In this video you will be seeing one common and possible side effect of using a strong 2K clear to do headlight restoration which is actually very common and a very wrong.
these lights are from a (2008 Mercedes GLK 350)
⚠️NOT ALL 2K CLEARS ARE THE SAME-they vary in harnesses and uses in this video the number one worst that we speak of is the regular 2K clear spray Max which is a great product but not for headlight use.
I've done "OVER A THOUSAND HEADLIGHTS" and growing, more and more every day. I've tried DOZENS of different ways and combinations of products. find out what I've discovered to be the best.

I just use same clearcoat sealer I put on my car body twice a year. What I have learned about autobody work is if the manufacture of the product doesn't approve it use on something don't use it for that. Urethane clearcoat was never made for headlight lens plastic.

It's okay it's closer to a normal compound versus the 3M stuff .. I try to tell everybody you can't really measure most things against any 3M product it's going to be light years ahead.. although McGuire's is a big reputable detail company.. it's apples to oranges... Better yet it's iguanas to Godzilla's..lol Three hours got so much money and literally has scientists numerous numerous scientists and paid studies that last for years just on products.. other companies not so much... Hi I ordered some Maguires headlight coating, it will be here in a couple days. I have sanding discs 500 grit and 800 grit. Can I buy 2000 or 3000 grit and do that step by hand? Unless I find the discs in that grit, and can afford them. In another video you mentioned the discs with 3000 grit are expensive ? Can I know if they are 3M, or ? If I have to do the final sanding by hand, should I wet sand that step? I noticed you used only a very thin coat of the coating at the end. Is that one coat all that is needed for best results? I bought a used 2017 Volvo Wgn XC90. The plastic is as bad as I’ve seen. I’m assuming it’s important to very thoroughly sand and not use the coating until you’re sure it’s been sanded very well? When it’s needed again, will it need as much sanding as the first time? Thanks very much! I’m grateful to have found your clips before I used the wrong method !

My guy, you do realize most car bumpers are also PC?? This clear is literally made for the headlight lens material. In terms of optical clarity, yes, you won’t get anywhere near oe grade coatings. But 100% that spray max is one of the best ways to do it. Don’t dog on it just because it isn’t marketed as a headlight coating. Also, bro said he’s a headlightologist😂🫣

@theheadlightrestorationpro
@theheadlightrestorationpro 10 ай бұрын
I would never recommend it for cars or headlights... Robbing Peter to pay Paul.. typically a lot of things happen in the form of damage underneath the surface on pain or headlights and it's only recommended to keep these things on for so long the nine times out of 10 when removing them from the headlight they will pull off your clear coat and there's a high possibility of overheating which leads to other primitive damage down the road also it inhibits the light output significantly (it can only be so transparent) because of the different layers A lot of the lightest diminished... See my video why not to double coat..kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hM2ogayetKfTc40.html Plus a lot of other things..

Hey. Did you try to coat your headlights with Johnsons Future/Floorpolish? I coated my headlights with this stuff three years ago and they are still more or less crystal clear. It dries superfast but it can be a mess if you get it on your fingers as it is very sticky. It dries very hard and is very cheap. It`s for use on tiles but it works great for this purpose as well.

Why not clean with cleaner after polishing? I'm an auto painter and the polish can leave a light residue.
@theheadlightrestorationpro
@theheadlightrestorationpro Жыл бұрын
Well... A lot of people have trouble with this ..the reason is because this is specific Cleaner polish design for hard lens & plastic,...it is designed to add a slight layer or shield of polish oil behind..this is to add hydration back into the headlight (polycarbonate) surface which has been stripped down by the process..(this should be the case for other plastic polishes as well) also this left behind residue adds to the headlights health and clarity in the long run...also there's no need to clean it off or add in a kind of solvent whether it be alcohol or ammonia base because nothing you can put on there can make the headlight service and environment more sterile than 7800 RPM... The friction alone sterilizes the surface let alone the number of rotations of any given spot.. AKA it's extremely sterile and clean... Also when you like this down afterwards with these ammonia base and I'll call Base products you're removing a lot of the oil deposits that behind of the residue which counteracts everything I just said and leaves its own residue behind which damage is clarity also brings up the likelihood of leaving streaks behind.. So the #1 reason.. the residue is good for the headlights and headlights health.. #2 nothing is going to clean/sterilize that headlight surface better than 7,800 RPM .. There is not interference with adhesion of clear coats after this, in fact it's somewhat of an engagement.. Thank you for watching..💯

