To anyone wondering why this happens, when you are on throttle, the front of the car lifts and more weight is placed on the rear of the car. This weight shift causes understeer. When you lift off of the throttle, the front of the car dips down, causing the rear of the car to suddenly go lightweight in the middle of a corner, inducing a large amount of oversteer.
@RobManser777 ай бұрын
Yes, but the root cause is a poor steering technique. In motorsport we have plenty of corners where you have to back off in the middle of them, when obviously driving right on the limit. We manage it bevause of proper steering technique.
@ruben_m89077 ай бұрын
@@RobManser77 No the root cause is the rear end weight shift, it's just not being prevented by proper steering angle. The steering angle doesn't cause the issue but it can fix it
@billder73047 ай бұрын
It's all inertia and weight loading. Lift-off oversteer happens most often when a driver underestimates a corner, panics and lifts off the throttle harshly midway through, which as you mentioned brings the weight forward and off the rear tires but also engine braking begins to slow the car, further pushing the weight forward and thus the rear no longer has enough traction to resist the inertial pull to the outside of the corner. While pushing a car hard, avoiding excessive instant load changes on the tires is what keeps sudden oversteer at bay, this includes gentler and more reactive steering inputs and gentler throttle and braking inputs. So yes, poor "steering technique" can cause lift-off oversteer, but the root cause is ACTALLY just generally rough car control.

Your reaction was good and you controlled it. Yep, it's a guaranteed symptom of any front wheel drive vehicle, but is marginal less in 4wd, (though off roaders are notoriously unbalanced) and least in rwd. But you can get it in any vehicle, except perhaps one with full length caterpillar tracks! 😁

@wordreet Жыл бұрын
@@mosswine5417 Depends on what you're doing with the throttle pedal at the same time.
@wrth Жыл бұрын
for RWD it's the mid and rear engined cars that have a lot of it. weight is centred towards the rear. MR2 is notorious for it since it's so light and usually people have cheap road tyres so the grip is low.
@gravemind653610 ай бұрын
@@mosswine5417 A lot of the time in FWD cars you will get understeer and once the front wheels regain traction it will unsettle the back end which in FWD cars is usually very light and cause snap oversteer. Its particularly bad when you get a car with good front tyres and shit back ones which happens a lot because the rear tyres last much longer and dry rot.
@SI0AX9 ай бұрын
@@mosswine5417 It mostly has to do with the weight distribution no so much what wheel are driven. Take a 50/50 RWD Miata for example, not really easy to get lift off oversteer unless you are trying really hard to induce it. FWD usually is 60/40 at best (usually) but can be 70/30. Pickup tracks that are RWD are the very similar as well due to the bed at the rear by design to be able to load the bed with more weight capacity, they have to make the rear lighter. The RWD cars that are a bit more interesting are RR and MR configurations. Like the Toyota MR2 and Porsche 911. The 1980 Porche 911s hand the Engine behind the rear axle, the newer iterations moved it a bit more forward to be on the rear axle or a bit further forward. The Toyota MR2 and newer Porsche 911s have the engine between the center and rear axle, not actually in the center. This makes it have 40/60 front-rear weight distribution. This causes "snap oversteer" from the weight of the rear wanting to lead and turn the car aggressively under forward weight transfer like braking. Basically braking or taking the foot off gas(slowing down) will transfer the weight forward on any car, making the weight distribution even worse than it's static values, thus a vehicle that already has very low weight at the rear, just gets a lot worse, less grip on the rear.
