Smallville is undoubtedly one of the best iterations of the Superman mythos and origin story.
Superboy, who?
The CW show gave us some of the best interpretations and portrayals of classic Superman characters.
Superman
Lex Luthor
Green Arrow
The Flash
Metallo
Doomsday
Darkseid
Bizarro
Just some of the many names that were portrayed on the show perfectly.
But it wasn't all sunshines and rainbows --- it was usually kryptonite and meteor showers.
Here to talk about the worst moments of Smallville --- from Lex Luthor clones to Tom actually never wearing that Superman suit.

Live action Lex? Rosenbaum is best, hands down. But the voice... animated Lex always wins out because of that. Now if we could get Rosenbaum's portrayal and general look, with Clancy Brown (the voice actor from the DCAU) doing the voice? THAT would be amazing!

I always found it kind of unsettling how smallville is supposedly a small, rural town, yet every episode, at least one person dies and no one seems to care or remember. It makes sense in Supernatural because they travel all over the country, but you would think that many deaths in one area would raise some red flags to its remaining citizens.

The show outgrew it’s original premise honestly. Like even calling it “ Smallville” didn’t really make sense in later seasons because we spend very little time there and it was not really about the town anymore. Also having Clark face off with and defeat Lex, Brainiac, Zod, Bizarro, Doomsday, freaking Darkseid, etc all BEFORE he put on the costume or officially became Superman, and the JLA being formed as well, was a weird choice as well.

Honestly it felt like as Clark grew and became more like Superman, the dc universe grew and expanded as well. It felt like the silver age comics where Superboy met Lex, GA, Batman, Lois and other heroes and villains before he became Superman. It works in the canon it is creating and universe it built up.
@michealmahmoud6391
@michealmahmoud6391 2 жыл бұрын
@Will N it’s an elseworld. Also Smallville usually took elements from whatever was in continuity at the time to build their own Superman universe (President Lex in the early runs being put as Lex definitive future, Clark at first being more like Post Crisis Clark but after a while ended up taking a more Christopher Reeve/Post Infinite Crisis like personality, taking LOSH and JSA from Geoff John’s current run, season 9 being similar to the New Krypton arc that was out at the time, Bart being the Flash mainly bc they couldn’t use Barry and Wally but OYL made Bart the Flash, Green Arrow being a killer and having a public identity around the same time Rise and Fall of Green Arrow/Arsenal came out). Not to mention movies like Superman Returns, Iron Man, Watchmen and the original Superman movies. Superman continuity has been consistently changing details but Smallville mixed and merged to create its own universe. Smallville didn’t exist in a bubble but was influenced by so many different sources. It was like if Donner Superman had a mix of silver age, post crisis and DCAU but in a post 9/11 world. I’m not going to act like Doomsday was perfect but it fit in the context of the show same with each of the other people he encounter that forced Clark to reconsider his own worldview and forced him to become a more proactive hero. And it also introduced characters as probably potential introductions before their live action counterparts in future movies or tv shows. But it showed the importance of Clark and how influential he was to other heroes in a way no other show or movie could do as well. Clark set a shining example and proved through his actions why he is world’s greatest hero, he doesn’t necessarily have to be the first but when he did go public it changed everything for heroes.

I personally loved the chemistry between Tom's Clark Kent and Erica's Lois Lane. They started off as bickering friends, and gradually grew to be a couple. And I think that's why it works. They start off as friends. Clark seems to be at his most comfortable when he's with Lois. He's snarkier, more outspoken, he smiles a lot and has a good time when he's with her. I actually buy them as a couple once they get to that point. Tom and Erica are the definitive Clark and Lois for me, as both for characters AND as a couple. Overall, I absolutely love this show. From beginning to end. It may get frustrating at times, but I always have a good time rewatching this show.