Don't agree with ppf... It's too thick and overheats headlights and also you're going to run into a lot of problems down the road with peeling and moisture getting underneath it and overheating... And almost every time you remove it you have to get a headlight restoration because it damages your coating.. As far as ceramic coatings they are too thin... Which will cause damage in many different ways, also it falls under double coating for both... Which affects the functioning of your headlight you're losing dozens of yards of light output... Check these video. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oZ6Pn82Gu7fKpqM.htmlsi=4NoO2WBiutvoa3Ue kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hM2ogayetKfTc40.htmlsi=8pVVPvWTaaMtnEZ3

Have you tried Spray Max 3684068? That is their dedicated headlight 2k clear, its supposed to be flexible to combat the cracking isssues you showed in the video. The clear in the video and the one most people have been using 3684061 is meant for painted surfaces and isn't made to flex what so ever so that's why I imagine most of these are cracking just after a few seasons.

Same product almost identical...just has more UV repellent in it... Terrible product for headlights..same outcome...SE the read button... that's the issue....the hardener......
@alext.4525
@alext.4525 10 ай бұрын
Significantly higher solids content in the SM headlight clear. The issue is not the presence of a hardener; that just makes it less forgiving to improper application, and obviously much more difficult to remove should things go wrong. The key to getting good results is to follow the correct process. Obviously for the average DIYer this is not a given, so I can understand the sentiment that using 2K clear is risky. However, if applied properly (and that means using a product intended for application over polycarbonate!) you can absolutely get good and enduring results.

Well said but I have not encountered many of any that are specifically designed for use of polycarbonate and usually when they are quite frankly they're full of shit they're just like any other.. everything you said is correct but the main beef with the 2K clear this typically headlight health.. in my experience no matter how good somebody is at applying it me being professional and using it plenty of times and or anything else I've ever come across done by professional ends up having devastating effects to the headlight in the long run even though initially it looks good and normal.. I believe this is because does not have a high enough concentration of UV protection inside of it, proper application of it is failed and flawed (to apply properly) and overheating abrasiveness and corrosiveness of the actual chemicals... On the other stuff sucks how difficult it is to use-how difficult is to remove Etc.. the contrary to believe my main issue with it is headlight health as I just stated... Also there's not too many that I can even think of I've ever come across that state design for headlights or design for you some polycarbonate and or plastic... I've seen a lot of products.. even with vehicle 2K clears typically designed to adhere to paint and more solid surfaces other than transparent polycarbonate... The 2K clears without the hardeners in them that are actually designed for clear coat on vehicles those aren't too bad.. but they still have the lasting side effects... Also one other key factor is they do not come out looking as good as products that are used and design for headlights because those come entitled with the utmost clarity meaning they created to be photo transparent or optic transparent... 2K clears are usually made to be translucent bit of a difference some say splitting hairs but when it comes to projecting headlight it's a world of difference... Like I always tell people who I train or deal with it's only so much for the headlight to look good and clear.. not everything clear is going to function at 100% functionality... And since they inhibit light projection.. but there's such a long list of negatives in any 2K clear.. and the only one or two positives are actually negatives-being hard-and lasting too long...

I believe that's a car coating... And just once again my very and motto is if it's not for the specific use for why use it especially when there's thousands of products out there for the specific use.. With that being said I've tested out and have used a live testing actual clientele vehicles ceramics as well even ceramics that were specifically designed for headlight restoration which are very scarce... Testing that I've done pretty much tells me that the ceramics in general are as clear as made for headlight substance.. they tested exactly the same and more than one occasion... The biggest problem I have with these is the application method.. As a rule of thumb any kind of spraying whether it be from a rattle can or from a spray gun and compressor spray is always going to be superior in delivery method... By far.. it's unadulterated in forms of perfect shell while the towel lets another things leave streaking behind an adulterates even if you can't see them.. And number two is a typically are very thin but in my experience any kind of double coating no matter what it is just fuck shit up even if it looks good it messes up how the headlight functions far as the light escaping.. so using one coats hell even if you put three it's such a thin product that you're going to have other issues with impact , from driving and things hitting the headlight which believe it or not is a part of everyday driving so you will be developing pitting and more prone to any kind of cracking.. And there's a couple other things where it doesn't really provide adequate insulation from the Sun or environment... The only thing that it's good at is transparency...

