In the Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney plus show, fan's reactions were split when Darth Vader confronts his old Jedi Master for the first time since their lightsaber battle in Revenge of the Sith on Mustafar. Let's break down why this scene didn't work, and watch my re-edit of when Obi-Wan sees Anakin Skywalker walking down the street, casually killing people as he goes.

Wow it's heartfelt and cheesy like George Lucas himself wrote it. It's funny how Disney Vader hardly says anything unless he's making a joke when in fact Vader was quite the chatterbox in the original trilogy. Edit: actually Anakin talked a bunch in the prequels too. All the more reason to give Vader dialog.

Lol yeah, this felt super "realistic" to me once the dialogue was inserted. Probably because (as you say), it's low key cheesy and over the top just like we're used to Anakin talking.

I don't think it needs that much dialogue i think less is more in some cases they just went with none in this case. I think something about how he knows kenobi is there and how his weakness is getting others killed would be enough.

No, no matter what, the scene is bad. personally, I don't believe Anakin-Vader will kill innocent people. Yes, he killed younglings but those kids are Jedi, it is different than common weakling people. Vader gain nothing by it. If he want to sense Obi Wan, he can without the unnecessary killings. Why? Because there are 3 Force users there, all powerful in the Dark Side even if Obi Wan hide himself from The Force. Kylo Ren can sense Luke Skywalker through Force Skype with Rey and this is across planets. Vader is evil, but he only being evil for a cause.

Lol he was strangling his own generals whenever he disagreed. the fact that you think Vader was "too good to kill civilians" is actually crazy to me🤣

Those are his generals. Like I said, he is evil but not mindless evil, not being evil just for the sake of being evil. He was a slave, he was those poor people.

@@MizanQistina He hated the weakness that obi wan's existence brought to him. of course he would kill some randoms if it means getting to him.

Nope, Vader isn't a Star Wars video game character who kill people just for gaining Dark Side points. the scene is stupid making him out of character.

@@MizanQistina Failry sure Treko's point there is that Vader would harm innocent people to bait out Obi-Wan as part of his strategy, he's not doing it to "get dark side points" - if you missed the point that's cool, but misreading that deliberately is kinda lazy at best and disingenous at worst. I tend to agree with Treko, my guy Vader has done tonnnnnsssss of war crimes both before and after the helmet. It's my subjective view of morality but I think that slaughtering children, absent the context of annnnyyyyy of the Jedi stuff pretty much gives this character a blank cheque to murder whoever. Might just be me, but killing kids is pretttttttttyyyy much one of the worst things you can do. If you believe that killing Jedi kids is not as bad as killing random adult civillians (which is the spine of your argument as I understand it) that's totally valid and up to your subjective experience, but you can't then dismiss Treko's argument whole-cloth. What would have Vader do instead (obvs the writers could have not put the pieces in this position) but I'm genuinely curious, what's a better option here?

no dialogue was needed. his presence alone is menacing enough.
@DarthdYT
@DarthdYT Жыл бұрын
Being menacing isn't the point of that scene. He wasn't trying to intimidate, he was trying to lure. Regardless, it's really poor storytelling to force the audience to infer character motivation and that's exactly what I was trying to correct.

@trekoxgaming2 Жыл бұрын
@@DarthdYT you said menacing was not the point, it was intimidation? Not tryna be rude or anything, but I 1000% understood that he was trying to bait obi wan to save the innocent people.

@@trekoxgaming2 Interestingly I had the same take away as you - in an upcoming piece of content where we examine Reva, Darth makes a really compelling point about how a typical Star Wars reader understands the stories they are presented. I argue that Obi-Wan is a lot more of an adult story - specifically, that it relies heavily on subtext and inference. Without dogfooding his argument for him, Darth argues that a lot of the show doesn't work for him because it's not clear why charactes are doing things. I didn't have this issue personally because of the way I read text. But I have to confess that an average reader is more likely to fall on the conclusion Darth reaches. While I personally would have the street scene as it is, the millage on this will vary for a regular Star Wars reader. Out of curiousity Treko, what did you think of the final Obi x Vader fight scene?

I agree, all the dialogue added feels out of place. You can understand what is happening on screen without it. The first rule of cinema is show don't tell...
@Bogaloo1232
@Bogaloo1232 Жыл бұрын
I agree, totally absurd and unnecessary edit. Vader doesn’t need to speak to, let alone to taunt anyone to show his intentions in this scene. Everything in the added dialogue is showed clearly in the original scene, just by SEEING the actions of Vader. He’s obviously trying to lure Obi-Wan, and Obi-Wan is terrified to confront him yet hesitant to stay hidden. Not every action needs to be explained by dialogue, it’s the worst mistake in cinema and falling for it is just absurd. The scene might be not perfect, but the edit just makes it much worse, amateurish I would say.

Its seems like the writers like to misuse "show dont tell".

Lol that's a great point because we've brought up that phrase multiple times in our podcast reviews, usually as "they told but didn't show". This time they went too far and did the opposite 🤷‍♂️
