He is not really a great man, because he is the hardest worker and even now when they ask him, his answer is: I was like this and my family all people, I don't train, I don't do much etc etc. He doesn't even say what everybody admits that he takes freezing showers to help mentality, not just cryotherapies but overall voluntary exposure to cold through showers which are much harder and exactly before matches etc etc. To the contrary Djok has wrote book with many secrets although as he writes, I write some but not all since I have a career which is also honest. Nadal even openly says it doesn't really matter who has most when his actions show he considers it to matter whole lot. As coach Mouratoglou says: do not hear what they say but see what they do. A great man says at least half his secrets to help pact the environment and people with stuff he found, and then trusts that if he closes the gap by doing so, he will find new ways to still be ahead of the field.

By the way this is not a great run. Besides Medvedev's he did not face mature good players. And of course did not face the champion. It is similar to Feds Rolland Garros, hard to consider a full GS win. Like taking the belt in boxing without fighting the champion lol. It is still proof that he had returned to amazing physical shape, the best in the world, much better physical shape than the next gen.

I've long theorized that the back injury that Nadal suffered early in that 2014 Australian Open final against Stan Wawrinka lingered all year or at least flared on constantly throughout the season. He played so well leading up to the final and then the injury happened. I'm not saying he would have won the match, but we just don't know what a fully healthy Nadal would have done. But after that he just wasn't the same. People often talk about Nadal's bad spell as being 2015 and 2016 but 2014 is where it really started. It's just not mentioned because he made two grand slam finals and won one. But apart from those results, it wasn't a particularly good season. He won Rio and made it to the final of Miami but they were a couple of bright spots in an otherwise bad sea of results. I seem to remember him losing to Ferrer in straight sets in Monte Carlo, then lost in Barcelona to Almagro, beat Kei Nishikori in the Madrid final more because of an injury Kei suffered (which resulted in Kei retiring from the match) than Nadal's level of play (he was clearly getting outplayed), and lost a 3 setter to Djokovic in Rome after winning the first set. The fact is that Nadal went into Roland Garros playing at his worst level than at any point in his career up to that point. He was just off constantly. I wouldn't be surprised to learn after Nadal retires and publishes his second autobiography (to chronicle the second half of his career) that we learn he more-or-less gutted through the clay season with injections and painkillers. Even at the tail end of that Roland Garros final he just looked like his back was starting to act up, as though the painkillers or injections were wearing off. I believe he basically put everything on the line to win this title and it may have cost him the rest of the season to do so. And I believe it lingered into 2015 as well. It's why Nadal looked so lost that season. I don't think he was fully health and able to train properly, so he lacked confidence in his game. He may have been in a decent amount of pain as well all season. This isn't meant to take away anything from Djokovic's or any other player's wins, but anyone who believes Nadal was fully healthy that year is wrong. He was a pale shadow of himself. He won just one title that year and it was at the Mercedes Open on grass of all surfaces. Otherwise he was losing to guys he'd normally beat before leaving the locker room, or guys like Berdych who could never seem to win against him. Of course it's not all about some injuries like his back and wrist, Nadal also had some serious issues with serving patterns, and general patterns of play. He'd become predictable in some aspects of his game and opponents were catching on, combined with increased confidence in their ability to simply out play him. It's why Carlos Moya coming on board and changing things up in his preparation and strategy has been so effective.
@davidcoulter1058
@davidcoulter1058 2 жыл бұрын
If I understand correctly he changed his racquet at the start of 2015, and persisted with it throughout the year even though results were poor; that probably had an impact as well. It's hard to say for sure if your theory is true, but I can say that given he had never lost a set to Stan in 13 previous meetings he was a strong favourite in that final without the injury for sure. At the end of 2016 I felt like he might be done at the top level. The fact that we've since had nine slam finals, winning seven of them including that elusive second Aussie title, and two year-end number one finishes just amazes me. I would love to see another Wimbledon title but that seems to be very hard now.
@TennisLover82
@TennisLover82 2 жыл бұрын
@@davidcoulter1058 I forgot about the racquet change. I'm sure that didn't help. I remember that he went to the locker room shortly into the first set and was gone for like 10-15 minutes and Stan was angry about it. They reported that he asked for some painkillers and that it had been a back issue that flared up during the warmup. Remember that Stan had just gone 5 sets against Djokovic just to make it to the final, while Nadal took out Federer in straight sets and was heavily favored. And I felt the same way after 2016. Things just looked very bleak. I know he didn't have much confidence out there and his forehand was very shaky. I think Moya coming on board was the best thing that could have happened. They altered Nadal's practices. They stopped the 2+ hour sessions to an hour or less, started making the forehand the lethal shot it was again and changing up his patterns of play. Rafa really should have a minimum of 3 AO titles. I still wince when I think of the easy passing shot at 4-3 in the fifth set in 2012 that would have made it 5-3 and probably would have gotten him that title. But getting this second one is great. And like you, I would love to see a third Wimbledon.
@DecayUNCUT
@DecayUNCUT 2 жыл бұрын
First off, it's nice to read a well thought out statement. Secondly, I agree with you. These statements you made would have been null and void if we hadn't witnessed Nadal make a come back in 2017. Thank goodness he wasn't ready for the next phase of his life just yet. He will be 36 in just a couple of months. He has 21 slams. I predict he will have 22 at the end of his career. I don't know if he will end up with the most. I hope so.
@TennisLover82
@TennisLover82 2 жыл бұрын
@@DecayUNCUT It's going to be interesting to see what happens this season and how his foot reacts to a full year of punishment. It's why Rafa needs to be very careful in how he schedules his tournaments. If he goes into Roland Garros healthy and playing really well, I believe there is a really good chance he gets that 14th title and 22 overall GS. After that it is hard to say. If he can manage the foot and continue to play well, I still feel like he could play another year or two before calling it a career. He might find a way to sneak in another hard court slam. Maybe a fifth U.S. Open if things break right. I could also seem him nab a 15th RG title next year and that might be his last. But we are now getting into speculation here. However, I will say that a healthy Nadal playing well over the rest of this season and next season should net him a minimum of one more GS and maybe as many as 3 if things pan out the right way. He could finish with 24, though I would be ecstatic if he got to 25 and managed to be the all-time leader.

