The 6th July 1957 has gone down in Beatles history as the day that John Lennon was introduced to Paul McCartney at St. Peter's Church Fete in Woolton, Liverpool.
Beatles historian and tour guide David Bedford takes you through the key moments of this important day, who did what, who said what, and how The Beatles nearly didn't happen! And it was all down to Ivan!
Paul McCartney watched John Lennon and the Quarrymen performing in the field at St. Peter's Church and being impressed, and yet confused, by what John was playing.
It was over in the Church Hall that Ivan Vaughan introduced Paul McCartney to John Lennon and through talking together that John told Paul about learning to play banjo chords from his mother, Julia.
By the end of the conversation/ introduction/ audition, John was convinced by Paul's prowess and a couple of weeks later, was invited to join The Quarrymen, and the rest, as they say, is history.
David Bedford is a Beatles historian and author of several books on The Beatles, including his worldwide most popular book, “Liddypool: Birthplace of The Beatles”.

My pleasure Ralph. My first book, "Liddypool", was the first to show any of the photos as Rod Davis only found them in late 2009. His father had taken the pics and Rod came across them when sorting through his dad's slides and photos. He allowed me to use one of the photos, which was a great honour. Seeing them all really helps paint the whole picture of the day. So glad you enjoyed it. David

Another great video, David… your videos and detail are wonderful. Love your channel. I’ve known about this for a long time, but this ls the most pictures I’ve seen on this event. Thanks. When you think of all the events that had to line up perfectly from Ivan, taking Paul to the church that day to the kid asking for my Bonnie at at Nems and all the little things in between… Really makes you think that there is a higher power. But also blows me away, John, playing with an out of tune guitar, only knowing banjo chords, and then six years later he’s on the Ed Sullivan show playing triplicates on all my loving. Wow!

This summer I was in Liverpool and by chance, had the opportunity to enter the Church Hall as a potential party giver was given a tour of the facility by St. Peter's Church staff. My taxi tour guide (clever fellow, but "hey, it's a job!") had no idea the Quarrymen had played in the field across the street in the afternoon of July 6, 1957, but he did know the Church Hall as the place where John met Paul. It had a great vibe. Parquet wood floor and great acoustics. We stood where the lads once played and were prodded to sing a Beatles song (fab guide, no slouch!). I chose I Saw Her Standing There, because it's the earliest Beatles song I could think of, but I was really thinking we should sing some skiffle or rockabilly to be more on point with what the Quarrymen probably played there. Very well told! I wish I'd known about you when I toured Liverpool! There's a limited number of creative collaborative duos (or trios or quads once you add in George and Ringo) in the history of the world, even in art. Most art is a solo exercise. Johannes Bach was dead six years before Mozart arrived on the scene, although we know Wolfgang did once meet Johannes' son. Beethoven once heard Mozart perform in 1787. But the three great pillars of classical music never made any music together. They are, in the Western cannon, so far as I can tell, the only comparable musical artists that would rival Lennon/McCartney/Harrison. There's a VERY LONG list of close artists, but there's only one Beatles. There's a lot of talent, but there's very little that's the VERY BEST. So it's fair to ponder and question how and where these two geniuses met and under what circumstance. Pure serendipity (a lucky roll of the cosmic dice), or some kind of intelligent design (planned lifetimes/foreordination, God''s gift to crumble communism), a cultural druidic toadstool (an genetic expression of an ancient cultural trait suppressed by the Romans), or a magical mystery tour? You've thought deeper into this than most. What do you think David?
@BrightmoonLiverpool
@BrightmoonLiverpool Жыл бұрын
Your guide didn't know they played in the field? That's not good! How they met is the greatest coincidence ever, with Ivan being that common link in such bizarre circumstances. Ivan, born on the same day as Paul, gets sent to a different school to John because "that Lennon" is such a distraction! Some things are meant to be. I was telling someone the other day that if you wrote the story of the Beatles as a work of fiction, nobody would believe it, because it is so unlikely to have happened that way that is is unbelievable! I have found the best way is to accept it as it is, be thankful it happened, and enjoy all those little coincidences and stories. Also makes you look at your own life and wonder about how many coincidences there are in your life too. Food for thought!

Thanks for this video. I grew up in Garston, and Speke in the 60’s. My grandparents lived on Reddington Road in Allerton. They would tell me that John and Paul we’re visiting the two boys next door during the week. They were the Norris brothers that they were supposedly friends with. I never found out if this was true. I was only about 8 years old or so, and of course I was mad about the Beatles! (My grandparents were probably pulling my leg!) I moved to America when I was 15. I still miss England but I am happy in the USA.

As Lennon told biographer Hunter Davies in 1968, “I’d been kingpin up to then. Now, I thought, if I take him on, what will happen? It went through my head that I’d have to to keep him in line if I let him join. But he was good, so he was worth having. He also looked like Elvis. I dug him.”

There’s a photo of the first Quarrymen gig two weeks before and many people think that Paul can be seen watching the Quarrymen play. Do you think it’s Paul? Also Paul was friends with George for 2 years before he met John I believe, they even hitchhiked together and played guitar 🎸

@@BrightmoonLiverpool wow. Thanks. In another 800 page Beatle’s book the author said that Paul had fabulously executed the F major chord in this song, so I thought OK that’s the key of C. The F chord is not that easy. And the F chord would be very hard to execute flawlessly using a right handed guitar, but playing it on the left hand. Doing a little more investigation I realize that this song is in the key of Amajor. so no F chord. So a lot easier to play John’s guitar left-handed doing that song. Why would that author have thought there was an F chord in that song?? Great to dig into this.

@@wileybucey1740 Sometimes, people try to read too much into what we actually know, and the story gets out of hand. But Paul was good at a few songs on the upside down guitar, as I interviewed the guy who taught Paul.

However, you add a whole other dimension to the information. I'm very very impressed. I'm a Yank and didn't know, for example, the intricate British legal aspects of the wording of Brian Epstein to Pete Best on that fateful day ( August 16,1962). I find all that very fascinating.