I agree. I don't understand how some people think there was no chemistry between them. There was alot from the get go. Maybe it's because the show dragged out the will they/won't they with Lana too long and didn't really have her and Clark break up but rather forced apart. Either way, Clark and Lois in Smallville reminded of them in the DCAU where Lois is attracted to Clark, but in denial.

Jor-El's extremely questionable demands and actions led to Clark making understandable, but very costly decisions. “Smallville” died when the writers kept Lana Lang on the show, after Season 5. There was no reason for all that relationship drama, considering Lana was the reason Clark’s father died. Then add that Lois Lane was a permanent cast member, at that point. Lois brought out the fun and snarky side of Clark. The best romances are when the couple are both lovers and best friends. The friendship between Clark Kent and Lex Luthor was the heart and soul of “Smallville”. Michael Rosenbaum is, and will always be, the greatest Lex Luthor. No one can even come close.

I think you did a really good job with this essay, even though I don't completely agree on every point. Personally, I preferred the relationship that eventually developed between Lois and Clark because to me it felt a bit more earned. Clark was pretty much hopelessly in love with Lana right from the very first episode, whereas with Lois, they kinda start out disliking each other (or at least somewhat annoyed by one another). Over time they became friends while they still dated other people. It was only after really spending a lot of time involved in each other's lives and getting to know each other that they finally started dating and then became a romantic couple. That progression just held a lot more appeal for me. The pairing of Chloe and Oliver in comparison felt like a billion times more forced, especially since she had previously demonstrated such wonderful chemistry with Jimmy Olsen. I always felt that the killing off of his character at the end of the eighth season was the worst move by the writers in the entire series. Aaron Ashmore brought this fresh, goofy charm to practically every scene he was in. Heck, there were even a couple of episodes where he was practically the main character. I was really hoping to see him continue his friendship with Clark, becoming part of the small group who knew about his secret identity.

I personally think Erica Durance's Lois Lane saved the show... By the end of Season 3 it was getting a little repetitive and honestly it seems like the show was running out of ideas because what more could they possibly explore if Clark was already mastering his powers, knowing about his past and pursuing Lana? Lois brought out a completely new side of Clark, not only by showing a more fun and witty part of his personality but by allowing Smallville to go on for as long as it did through exploring his life as a journalist on the Daily Planet and living in Metropolis. There were definitely ups and downs and quite a few plotholes in the show, and I do acknowledge that by the end of the 10th season the show was very different than it was in season 1. But I honestly think that by making Clark step out of his comfort zone, the show was able to be a true Superman origin story from start to finish and Lois was a great part of why it's one of my favorite shows of all time (plus I think that her and Clark's relationship was ultimately much healthier for the show than his with Lana which was a more immature "first love" type of thing, whereas Lois is who actually allowed Clark to grow up and become a superhero)

The reason I liked Smallville was it was not unlike the Man of Steel or Birthright comics. It took the story we knew and added new elements and spun it differently. I loved the whole debate about choice versus destiny, and in the end it really is both, with both Clark and Lex. They are destined to be those men, but they make choices that definitively send them down their respective paths. It's positively heisenbergian and I enjoyed that. I also like that they put some serious thought into the Superman mythos and added some things and altered others to make it work better. I liked the idea that Jor-El didn't just randomly send his son to Earth. Rather, when he was young and visited Earth as a rite of passage (something that had happened with his people before) he got in trouble in Smallville and Hiram Kent helped him get out of it. When he left Hiram told him to stop by if he ever made his way back there and Jor-El told him he would remember that. So Kal-El was sent to Earth and specifically to Kansas because Jor-El had friends there who he trusted. That's just more intellectually satisfying because it makes more sense. I like the fact that the House of El symbol is based on a series of symbols in written Kryptonian and even before we see the classic shield we see similar motifs. Smallville's biggest problem, in my mind, was it was held back by the fact that it was a WB/CW show and was specifically made as a night time teen drama. That was their biggest problem because it took away from the rise of Superman story and turned it into a teen soap opera along the lines of Dawson's Creek or Everwood. That's why even though the show suffered massively from the departure of Lex (Michael Rosenbaum) and Lana (Kristen Kreuk) it did get a better in a lot of ways because they stopped having so much of the angsty teen drama crap and instead focused on Superman stuff. My favorite moments were always when he was hanging out with the other superheroes, because their interactions always felt very real and well executed.