Haha lol. He hadn't lost a set not even closely before losing to Djok. And by the way hardly won in 2011 and almost lost 2013 actually could have lost if not for the net issue. And we know before 2011-2010 Djok was still finding ways with nutrition and exercise to manage gluten, digestion, and asthma issues And anyways Nadal plays lefty against backhands which is in a way cheating since he is right handed, and Its just way to play in different competition against th e other right handed players. It is analysed in tennis that left handed players have advantage in the sport, but a naturally left handed, that is all he can do, but for a right handed player to do is a choice that shows he just wants to use advantage and not play in face to face competition. But that is still ok, but hiding his practice and saying everyone that he is not preparing very much or what he does that is not manly.

djokovic may end with the most grand slams but that nadal managed to get to 21 and is still out there winning today is insane. it’s insane for ANY players to still be at that level at 36, but particularly for a player who was known for playing extremely physical and grinding tennis his whole career with a multitude of injuries. i remember commentators even early on saying there’s no way he’d play past 25-26 cuz his body would give out. and every time he was out for 3-6 months you’d start seeing people write him off, but he’s always proven them wrong! admittedly, after the terrible 2015-2016 seasons even i thought he was done, but what he’s done since 2017 is truly remarkable given his injuries!

Well, 2010 was maybe his greatest year ever, winning 3 GS on three different surfaces. Won us open in september. Yet, in 2011, in his still 100% fitness, played 6 matches against Djokovic, all finals, and lost all of them (7th match loss going over to 2012 AO final). Losing 6 matches in full fitness just a few months after having won his 3rd grand slam in a row, sounds quite beatable to me lol. If anyone was unbeatable, it was Djokovic in 2011. 43 match win streak which Nadal or Fed has never been close to. He played Nadal and Fed 11 times, won 10 of those. Had a 70-6 win-loss record. Though, his 2015 season was even better, and probably the greatest tennis season ever

Nadal has so much topspin that his shots often are at risk of falling short like that. At the start of his career, it was difficult for players to capitalize on the short balls because of the topspin, but eventually that wasn't the case anymore. At his best though, he hits the balls deep. Funny how most of tennis comes down to which player is hitting the ball deep and/or away from the opponent.

Nadal is the best, bone degenerative disease hurts, I know only too well, it’s amazing what he’s achieved n at the level he has with this disease, I’m baffled considering how much this restricts a normal person with the disease, the amount of injuries from a slight move the wrong way n your in trouble, I don’t know how he does it, god only knows n has blessed him to be able to work through it n obviously must have some of his own tips to manage the situation, mine appeared in my late teens then my other foot n I’ve had to tweak the way I move my feet n I’m still scared of breaks though I’ve had a few fractures before I knew so much about it, obviously staying fit helps n some situations are worse than others, but again I’m astonished how he hasn’t let it ruin his career, cos it can literally ruin your day to day life

Rafa fan since 2005 . Hated Novak for almost as long but after all these years I believe they are co- goats. On any given day they can crush the other. Everyone must concede though that there never has been and never will be a greater clay courter than Rafa. Losing 3 times in 18 years in 5 set clay court matches is hard to comprehend. And his French open record of 105-3 I mean cmon. Novak has the best of Nadal in Paris and his record is 2-7. 4 tournaments with 10 or more wins. And 62-8 in finals ? Nothing comparable in sport. And he’s a class act as well. Even with all that I consider Novak his equal or co- goat. Valid opinion for both looking at the record books. Novak have the best court awareness amongst every tennis player in the history. That skill alone counters almost every opponent's shot against him. His only weakness is probably his mentality (well he's a human after all). Overall, his tennis is the closest thing to a perfection. Nadal in the other hand, is simply a warrior. His playstyle demands lot of physical toughness. That is why he always getting injured throughout his career. But his mental strength is probably the best in the business.