I'm pretty sure this is what happened to mine. I had a guy clean my headlights a couple of years ago and he did a good job, but now my headlights need doing again and they are crazed with those micro cracks. I bet he used 2K on them. The crazing must have altered my beam pattern. I went out late last night and on a dark road there was barely any difference between high and low beam, apart from the high beams lit up the sides of the road close to my car a bit more but did nothing for distance. In fact the low beams gave a little bit more distance than the high.

Really you should never use any 2K clear for headlights.... that's the worst thing you could possibly use... What's the drawbacks are negative points of it are added up is insane there's too many things wrong... I've spoke about this in multiple videos... In general once they are mixed completely the ones with the hardeners ,once the motion has stopped they start dematerializing immediately(not the proper mixture) the chemical composition gets worse and worse every passing minute.. although you can probably still use them a couple hours later they won't be the same as within the first 20 minutes...(and the proper headlight coating is all about pitch of hardness and transparency) Anything with the hardener in it should not be used on headlights.. so primarily the FAST MAX spray hand even if it's the one that says is designed for headlights.,(same thing extra UV).. Also even the regular 2K clears that are vehicle clear coat in a can that don't have the hardeners in it or trash for headlights they're not meant to be transparent more so to be made to be translucent there's a huge difference even though there's very similar in wording and in application.. if you had to use one of course the vehicle clear coat without the hardeners is the way to go but they are all bad for headlights ( not designed for ) and have pretty much overall negative effects in compared to the design for headlight product... And leave behind much much damage in the long run . But just to be specific about the question THE FAST MAX IS THE WORST ONE OUT OF ALL of them... Only thing more worse than that is when you self mix your hardener into your clear coat and use it in a spray gun, people tend to be heavy-handed on the hardener it's not premixed... Also they don't dry fast enough and almost always require work after being sprayed.. this is not typical with actual clear coat design for headlight.. meaning with most typical headlight clear coats are set it and forget it once you apply it's done and they all typically dry very fast. THE FASTER THE DRY THE BETTER dealing with headlights because the polycarbonate is susceptible to static cling and just general debris passing by mix that with the fact that most headlight Restorations are performed outside or in a non-sterile environment can lead to things sticking to the light which will be seen in a transparent environment... Thanks for watching...

Have you tried the Spray Max headlight clear? I've done several headlights with regular 2K in a spray gun over 1000 grit and never had an issue, so this is a bit of a surprise to me. Is the Spraymax that causes this somehow different from automotive refinish 2K, maybe it has more reducer than what's used in a paint gun? I just bought regular Spraymax to fix some real carbon fiber on my GM. Any experience with this? Thank you for the video!

There are many different types of 2K clear this is one of the hugest problems with people using it for headlights.... It's probably 10 different kind if not more... It's time for furniture, kinds for automotive, too many different variabilities.... Spraymax is the most devastating whether it's the original or the headlight one... The substances are not made for headlights... People think that they can spray anything on headlights because they're clear they have drastic drawbacks even if the light comes out perfect it's going to end up damaging the light sooner or later.. even if the light comes out perfect looking your headlight is not functioning properly this is not a photo transparent product no too clear is.... But that being said that automotive 2K clear is going to be a lot less and much better than a spray Max if I had to use a 2K clear it would be an automotive 2K clear same stuff that goes on paint... The reason why people have to use 2K clear when the headlight is foggy which is not how you're supposed to clear coat headlights is because that's freshly off of 600 Red or 1000 Grit where they're attempting to have this product grip the headlight because it's notorious for peeling off... They have to do this also because it's not made for headlights made for headlight products damn near will stick to glass well actually will..... But yes all 2K clear is not created equal some are worse than others... 2K clear is the worst because of introduces a shitload of hardener in the light which doesn't even make it dry faster it just makes it dry hard it dries extremely slow where headlight products dried typically in 5 minutes are less for many reasons... The one spreading of a spray gun is up to the discretion of the purses spraying them if they introduce the hardeners which is the worst part of 2K clear but there are many many other worst parts as well... Just got the new video.. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aMWhaaho0cimqnk.htmlsi=fnR3uztbXE_uCq21

@theheadlightrestorationpro

@MrAchilles113 somewhat they both have no place on a vehicle headlights.. the thickness and dexterity of the product add to refraction big time even though they look clear sometimes and somebody can be really good at using it the headlights won't function properly and they always fall apart peeling or cracking and in the long run damage to headlight in many different ways... This is why they are not designed for headlights and one of the manufacturers do not design them and market them for headlights....