Another continuity slip was characters or locations that didn’t appear when you’d expect them to. Chloe’s father appeared rarely and there had to be a line to explain why he wasn’t at her wedding (the one Doomsday crashed). Lana’s bio father was another vanishing parent figure, ditto for Lana’s aunt Nell. Pete left end of season three iirc and didn’t get a a single mention until his guest appearance in season seven. Lucas Luthor only existed at all for a single episode, never to be seen or heard of again. For locations, the Talon coffee shop set was retired long before the Talon apartment got blown up (and it’s not the best entrance for the apartment, up a staircase right in the middle of a public place). We don’t even know who ran it after Martha.

Erica Durance elevated the show imo. She had great chemistry with Welling and the cultivation of their relationship was a more realistic take compared to traditional Hollywood/TV relationships. Clark and Lana were toxic. Their interest in each other came from a place of deep insecurity and mistrust. I don't think Clark ever loved Lana but was more infatuated with her. The same goes for Lana towards Clark. Clark was the super good-looking nice guy who at first simped over her. Lois, however, was a more emotionally stronger and entertaining character. She had a report with Clark that could sustain a lifetime, unlike the fickle fleeting infatuation sentiment so tiredly conveyed with Lana. This is made clear when Clark, in less time was able to let Lois know his romantic intentions towards her and his serious pursuit of her affection. Lois' incling and eventual learning the truth about Clark was also less selfish and more supportive, whereas with Lana it was the opposite. Still, a great show that had some amazing writing (not always) and some of the best life lessons you could learn from the likes of Jonathan Kent and surprisingly even moreso from Lionel and Lex.

I feel the show shouldn't have lasted longer than five seasons. Clark could have gotten with Lana in Season 3 and then they break up in Season 4. Then he leaves Smallville at the end of Season 4 to train with Jor-El. Season 5 could have been a short season where we see him honing his powers and saving people around the world, ending in him becoming Superman in the series Finale.

I feel that the show should have either split itself into two parts or different shows. Have Clark and Lana end up together at the end of Smallville then do a Time skip for the second Show called Metropolis that has a heartbroken Clark Kent leave Smallville due to something happening with Lana and introduce Lois. This could have at least fixed what I feel many issues of the show eventually became. The Chemistry between Welling and Kreuk was just too good as well as the love story they were telling between Lana and Clark to believable I feel at times. I stopped watching the show the minute Lex and Lana left. This was the heart and soul of the show. I was never sold on the Lois being his love interest in the show and that she was only a second choice. Also, Lois is what you would call an intrusive character overall in the plot all of sudden. Since she was introduced so early, they had to force her into some really stupid plot points just so she could remain close to Clark. She can't get into college force her to go to high school for a little while. She fails at college, force her to work at the Talon, then all of sudden someone with no experience I know lets make her a campaign manager. Also once Lois introduced this removed whatever investment people may have had with Lana and you can see the fanbase usually split with Lana vs Lois as well.

Right? Lois never fit the show as anything but comedic relief or as a nuisance. Lana was integral to the show and to Clark's development. Not only was she the love of Clark's life, but she was also a deeply emotionally motivated character with a long, traumatic history. In a thematic sense, she fit the Hero Vs. Villain narrative as the innocent caught between them. The show clearly paints our future "Superman" as a Savior and Lex is becoming the devil and gives Lana a choice between light and dark. That makes Lana our "Eve" which sets her up for a really cool redemption story.

