To Bid You Farewell and The Drapery Falls from their early works. His voice is almost naive and not confident. But in songs like The Wilde Flowers or Moon Above Sun Below he is more confident and had a long way of clean singing. Him wanting to sing cleanly but also having one of the best harsh vocals out there is what gave Opeth its unique sound.

Opeth have added to metal the intellectuality and class that was needed. Seventies prog rock generation meets with extreme metal descendants, in a mix that expand the boundaries of rock music and leaves hope and space for the new things to come.

Happy Birthday :D Damnation/Deliverance was recorded (planned) as a double album, record company said no .. how silly. Strange you haven't done Bleak yet. Get too it :) Watching the liveshow "Lamentations Live At Shepherd's Bush Empire 2003" (both albums in one go) is a must do for any Opeth fan. Why the growl? Death/Blackmetal bs . Its the music style. What Opeth do different is the mix.

Yesssssss it's the song. Apparently Åkerfeldt's grandma passed away during the recording of the albums. And not only did they have a different drummer, but also a different guitarist. My drummer friend for the longest time criticized the new drummer for not playing the ending bass drum pattern as well as the previous drummer. I think he's just fine, but I gotta say I really liked the previous drummer. What I really love about the last riff is how the drums turn the riff around in time, I think the riff isn't even and the drums play even. The constant cymbal keeping the 4 time and then the drum pattern turning around on the riff. And how there's like a pull and push with the response to the beat depending on where the guitar hits land. I'm a sucker for that type of stuff. And they signal it so well, I think I've never missed the abrupt ending despite there being like a minute of the same riff repeating trance like in a 13 minute song. Love it. The drum patterns in these twin records were just something really exciting, make me think of Gavin Harrison of Porcupine Tree. Same for the guitarist, Lindgren had amazing taste, really soft and jazzy rhythmic patterns and melodies, but Åkesson is a fantastic player too and has found his groove in the band. This song is super fun to play on guitar. All the tritone stacks and odd fingering patterns, really odd chord shapes and often playing open strings in the back of a regular chord making it sound really juicy. Especially in the riff that you really liked where they play B5 type of chord but let the open B and E strings ring, then drop the bass note to A but otherwise the same chord, then some fascinating odd chord forms following, like D5 with the 5 coupled in bass, then like A5 but the 5 replaced by minor 3 (C), B with minor 6 and the octave coupled with open B string and ending with Bb5 with 5 coupled in bass. All the 5 chords with the octave of course. Really unusual forms of chords in a rock song. At least according to their official tab book and they seem to be playing very similarly on stage. This song also plays a lot with 5 chords, bare octave interval "chords" and throwing the occasional tritonus in there as a spice. It's like taking your usual 5 chords in rock and putting all kinds of sweet changes all over the riffs to change it. And the groove of the time signatures and rhythms. Deliverance in general is such a good album with the nice changing between rough and kind. Some of my favourite acoustic patterns and clean vocals, and some of my favourite aggressive parts, some of my favourite solos. Bleak from Blackwater Park is another very Deliverance album like song. It's a good album as well for this colder "blue/grey" feeling music period. But Still Life, man that's a good theme album and the sounds and riffs and everything. They even used ebow, an electronic bow for guitar to create musical landscapes. And they really color coded the albums nicely to the feel of the music. Like Orchid has that purple/pink orchid, Morningrise is green (at least in my head, the picture itself is black and white), My Arms Your Hearse strong purple, Damnation and Deliverance very grey, Blackwater Park blue (in my head at least, another one of those very black and white but I feel like it's a foggy blue forest close to winter), Still Life red. I really feel those colors matching the emotions. It still surprises me how much Åkerfeldt plays solos. Like he always downplays his ability to play leads and solos or shred, but he's all over it in many songs. Regarding the vocals, it often feels to me like the growling or clean is based almost solely on the music behind the vocals. You'd think the softer parts had softer message and the harsher parts had harsher message, but I haven't had any real sense of noticing that with the lyrics ever. Tiny bit you didn't specifically mention was when the clean vocal section came where he sings higher and higher notes, while the lyrics go "soaring higher". Would be fun if you one day reacted to Ihsahn's Unhealer where Åkerfeldt feats in vocals, or Bloodbath where he used to sing. So different performances by him in all contexts. Also one of the "newer" Opeth songs, The Lotus Eater from Watershed (the band changed in my opinion after Ghost Reveries, that's why "new"). It had some of the weirdest hooks and surprises that I've heard, I couldn't believe my ears when that single came out at the advent of the new record that I had been waiting "are people allowed to do this?". I bet people are also waiting for Black Rose Immortal from Morningrise. That's the one song that people would love to hear live but it's so long that they rarely if ever play it. But people love it, it's so beautiful. The cover suggestions are great, I think Remember Tomorrow from Iron Maiden is really good one from Opeth though, better than original. And Bridge of Sighs from Robin Trower is unbelievable. Åkerfeldt and Wilson also made an album together as a duo project called Storm Corrosion back in 2012.

@blppt Жыл бұрын
"It still surprises me how much Åkerfeldt plays solos. Like he always downplays his ability to play leads and solos or shred, but he's all over it in many songs." Not so much since Fred joined. I think previously that Peter was just "at Mikael's level" of lead playing (not notably superior to Mike), but Fred is a technical monster, far superior to any guitarist Mikael has played alongside, so he seems to let Akesson play most of the leads post- Ghost Reveries. He still plays his album solos live though.

I probably would not have heard of Opeth, except that Steven Wilson was involved with them , and I bought the Ghost Reveries album based on that association alone. @@blppt Yeah, I know. At the time, Ghost Reveries was the latest album (and only one in stock), so I went with it, trusting Steven's taste in general. I was not disappointed. But I've gotta tell you, for a more or less folk/jazz guy, Ghosts of Perdition was a real eye opener. And ear opener.

This era of Opeth was a riff fest theatrical journey with the different points of view with the harsh/clean vocals and the use of the synth in a heavy band like this is done so well. Love this era of Opeth. Doug. Ask your brother if he is a fan of Ne Obliviscaris. If not, I think he would dig them quite a bit.