2K with no hardener…? So 1K? Perhaps I’m misunderstanding, but 2K is so named due to the presence of a second component: the hardener. Sure, you could purchase a 2K product and use it without the addition of the hardener, but I’m not sure why one would do that.

So if the hardener is not used it won't crack like this?
@theheadlightrestorationpro
@theheadlightrestorationpro Жыл бұрын
It wouldn't crack as bad... Nowhere near... But at the same time it's a substance that is not made for what people are using it for in terms of headlights... You still have to that . It does not have adequate amount of UV protection, an adequate amount of UV protection designed for longevity on clear transparent services.. meaning what it dies out relativity flast even though it's remains clear... Which leads to overheating, premature cracking,and spider cracking, and all kinds of other damages ... It's not designed for headlights.. the hardener is just 50% of the equation. Also one huge thing is it's extremely harder to remove from headlight surfaces Compared to other headlight certified clear coats.... This alone raises the probability of damaging trying to remove. ... Whether the headlight or the vehicle..

So I just used the 2K clear you are preaching to not use, and got some slight spider cracking in certain spots. I hadn't seen your videos before I got started restoring my Headlights and now I have fresh 2k clear that I'm trying to remove using your methology. Is there anything you'd recommend besides using a lower grit like p320 on fresh clear? I'm afraid these cracks may be within the plastic lens like in this video, instead of being within the layers of clear coat. The spider cracks showed up the day after I sprayed my Headlights :/ I will say, I was using the steps shown in a video by Chrisfix, he has a link to the 2K clear that your saying to stay away from. His video has millions of views so it may be leading people in the wrong direction unfortunately. The video was made years ago, so maybe there wasn't a good headlight clear coat on the market yet.
@theheadlightrestorationpro
@theheadlightrestorationpro Жыл бұрын
I would get it off as soon as possible... The longer it stays on the worse it is for your headlights... The Moore cracking that's going to develop. It bonds extremely too hard... And can crack your headlights rather quickly it has no flexibility... That mixed with overheating because the lack of UV protection (much less than a headlight certified product) and also does not expand it all.. the headlight expands and contracts when heated and cooled... Get it off as soon as possible... And make sure you get it all off.....

I am redoing my own headlights, which i did the wrong way with Rust-Oleum after watching Chrisfix, so i have ro remove the Rust-Oleum clear coat layer first. The sanding dust and surface seems to look white, and the sanding disc doesnt have much resistance, but i dont think ive gotten all the scratches out. (so i must not have gotten past the clear coat layer yet) I have been using the 500 grit disc, but now im going to get a lower grit and hand sand to try to remove clear coat. (Dont have the discs)

It should be visibly noticeable and or just noticeable by feel... The actual texture should change as a parent as if you had an ice cream cake and you switch layers from Cake to ice cream you should know the difference it's very different.. actual polycarbonate is going to feel different than the 2K or any clear coat.... Beyond that visually you should be able to see it as well...

@@theheadlightrestorationpro thanks!! 😀 I will have to check out the feel. From appearance, it looks chalky and white like in your videos, but I can still see a spider crack spot and a few small scratches close to the surface which I feel means that I haven't gotten below the clear coat layer yet (the surface under the clear coat is pretty scratched from how I had sanded it before applying it, and I assume I am still seeing those scratches b/c the clear coat is still covering it). I'll have to go look carefully. Well the polycarbonate itself may be spider cracked from the hard clear coat too like in your video. The resistance on my sanding disc is there, it's just very small. Maybe the actual polycarbonate is like ice when sanding on it. If so, I'm not there yet.