Smallville, very much like Gotham is an alternate take where the villains essentially appear before the hero becomes the iconic figure he’s meant to be. I love these unique takes because it didn’t play it “safe” and anything can happen. Much like movies, the shows aren’t straight up adaptations and allow room for new creative decisions to keep it fresh and exciting. I think Smallville captured the heart of Superman better than a lot of mediums did and we didn’t even need to see him in the cape. Tom Welling was excellent as Clark Kent and the writing supported him because it understood Clark Kent. Also Michael rosenbaum as Lex Luthor is without a doubt the stand out of the show. They gave him almost a Michael Corleone-esque Shakespearean tragedy to his character arc. An anti-hero with a number of redeeming qualities until he becomes THE villain.

@@rashb3994 And with Margot Kidder's Lois, who did not recognize Superman unless he took down his glasses, you didnt wonder why strongest man in the world or anyone in the world for that matter, would love her? :D I mean, she wasnt really smart, was she? And imho she wasnt even pretty. I think Amy Adams had some "gutsy punchy" lines in Man of Steel (remember for example that one about measuring dicks?) and she found out about Clark identity with her investigation without seeing him more than once. Meanwhile Margot... well we both now, how that was portrayed. I think cheesy could be the right word for it. @@Ryan_Wayne Lois and the rest of the world not getting past the glasses thing is part of Superman lore. It was pulled off better with Kidder because she saw Clark as a charity case, so him being Superman was unbelievable to her. That's what makes it great.. I actually love Snyder verse but he's not great with those little small details. There's a reason why the Richard Donner first Superman is still considered the best one. You see why Superman falls in love with Kidder's version of Lois because they're polar opposites. He's a quiet humble smalltown guy, and she's rah rah, bold, fearless and sassy. Again I agree on Amy Adams presenting more of a silent strength and fearlessness but then she goes into emo mode when he's gone. Totally goes against the character. Also because they're both blah in Snyder verse their romance is hardly believeable. It's like friendzonish. Lol @ she's not even pretty. Man, don't let the feminist here you say that 😂. But yeah sure most of the Lois's are cuter. You get one point for that and yes Amy is a way better actress probably then all of them. I guess I don't have a problem with AA, I just wished they unleashed her full blown sass capabilities.

@Ryan_Wayne 2 жыл бұрын
@@rashb3994 I guess I get your point of view with that polar opposites theory. The thing is that I just didnt really buy it in those movies, same way as I didnt buy it with Clark and Lois in Smallville, where they were portrayed similarily as opposites and it still felt "friendzonish" to me. What you are saying might make sense on paper to me, but watching those movies, Cavill & Adams always felt to me more believeable as a couple than Reeve & Kidder. And I could say the same thing about Clana vs Clois in Smallville btw. Well Donner's Superman might be considered as the best, however that's another thing I dont agree with. And I'm not arguing which one is considered best, I'm just saying the Snyder movies and Cavill/Adams portrayals of those characters are the best ones for me. What you are saying about Lois seeing him as charity case, well its true obviously, but to me its another thing I kind of have a problem with. Clark is a loser in her eyes and once she discovers he is superhero, she is big time in love with him, how romantic.. I mean I know its a clasic story where she was kind of in love with Superman from the beginning, its not like I would hate that movie(s) for that, but I definitely prefer the story where Lois develops some kind of relationship with Clark on human level before he is Superman and the suit in the end doesnt matter. And it was portrayed that way in Man of Steel, even though the romance maybe could use a little more build up.

