Mike Flanagan is officially adapting The Dark Tower series from Stephen King into an ambitious new TV show, so this video will preview everything we know about this upcoming The Dark Tower TV series, including how the acclaimed horror director will translate the story from book to screen, who is likely to star in the series and when and how this new adaption of The Dark Tower will release.
The video will also take a look at previous failed adaptions of The Dark Tower, such as the 2017 movie starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey, as well as the cancelled Amazon pilot from Glen Mazzara, so as to see what lessons Mike Flanagan can learn for his planned adaption of The Dark Tower, which will apparently be faithful to the books and potentially connect to The Shinning and Doctor Sleep universes.

There have been so many false starts to a proper Dark Tower adaptation over the years I'm still in the "believe it when I see it" phase, but as a Tower Junkie the idea of Mike Flanagan doing it is on the same level as Denis Villenueve adapting Dune for me. You couldn't hope for a better fit with someone who loves and respects the source material. I truly hope it happens!

I'll admit that I didn't read Gerald's Game, but have read many other books. But, I thought that was an amazing movie, and guessed that they didn't veer too far from the book. To this day, I am STILL haunted by one of the scenes in that movie, where a certain character is first noticed in the corner of the room.

@@elscooter That scene was spot on from the book and yeah, super creeper moment. Carel Struycken was absolutely perfect for the role. Honestly, the book is an easy read and like I said, very close to the film. One book I read as a one-off thinking it would be more of a time killer and I ended up loving it was Rose Madder.

The main thing people should take away is this: The fans of the books should be the FIRST PEOPLE YOU CONSIDER when adapting a book series to the screen. The fan base are the people who are going to make or break your film/show. Also, treating the source material like it doesn't matter is NEVER going to work in favor of your adaptation. If you want to adapt a story, adapt the story--if you want to be an auteur, WRITE YOUR OWN MATERIAL.

The movie was, as the producers put it, “another turn of the wheel”. They freely admit to ignoring the books, instead putting their own take on the story. This killed the film. It wasn’t what fans of the books wanted to see, and we were glad it went down in flames. Here’s hoping that they finally do it right and stick to the books. Actually, considering the cyclical metaphysics alluded to in the book, and the fact it is essentially a multiverse story, I think that approach was pretty clever. In fact , almost necessary. My personal picks for the actor to play Roland are Zac Ephron (for a middle aged gunslinger, especially since he looks almost exactly like some of the illustrations). Scott Glenn would make a fantastic old Roland, and for a young Roland, I'd go with Timothée Chalumet. Side note, Lupita Nyongo would absolutely kill it as Detta/Odetta/Susannah, and Andrew Scott was practically born to play the Man In Black.

The Dark Tower series is by far King's best work, up until the ending. I hate the ending just as much as every other Stephen King story. I also REALLY hate that he ended up writing another ending to appease the fans. I think the Dark Tower story is rather easy to adapt, you just need to figure out the right medium and then remove all constraints from the studio so they can make a proper adaption. Also, the cast has to be great. I always picture Clint Eastwood as the Gunslinger, Roland Deschain of Gilead. Perhaps his son can fill the role, although he is short. I'm not an actor, but I would love to play the part.

This is one story I would like to see a prequel for as in the novels we barely get any in his prime bad ass Roland, he's either old and maimed or young an inexperienced. We need a story after he is trained but before he is washed up.

AFAIK Flanagan has no contract with Netflix anymore. The Fall of House Uscher was supposed to be his last project for them.

holy shit holy holy shit I really can't think of a director that I'd rather have doing this. Mike and his team are gonna kill it! I'm not sure why and I know they're not related, but just watching the whole fallout series really made me long for another go at the dark tower and cemented the fact that these movies could absolutely be made.

It's hit or miss.....The Boys, Reacher, Fallout, and The Terminal List are instances of where Amazon were kind of hands off and let the show runners do their things and it worked out whereas Wheel of Time and Rings of Powers are instances of complete and utter disasters where they hired the wrong show runners and execs were heavily involved. I think Mike Flannigan is the right show runner for a project like this, but will Amazon leave him alone and let him do what he does? They are already interfering with the Warhammer lore, which could make Henry Cavill jump ship. So one never knows with Amazon.

Daaaamn Amazon really went all in on Wheel of Time and Rings of Power. So much so they passed on this. Big swing and a miss... although in hindsight, maybe fantastical grand epics aren't their forte. They nail it with things like The Boys and Fallout.

Benjamin Evan Ainswoth as young Roland, Carla Gugina as his mother. Zach Gilford would make a good Eddie Dean and T'Nia Miller as Susanna. im sure there are others...

I have enjoyed his other tv series, and Doctor Sleep. Just knowing he would start from the 1st book is enough for me. As faithful an adaptation as possible is what matters. It doesn’t need to be exact but close will do it. Otherwise what is the point? I never even bothered to watch the movie version. King is one of my favourite writers, but all too often adaptation’s of his books fall far short of the wonder of his writing. I hope this goes as well as Mike’s other tv series. If it does, then it’ll be fantastic

I loved the first Half of those novels and you can tell the Dark Tower was written before he blew up in his career. I didn't like the last novel though, I think b/c of what he did w/ a certain character haha. Honestly if you are Stephen King fan you should read ALL THE DARK TOWER BOOKS! Why? B/c they are written over a 20-30 year period and you get to see how King's writing style "grew" over time.