@whatitisnt. Some are better than others., But most if not all are not meant to be applied to Headlights...(even the ones that say they are aren't really) Just went over 150 products to use for headlight coating for sale makes absolutely no sense to you something that isn't meant for it ,when there's this much out there.. 2K clears specifically designed for other things where headlight certified products are designed for headlights.... The most mildest form of 2K clear you can use on a headlight still has half of the backlash and damaging effects of using 2K clear.. The only one I would ever use is 2K clear that is actually used for vehicle clear coat... The kind that says UV coating, the kind that does not need a hardener in it... But as I said basically how are they all trash.. just a basic principle they're not designed for this use... Just because shoe paint is black should you paint your car with it? Just because car paint could be applied to a house why would you ever do so there's going to be some kind of side effect because it's not designed for this purpose...

Dear HLPro! Firstly, let me thank you for all pro stuff that you are sharing within your KZfaq channel. I am starting my headlight restoration business in Israel and your videos are extremely helpful to do the right job, not just cutting money for nothing. Thank you again. 1. Meguires clear coating is not available for sale right now, I think they don't sell it separate, only with their kits. What do you think of Sonax UV coating? 2. 3M hardlens polish also not available right now, is the 3M headlight renewal the same thing? Can PlastX do the same result at polishing state?

I'm glad I watched this. I blame the manufacturer though. I understand cheap plastic being used on the less expensive cars but a car with $900 headlights there is no excuse not to just go ahead and use something better than the same polycarbonate that's on the cheapest of autos.

Yes believe it or not it's a vehicle standard.. not really sure if they could even if they wanted to.. it has to meet certain guidelines.. when the lights start costing a lot of money it's generally what's going on inside of them if they have more adaptive parts that means adjusting and smart just makes it more expensive also the shape and size... But yeah it sucks even I wish I didn't have to worry about it sometimes... (If I didn't do what I do..lol🤓🤣☺️

@@theheadlightrestorationpro You know what I've been researching this a lot since I made that comment and apparently polycarbonate was actually the best option car companies seem to have at the moment. This light in glass form would be much more expensive to make and much more fragile. One hit from a rock could ruin it and that's even more than $900. I'm starting to see the big picture. I see a secure future for you and your business, that's for sure! 👍

Polycarbonate is polycarbonate. Processing affects its properties far more than who makes it. It is also the single best polymer to use for headlights. It is sensitive to certain chemicals, so can be destroyed if you don't know what you are doing.

You must not know how expensive a new set are..lol I mean if you have it like that but then you'd be storing away your money because all they need to sell that restoration.. most two vehicle headlights range from $300 plus to $2500 plus per light.... And that's without installation which is some cars will take about 2 hours of Labor which mechanic charge $180 an hour for labor... Or a typical headlight restoration on most vehicles are anywhere from $115 to $250.... Hey but if you want to throw your money away I'm perfectly good headlights for it to happen again and again and again.. some people just have money to burn...😊

Hello HRP, Thank you for the video. You saved me big time now because I watched ChrisFix video and I was about to order clear coat and apply it to my car. I would like to take your opinion on PPF application to headlights after clearing/polishing. Can a good quality UV protective PPF protect headlight for a long time? kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i61lZ9ulmpzZiqM.html In this video one guy applies it but I want to take your opinion. Thanks in advance have a nice time.
@theheadlightrestorationpro
@theheadlightrestorationpro Жыл бұрын
Yes this is a great video I've watched this a couple times myself.. but no clear coat is more practical even if it doesn't last as long.. the main reasons why is that even if you apply ppf when you remove it you're going to have to have a headlight restoration again because it destroys what's underneath it through the weather and just the natural heat which nine times out of 10 kind of melts your clear coat into it.. it also can cause overheating of the headlight which develop permanent damage issues, promoting spider cracking, micro cracking, polycarbonate discoloring, and other heat related issues.. What are the other and number one reasons also is that it severely dampens your headlight projection abilities.. You're sacrificing probably anywhere between 15% and 25% of your light output... Which accounts for about 10 to 15 yards of light projection which is significant when it comes to seeing things on the road or being seen correctly.. Check out this video on why not to double coat and it kind of will clear you in on some of the side effects of ppf... Also like I said I've never seen a ppf get removed that didn't need headlight restoration afterwards..💯 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hM2ogayetKfTc40.html

I always suggest buying new headlights. If your headlights are simple, they will be cheap as well. If they're more expensive, then i guess you already have enough money to buy then new. I mean if you have the money to buy an expensive car, certainly you have enough to replace the headlights.