Clark and Lois, when you look carefully, there was an attraction. The banter between them was natural. They got closer and in time independed on each other. @@Niacaraboo You couldn't be more wrong if you tried... I have a long list of scenes that prove Lana and Clark were a far better love story than Lois and Clark.. Lois never cares about Clark, she thought of Clark as a dork for 4 seasons and never suspected him to be anyone worthwhile. Lois is completely surprised when Clark turns out to be the Blur. Lois cared about Oliver and when she suspected he was Green arrow she did everything to find out his secrets. Lois never supports Clarks whereas Lana was there for him so many times... the list with scenes and episodes is below... In Season 3 Ep 4 After the commando Anti-meteor vigilante tells Lana he k!lled Clark.. Lana attacks him and then instead of saving herself she risks her life to report the attack on Clark to the cops. Lois never risked her life for Clark even once. In S05E13, After Clark's father's watch is stolen Lana goes to all Metropolis pawn shops and finds the watch, despite the fact that she was upset at Clark for keeping secrets from her. Jonathan's death is one of the most difficult times for Clark but Lois is never once seen consoling Clark. What kind of friend is that? This despite how much the Kent' had supported Lois during her time in Smallville. In Season 1 and 2 there are dozens of scenes where Clark and Lana support each other throughout their emotional struggles. In Season 2 Episode 11 Lana says she doesn't care about Clark's secrets. In season 2 Episode 21 Lana initiates relationship with Clark despite knowing he is not being honest with her. It is Clark that pushes her away throughout because of his fears of hurting... Lana is always there for him. The real truth is Clark never cared for Lois anywhere near as much as he cared for Lana. Clark never shows as much fear for Lois safety and welbeing as he does for Lana's welbeing. Lana says in Season 5 episode 3 after Clark was shot and was lying in hospital unconscious that from the first moment she saw him she knew Noone could make her as happy as he could but she also knew that he would always be running around trying to help others, and that this day (aka the day he is dying in hospital) would come and it was what made her pull away. In short, Lana loved Clark and Clark loved Lana from the first moment they saw each other. Further more, In Season 1 episode 19 seeing Chloe and Clark become closer Lana decides to break up with Whitney but doesn't because Whitney's father dies in that episode. In season 1 episode 10 Clark and Lana nearly kiss but Clark decides not to go for it because he knows Whitney's father is ill and kissing would hurt Lana later. Only reason Lana doesn't break up with Whitney in season 1-2 is because of his father's illness, later his death and Whitney going to war. In Season 3 she does everything she can to make things work with Clark after he runs off and only gives up after she is literally brainwashed by magent boy in season 3 episode 7. Despite being brainwashed her love for Clark only slightly reduces, and she tells Clark she won't wait for him forever. In Season 4 Finale, Lana eventually confesses her Love to Clark again and freely gives the Element key to Clark. She denied the element to both Jason and Lex. S04 Episode 19 where Clark loses his memory and falls for Lana with just one look, and S04 E21 where Clark and Lana find and raise a baby together are also examples of their love for each other. In S05 Clark breaks her heart because he couldn't continue hurting her by lying to her about his powers and inability to be physically intimate with her... And she goes into a tailspin of depression which almost results in her death S05 episode 17. Lex then takes advantage of her extreme emotional vulnerability to manipulate her into sex and later convinces her marry with false pregnancy. She only marries Lex because Lionel threatens to murder Clarke if she doesn't do it. Lana dies, get tortured, enters into a false marriage, absorbs Kryptonite all to protect Clark. The sacrifices she makes for Clark are so many and so large that Lois can't hold a Candle to them... Also Lana despite everything never disrespects Clark which Lois continuously treats him like an immature boy for 4 years. Lois sees Clark fully nude in Season 04, but shows almost no s€xual interest in Clark till Season 8. Lana befriended and fell in love with the boy next door and vice versa... They were both orphans, both came from the same background and had a lot in common. Lois's love for Clark has no basis, she thinks he is a dork, their love is just something written into the script to make comic book fans happy. Lois first comes to smallville she hat€s Smallville because it's a boring small town. But then she just keeps coming back why? It's written in the script that is why... Lois is supposed to be an Army brat raised by an hororable general but from the moment she comes she behaves more like a spoiled brat. At first she imposes herself on the Kents and abus€s their hospitality without doing anything in return for them. Even Lex was a better house guest that Lois. Also Lois's alleged closeness with Chloe never makes it on to screen and is never explained. Chloe lived her entire childhood in Smallville, Lois never even came to smallville before Season 4 so how were they so close? Chloe has more sisterly scenes with Lana than Lois. Lois is a badly written character in Smallville first she hat€s Smallville then she can't get enough of Smallville. First she thinks that Clark aka the extremely handsome guy who is over 6 ft tall and has a 6 pack is a "los€r". Any number of comments where she puts down Clark to other Characters across multiple seasons is proof, this only changes in later seasons. Clark also is not physically attracted to Lois unlike his electric biological and even generational attraction to Lana. Remember Jor-El had an affair with Lana's great Aunt not Lois's great aunt. I am not saying Lois and Clark can't hook up but it's at best a mild attraction. They have very little in common, they are not physically attracted to each other much. Like I said before, Lois and Clark is more like a boring accountant romance. Lois and Clark is a relationship of convinience which is real life would either lead to an unhappy sexless marriage or a break up... Lana and Clark are true soulmates, they are torn apart by circumstances beyond their control not each other.

