If you have spent anytime on social media at some point you've had some interaction with an online troll, but who are these people? Why do they behave the way the do with their antagonistic, sometimes threatening behaviour?
In this podcast I look at the different kinds of cyberbully from the pest to the sadistic, the dark personality and motivations behind their behaviour.

17:41 As a "survivor" of long term cyberbullying and targeting, I hope my analogy won't be deliberately weaponized against me when I say: Do not expect trust, where broken bones have been laid, and those who've broken them have been lawless, and gleeful.

I've always felt that a troll wants to get a fight going, but from a safe and anonymous distance. It's cowardly, really.

@Jeanog Of course. They just do it to see people upset. But as you said, they cannot support any argument.

I'm never offended by these anonymous basement dwellers and sometimes I even like to mess with them. When I'm in that mood I start with something like " Whatever you say troll-bot". It puts them on the defensive if they reply at all.✌️

I mean, it's "easy", if that makes you feel better, more power to you actually.

Curiously, someone commented on a comment I made today, saying that neither I nor the presenter knows that we are talking about. And last week someone demanded that I reply to them, off the KZfaq site. Trolls indeed. I plan to continue to ignore them.

Internet is filled with these kinds of losers. Even positive helpful channels like this seem to attract them

Best policy is to block them and or ignore them

10:22 Imo online mob impact was covered well in a book by author Danielle Keats Citron. She is a privacy attorney, if I'm not mistaken, and I read this book when it first came out because of what I had endured. In my own experience, the part where, if memory serves me correctly, she described others' experiences of similar aggressions as being akin to a group's effect equaling the same psychological damage to the singled out, terrorized female as if she had been tortured by a psychopath.

I find trolls try to reply to your comment, taking in a different direction. The mistake I see people make is thinking they were misunderstood. You probably weren't. The troll is manipulating you. He's predicting your kind, and, you'll make that assumption, and respond accordingly. It's why they see you as a mark. TLDR: Like a narcissist, ignoring trolls wins. Interacting with them is loses: pointless, wastes time, harms tranquility.

So many KZfaq channels are no different than trolls. Some are about politics, human sexuality, religion, etc..

Thank you for your insights and detailed descriptions Darren. Yes, for some people it seems it feels better to reign in hell than to serve in heaven.

I must be a troll because I often point out errors in spelling in posts.

Your honesty is appreciated, but WHY do you do so? What is your motivation? What if someone is already under enough stress already and turned to social media for some time out away from already being bullied in their life. I don't mean to sound like a troll, but... GET A LIFE and find a different hobby please?

@PaceMaker76564 The floor is all yours.. how about you enlighten them yourself directly while you have this opportunity instead of redirecting YOUR "energy" back to me. Unless you are being tested for spelling or vocabulary in an EXAM.. there is NEVER any real NEED to correct another on a public forum. You seem to have some potential for being one of those types your self.. Where is your OWN self awareness here? Good day to you.

@PaceMaker76564 Good to hear you are not one of those types. However, you took your own time to attempt to 'correct' me also. Likewise, I do not understand for the life of me how people call out others for a measley spelling mistake on a PUBLIC forum. What are THEY trying to achieve? It only serves to embarrass, bring attention to and belittle another.. THAT is my frustration. Good day!!

@PaceMaker76564 This person is admitting they must be a troll, has not expressed any feelings of regret or remorse for it though? I don't seem to pick up any "vulnerability" either in their statement. Where is your discernment? Did they say they want to stop or change? Yet, you are making me feel guilty for pointing out the obvious and having an opinion on these spell checkers... Things that make you go hmmmmmmm?

Hi Darren. I’ve become a troll, unfortunately. I can’t even be bothered to explain why anymore either. Probably been a bit of a dick to the wrong people to be fair.
