The Dance That Changed Animation Forever

In the year 1991, the Walt Disney Animation team achieved something that had never been done before. With the completion of the dance in Beauty and the Beast, animation history had been made. A fully computer generated background was achieved, rendered with realistic textures, reflections, assets, lights, and shadows. This is the story of how that team accomplished this.
Since that legendary dance, animators across the globe have utilized this process to push the boundaries of what is possible with animation. Every year, more and more studios use the techniques and technology that stemmed from Beauty and the Beast, and it fascinates me every time I see it. Let me know what your favorite use of CGI in animation is in the comments down below!

@@DrewMalou we will eventually. As anime becomes more popular, kids, teenagers, and young adults will draw inspiration from them and incorporate that style into future works. It also helps that more and more people are becoming tired of the poor story quality coming out of Hollywood, and are starting to look overseas at other styles of media. I’d give it by the end of the decade if not sooner where we will begin to see anime style artwork and animation influencing American made shows and movies.

From what I understand, AoT didn't really have that much of a budget. It wasn't a fly-by-night operation, since Wit Studio had startup funding from Production IG, but the AoT Production Committee didn't put much money into the show and had very demanding schedules. The reason the show looks so good is because of the A-list of talented lead animators who would compete with each other for the most sakuga-filled sequences, and the animation schedule was non-stop crunch for the teams. You can see the cracks in the seams when you look at the dialogue-heavy scenes - 90% of the dialogue scenes in Seasons 1-3 are static shots of static characters against static backdrops and if you were lucky - _if you were lucky_ - you might get some lip flap. The money situation improved when the production committee finally realized how popular the show was (they literally thought the live action movies were going to be more popular than the anime) in the fourth season, and brought MAPPA in-house, allowing MAPPA to get returns on investment from blu-ray sales, whereas Wit as an outsourced studio never saw an extra dime from the hard work they put into the show.

James Baxter is really a legend! He's animated not only this gorgeous scene but countless other memorable scenes for Disney! One that really stuck with me is the scene in hunchback of Notre Dame when Quasimodo lifts Esmeralda before the crowd - James can really nail camera turns

It's partly because there are more small companies making anime - its become more affordable to make because of CGI, but the downside is that it's usually not the best stuff. Crunchyroll will fund anything these days. On the flipside, we now have Netflix funded anime like Violet Evergarden, which really shows what big-budget anime can look like. It's the most stunning, fluid anime I've seen in terms of lighting, animation, design etc.

The people behind the AoT adaptation are geniuses. They made 3d not look out of place by only doing 3d on buildings and not on characters in fast-paced scenes where they can simply blur out mistakes and hide imperfections using motion blur. The characters in fast-paced scenes are typically maneuvering in the air, running or just having their feet off the ground, also removing the "floating/weird footing" look when a 2d character stands in a 3d rendered area. (an example of a weird footing/floating look when a 2d character is in a 3d space is in 9:46, check the footing on the guy casting something while the camera changes perspective)

In terms of Attack on Titan (and other anime) It's more literally frames=money (per drawing pay) for some studios and time=money for others (salary pay, which is very rare). A scene could have limited animation but still move crazy dynamic and the animator would get paid less than someone who's scene isn't as dynamic but uses more frames. And in terms of budget, I don't think Attack on Titan had anything special compared to other shows budgets, they just had the animators, schedule and episode structure down pat. Anime usually don't get financial special treatment unless it's pokemon or something, they had a budget increase for x&y but that show didn't end up looking like one punch man, it's all about planning, structure and talent.
@DrewMalou
@DrewMalou 3 жыл бұрын
Great points! The paying by frames is interesting for animation. I know that WIT studio had staffing and other production issues (which lead them to use MAPPA for season 4). And if I recall correctly, I believe the budget for each episode of AOT was around $150k - $250k, which I believe was significantly higher than most shows. But yeah, the "movement=money" definitely would apply to salaried animators, like the Disney team, where certain scenes would just take longer to completely animate. Thanks for watching and for sharing the knowledge!

Seeing the montage of amazing AoT shots almost made me cry, they're so beautiful! It helped me to once again appreciate why I love AoT's animation so much, and notice little details I never considered before. It's amazing how all this was possible due to a little Disney dance scene (that has since aged quite well too!)

Y'know, every minute more than 500 hours of content is uploaded to KZfaq, it is humanly impossible to watch that sheer amount of content even with the will of John Wick himself. But every now and then you get that one video, that one creator that just blows everything else out of the water. A video that starts an ember at the sight of the thumbnail and then makes it erupt into a wildfire, pouring fuel with every word, fact every show mentioned turning a simple feeling of curiosity into a mega fan. This is what it means to make CONTENT, someone that doesn't chase after the next Viral, but leaves you with a sense of excitement, opportunity, nostalgia and then makes you want to run to whoever is the nearest to you and tell them everything you just learned. The best advertisements are those that aren't actually ads, the nuisance that makes you mash the skip button, but this, a simple video that rekindles every feeling of pride that you ever had for something

Wow. I am blown away by your comment! Thank you so much. It is remarks like these that remind me why I make videos in the first place.... it's not only to share the knowledge and facts of storytelling, but to celebrate the joy, hype, energy, and emotions that these stories impact us with! Thank you for reminding me of that. Thank you for watching. And the last thing I can say is that if you liked this video.... I'm just getting started! 😁👍

Repent of sin! The Gospel: JESUS died for our sins on the cross, HE shed HIS holy, innocent , precious blood for us (HIS blood washes away ALL sins) HE was buried but on the third day GOD raised HIM from the dead. All you have to do to be saved is: Believe in JESUS, trust in HIS blood. JESUS did everything for you, no works are required for salvation (Ephesians 2:8-9) . An example of amazing changing perspective in recent 2D animation would be from Steven Universe's last episode with White Diamond. There is a pan around the character that is so silky smooth I genuinely thought it was CG the first time I saw it. Guess who animated it? James Baxter.

The title, plus the thumbnail made me immediately think of the one thing Beauty and the Beast and Attack on Titan have in common, that dynamic camera movement with the ballroom and with Levi swinging between buildings. That ballroom scene really was the first instance where 3D elements were incorporated in a 2D animated production to make animation beyond interesting and the production team behind Attack on Titan did it better than anybody else, by far. Unfortunately some people fail to acknowledge the significance of using 3D models to make animation more convenient and the hardwork that goes into it.
@DrewMalou

I remember seeing the movie Beauty and the Beast when I was a kid. It was a beautiful movie and the dance scene was not the only thing in the film, but the icing of a well developed cake that had a beautiful story and build up with the two characters. I think the reason why there was allot of effort and love into the film was most likely due to what was going on at the time in Disney and how Howard Ashman was dying due to Aids and he was such a talented song writer. So I think there was a strong motivational push to make Beauty and the Beast the film it became to be.
@DrewMalou

That's a good point. Menken and Ashman were such a good combination for the music of the movie. Definitely should do a video covering the two of them!