Ok so I actually don't agree on some things you said, like when you mentioned how Jonathan often comes back after his death, he literally shows up in 3 episodes, the first and last 2 of season 10. And no, I'm not counting when Brainiac pretended to be Jonathan, because that wasn't Jonathan. Anyway, let's talk about Lois and Lana as Clark's partners. I don't deny that Clark and Lana had chemistry, I mean, I even liked them together. Actually, they never were boring to me: I watched the show last month for the first time, and I don't know, might be because I was expecting the "will they won't they" dynamic, or maybe because I was binging the show and I was so invested in the story and the characters that I didn't stop thinking if I liked what I was watching, but really, but I never felt bored watching them together and I always felt they had chemistry. Still, I prefer Lois and Clark. I disagree on the fact that they didn't have romantic or sexual chemistry, it was always there, since season 4, underneath all the things they said and the way they talked to each other. Speaking of which, I think there's one thing I rarely see people mention in comments or videos I've seen and read, which is: Lois and Clark TALKED to each other. Yes, Clark and Lana had chemistry, but their chemistry consisted, for the most part, in looking at each other and staring at each other, which was still fine because as a spectator you believed their looks were looks of people in love with each other. But when did Lana and Clark had a normal conversation, talking about, I don't know, a common passion? Lois and Clark were both reporters, they had that as a common passion, and we saw that side of their relationship. What did Clark and Lana had? Riding horses? Also, Lana might have been the right person for Clark before she decided to be with Lex, because then, the person that she became, she wasn't the right person for him anymore. And I wish Clark understood that and decided to end their relationship because of that, instead of because they were physically forced too, but you can't be always happy, can you? Anyway, just think about the way Lana and Lois acted with Clark, especially after they learned his secret. Lana, before, loved him and respected him, but then she felt the need to gain powers herself in order to feel "equal" to him, because in her eyes Clark was this perfect, flawless man. Lois, on the other hand, never idealized Clark, she always saw the human, full of flaws, side of him, even after she found out the truth, and she fell in love with that side, first. Lois made Clark more human. And this is the reason I like them A LOT more as a couple, they just make each other whole

My biggest problem wasnt so much that the Kents were handpicked by Jor El to raise Clark. My problem was that there was a easy portal between Krypton and Earth that was active even after the knowledge of Krypton's destruction was known. In one episode it is revealed that Lara popped through with Kara one Sunday morning to check out the house where her son would be raised. Why did they even bother with the dangerous and lengthy spaceship journey when the entire El family could have popped through, survived, and raised Clark themselves?

While I agree Smallville stopped being Smallville about midway thru season 6 once Chloe got powers and Lex and Lana got married, seasons 8 thru 10 should have been called Metropolis. And the digital comic Smallville season 11 was actually pretty good. We get to see more of the Mythology and get introduced to Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern.

