Note : Paul didn’t have a guitar with him at the actual meeting…they were actually formally introduced between sets near a storage shed behind the church and Paul was invited to hang out with the band before the gig at the hall. It was here that Paul went into ‘show off’ mode and played a right-handed guitar and did his Little Richard routine, which impressed John no end 😁 (also note : they didn't do this gig on a truck - they were in a truck earlier in the day for the procession around Woolton village, but in the churchgrounds they played on a small makeshift stage)

In his tribute song to John, 'Here Today' Paul says, "What about the time we met, well I suppose that you could say that we were playing hard to get" This refers to the fact John didn't ask Paul to join the group right away. He was a bit intimidated by how good Paul was. And after all, John was the leader and the star and singer up to that point. So he waited a while and told his friend Pete Shotten and Ivan Vaughn to ask Paul to join. This was typical John. This way HE didn't have to do it face to face to avoid embarrassment if Paul said no. Paul played hard to get because when asked by Pete to join he told him he'd like to think on it for a bit. Both were playing hard to get even though Paul really wanted to join right away and John really wanted him right away, they both made each other wait. Another line in Paul's tribute song 'Here Today" to John, was "Remember the night we cried because there wasn't any reason left to keep it all inside". This was when they were both in a hotel room in a rain storm and got drunk and started telling each other how much they love each other. This never happened before. John got very drunk and started crying and so did Paul. It was the fact John and Paul were thinking about their mother's that had died very young in their lives. That was the bond between them. And that night they both let the pain out in tears. Very very unlike John and Paul to show that much emotion.

The most important day in music history Edit: shit the reply comments are mostly arguing so this was the most important day in music history which led the Beatles to become the biggest band to have ever been but the day was made possible because Elvis became so famous giving Paul and John a similar taste in music and Elvis was inspired by someone bla bla bla anyways we Arive at the first humans making grunting noises bla bla bla go back more time and we are at single celled organisms and a killer cell decides to spare the powerhouse of the cell go further back and the sun was created and we finally Arive at the big bang which was the most important day in music history. Stuff that I'm sure if true in this movie: That Paul could smell beer on John's breath when they met. That Paul knew the song John and the Quarrymen performed and that they got nearly all the music and lyrics wrong but still had something about them. That John and the rest of the Quarrymen were impressed at Paul's ability to play a right-handed guitar left handed. That Paul not only got every note and lyric right but also sung it in a flawless American accent. That Paul's dad thought John was a no good drop out and that John's Aunt Mimi wasn't too keen on having someone from council housing coming over

They portrayed this scenario pretty accurately. You could see the rest of the Quarry Men behind John basically crapping their pants. Paul was too good for them, so either John was going to quit and go with Paul, or the others would all eventually be fired. Oh to have been a fly on the wall in that room, that day, that moment. Quite possibly the most important moment of the entire 20th century.

The meeting of two members of a future band is the most important moment of the entire 20th century? There were two world wars in that century
@Wired4Life22 жыл бұрын
To be fair, though, this meeting was rather condensed for this film. Per Mark Lewisohn, Ivan and Paul actually hung out with The Quarry Men for much of the afternoon between the earlier daytime performance and their indoor evening performance. Most of the hangout was spent chatting about typical teen boy things. Paul's playing was merely a small segment of that hangout.

I see your point, but, I don't think that's necessarily what the filmakers were aiming for. People forget that John Lennon- bright and talented as he undoubtedly was- was also a bit of a mess: Lonely, insecure and frightened. That kind of stuff can make people behave in strange ways; and accounts from people who knew him show John could be very cutting- (even downright cruel) when he chose . Also, there's an element of (pardon the expression) peeing contest about this scene. It's two teenage boys circling round each other, sizing each other up. Plus, a part of the reason John's so snotty with Paul- apart from the age gap and that John went to grammar school (very acadamic, a place for kids who were meant to aspire to great things) and Paul went to technical school (a place for kids who were a bit less academically minded). So, John might have seen Paul- in the beginning at least- as a cheeky little so-and-so, and he felt the need to assert his superiority a bit. Not attractive, but very true to life.
@hellsjamfleas2 жыл бұрын
@@jadehamilton2819 I agree with your analysis. But I think you are mistaken, Paul went to the Liverpool Institute, the best grammar school in the area. John went to the lesser school, Mimi justified it by saying she was glad because it was closer.
