Duck NC is a great place to visit. People come here for a fun filled beach vacation. The town is full of great beaches, shops, and good places to eat. But most of the beach goers do not know about Duck’s dangerous history.

Oh wow, very interesting...I stumbled across your video while looking for something else but thought I'd ask - do you know there are so many low flying military planes around the area? My husband and I were staying at an air bnb pretty close to the beach (Kitty Hawk) and I heard a rumble, looked out the window and saw a Chinook? (from my research) flying so so close to the house. It freaked me out a bit! I see a lot of people talking about this but no one says what they're doing. Is it just training, do you know?
@HistoricForrest
@HistoricForrest Жыл бұрын
The Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard have bases in Virginia and North Carolina. They do training flights up and down the coast all the time. If you see Coast Guard over water, is usually a search effort for some one.

Going there in early September, wondering what will the weather be like 😳
@HistoricForrest
@HistoricForrest 3 жыл бұрын
Early September is still warm most of the time, but not real hot like the summer. The rain is always un-predictable. Over all I would say the weather is good that time of year.

Sunset Grill, great drinks, lousy food. Duck Deli, best BBQ around. I've seen, on many occasions, people walking out with 5 or $600 worth of sandwiches.

Well Duck is certainly a wonderful place, last I checked we had less than 400 full time residents. Everyone is aware of the bombing range that now has a cable around its perimeter. For a long time, anyone could walk onto the range, the group managing the pier allowed visitors and surfers to park up by the pier. The Duck pier was a wave magnet for larger ocean swells, I would meet local surfers who I hadn't seen in years after hurricanes, when the waves were massive and we all used the pier to paddle out into the swells. The story goes a group of out-of-town surfers damaged some exposed equipment and a move was made to limit access erecting the perimeter cable. I am only aware of one local who lost some fingers to exposed ordinance. However, constructing homes around the range has turned up many antique Laurel & Hardy type explosives. Large 16 to 18" ordnance with 4 tail fins and a front charge triggered by a button style point. It was exactly this point charge responsible for blowing off by buddy's fingers. Normally we would fine a few of these bombs excavating or digging pilings into the sand. The most we ever recovered was 11 under one house. Today, the coyotes appear to have claimed the range as home, once I observed a Bobcat, more often many deer. We have all heard many stories of how much ordinance is buried on the range and occasionally there is a sweep of the range, one time turning up an old tripod machine gun. (maybe legend) Today our town police and fire station are on Army Corp. donated land.

Where exactly is the bombing range in Duck? Was there for the first time last year and never noticed anything.
@HistoricForrest
@HistoricForrest 2 жыл бұрын
The bombing range was on the North side of Duck. Where the fire station is and where the Army Corp of Engineers has all of the signs up warning not to go on government land.

Right now the water temperature is about 60 degrees. By late may it will be chilly, but you can swim in it. I do not know what the temperature will be.

NO OFFENSE BUT IF YOU ARE ADVERTISING THE CITY OF DUCK,N.C.AS A TOURISM AND BEACH LOCATION AND WARNING PEOPLE OF POTENTIAL EXPLOSIVES ON LAND FROM OLD NAVY PRACTICES THEN WHY WOULD YOU THINK PEOPLE WILL COME THERE OR VACATION THERE.
@HistoricForrest
@HistoricForrest 2 жыл бұрын
I am not advertising. I am telling people the history and maybe preventing someone from getting hurt. One person left a comment on this video that his buddy lost three fingers to a piece of unexploded ordnance that he messed with instead of reporting it. Duck is a great place. Just stay off the bombing range.

This is kind of cool I think. We’re staying pretty close to there and wondered what the Army Corps of Engineers signage was about. You can look out at the area from the nearby access. Gonna check it out (as safely as possible) in the AM. Glad for the video. Super interesting history.
