One of the VERY few videos of actual snap oversteer. You can tell how he did react properly at first by staying on the throttle, so he didn't spin out from lift-off oversteer, but then he countersteered too far and/or too long = snap oversteer.

Can attest to this as I managed to make the car snap oversteer at the crainer curves by putting a wheel on the grass with all the weight over the front at high speed. This then involved a trip across the track and into the barrier. Luckily most of the damage was cosmetic and also to my ego haha

Slow it down to 1/4 playback speed and you can see around 3:07, the back end got light over the curb on the right-hander. Maybe he let off the gas..not sure ... it looks like the weight shifted forward about a second later, and the driver over corrected on the steering, and that put him into the grass on the left. Maybe a little less countersteering and not lifting abruptly on the throttle, and it could've been saved in a four wheel drift. Maybe. Once he it the lawn it was over. In a front-engined car if you weight shift forward, it can get tail happy, but there is less weight out back to throw around so it is easier to get it back. With a mid or rear engined car, there is a lot more momentum in the wiggly rear end. You're throwing the weight of the engine/trans back and forth. That's why you want to come in a smidge slower than a front-engined car and smoothly get on the power in the turn to keep the rear end firmly planted. Balancing traction between front and rear wheels matters more when the drivetrain weight is on the rear axle and steering is on the front axle.

So many in the comments saying this is not snap oversteer, it seems a lot of people have the wrong idea what snap oversteer is, and this is CLEARLY a text book example of snap oversteer. (Snap oversteer is when you loose grip in the rear and corrects it and it snaps back into place with such force and momentum that it sends you into often a 180 or 360 spin the other way).

That's because snap oversteer is caused by driver error. Snap oversteer happens when the rear tyres lose grip and slip out, causing the driver to countersteer, but then the rear tyres suddenly regain grip and launch the car the other way.

@christcarsandcountry6812
@christcarsandcountry6812 4 жыл бұрын
feral4mr2 It's not to hide mistakes - snap oversteer, by definition, is caused by mistakes. Those mistakes are especially easy to make in an MR2 because of the car's design. Snap oversteer is when the tail end begins to step out one direction, then as the driver countersteers and lays off the throttle. The tires find grip suddenly and the car will quickly pendulum the other direction. MR2 drivers commonly make this mistake since in a lightweight, lower-power, grippy mid engine car, it's easy to make these mistakes since it doesn't take as long for the tires to suddenly find grip as it would on an FR. Snap oversteer can occur in all drive systems, of course, but still. MR2s make it way easier.

It would, but it's a stupid idea. The light front end is THE reason why all serious performance cars are mid/rear engine. With the center of mass so far in the rear you can keep traction in corners for longer, the downside is just that when traction is eventually lost, it happens more sudden and quicker and you have to react more precisely (only lift throttle a little bit, stop the countersteer before the car is straight again).

It's super useful to go f*** around in your car and get a fuel for sliding it just in case it ever happens. Mr and full rear engine cars may work better to an extent but honestly it's not worth the trade off. Even my Mustang versus my mom's Corvette, the mustangs rear end is a tendency to slide out a little bit easier but if it does it's a lot more savable than on the Corvette. the Corvettes were in with the engine even being as far back as it is does not like to slide as much and can get real sketchy.

That isn't snap oversteer. The driver had his right foot pushed down too far as he was exiting the bend. Any rwd car with a lsd will do that.

The problem is morons trying to drive a mid-engined car the same way they do one w/the engine in the front. Owned an '85 for five years and a '91 for eleven. Never ONCE spun out.

It’s because he responded to the oversteer by braking instead of accelerating out of it, and he fishtailed into a spin.

Maybe not a great idea to drive a mid engine short wheel base MR2 if your driving skills are low..

In racing games I tune my cars for snap oversteer. It's how I drift. I only do it in AWD cars tho, so I can power through and keep going. That's how I hoon.

You should have slowed down immediately behind him rather than overtaking from the right HOPING for the best!

The vast majority of tracks are well wide enough that if a spin out happens on one side of a slow corner, it can generally be avoided.. that and it looked like a bunch of traffic was there. Slamming the anchors on could've easily ended in a pile crash behind!

there's no such thing. There is lift off overseer, snap only occurs when a driver doesn't return to center on time after a slide... as In this case. To add to the viciousness of the spin, he not only let off, but he also mashed the brakes. All big no nos.

That wasn’t snap oversteer, he got a normal oversteer and stayed on the gas pedal, over corrected it and went off track, no snap oversteer
@CaillouLP
@CaillouLP 4 жыл бұрын
That is literally what snap oversteer is - holding the countersteer for too long. Staying on the throttle is essential, otherwise you would just spin out further (lift-off oversteer).

Thats not snap oversteer, the rear stepped out and he over corrected causing it to spin
@a64738

This is a clear case of snap oversteer... (Hint snap oversteer is when you loose grip in the rear and corrects it and it snaps back into place with such force and momentum that it sends you into a 180 or 360 spin).

If he had hit me you would've definitely seen it in the video. He came incredibly close though as I saw him fly across the track in my rear view mirror. If I was going a bit slower he would've pretty much written off my car.

They're spectacular cars provided you can drive competently. The snap oversteer stereotype given to the MR2s is a result of the drivers treating them like FRs. Snap oversteer is more and less prominent from car to car, but every car is equally capable of not snapping provided the driver watches their countersteer.