The final nail in the coffin of this show takes place years later during a crossover episode with shows like the flash where they see Tom's Clark just chopping wood with an axe and said he gave up his powers permanently. Like Tom never wanted to play Superman and said it felt boring. Him giving up his powers was like the biggest slap in the face especially when the music of smallville played as they traveled to that earth to meet that superman. Like us fans got excited and then were hugely disappointed and let down.

Smallville was one of those shows I grew with and watched on TV with my folks. I also was and still am a big Superman fan. It was cool seeing them bring in the comic villains bizarro, doomsday, zod, branniac, even though I felt like the inclusion of Doomsday was a bit confusing as to why. Of course Lex, I was always in the camp of a Lana and Clark relationship, vs Clark and Lois (at least the Smallville show anyway).

9:24 Nah Vee. Clark and Lana's whole relationship sucked. There was no love there just teenage lust. Didn't help that Lana was an annoying Mary Sue the show tried to make people believe was some flawless angel when she was a self righteous hypocrite who said she hated secrets and lies only to keep secrets and tell lies herself, when other characters did wrong the show acknowledged it but Lana was treated like she could do no wrong. Even when she was with other guys she'd get jealous of Clark with other women.

The day Smallville died? So... the series finale? Or are you talking about that cameo in "Crisis on Infinite Earths"? THAT could very well be considered "the day Smallville died" I know it was for me. However... I agree with pretty much everything that you said. Especially the part where you talked about Supes running through his entire rouges gallery before he was even Supes... particularly Doomsday. That was stupid... but I will admit to having enjoyed the episode. In fact, I don't think there was ever even one episode of Smallville that I didn't like. And Erica is fucking adorable. But they had more chemistry as married parents in a 5 minute CW cameo than they had during the entire original series' run. And Supernatural rules... you should do a video on the *GEM* of a fucking show! Edit: That's not a small gripe, to me. They should have started calling it "Metropolis" after a certain point... like, maybe open season 6 or 7 under the title "Metropolis". That could've worked.

I love Smallville. I agree that the writers wrote themselves into corners a lot. The biggest complaint I had was the Clark/Lana/Lois issues. It seemed to me that they did too good of a job showing us how much Lana was the girl for Clark that they didn't know how to, or just couldn't cleanly move the audience away from that. I am someone who didn't grow up reading the comics or watching the movies so it would have been fine with me if Clark and Lana needed up together, but I know that would not have gone over well with those who really cared about the mythology.

Same foes, but different universe- so much that he used blue/gold kryptonite on himself married Lois, had kids and no longer had his powers - he lived the rest of his life and obtained what he truly wanted. Even Lex had his entire childhood/memories/evilness wiped out at the end of the season where he became a president, even Clark wasn’t stressing about. I grew up on this show, lasted me pre military all the way to the end when it stopped airing I got out lol, so it was fun having it side by side and could always look forward to next season. Actually, Gotham has the same issue, having Bruce Wayne going up against most of his rogue's gallery before he even becomes Batman. The main problem with Smallville was its structure and inability to know what characters and stories were relevant, and which ones had outlived their usefulness, and which ones just didn't fit. This was never more true than with the character of Lana Lang, who was only relevant in the show's first four seasons during Clark's high school years, but was simply no longer relevant or necessary by season 5 as she didn't fit into Clark's post-high school and pre-Superman storyline the way that Chloe Sullivan and Lois Lane did. The show also went way overboard with the "meteor freak" storylines, similar to how The Flash overused the metahumans created by the STAR Labs particle accelerator explosion. But Smallville was also hampered by studio interference, as Smallville was intended to be a sister show to a series about teenage Bruce Wayne, similar to Gotham, with the two shows crossing over with each other. But Warner Bros. kept restricting Smallville from using certain characters to avoid their film division having to compete with a television show, which is why Bruce Wayne wasn't allowed on Smallville, and didn't get his own show until Gotham premiered on the Fox Network three years after Smallville ended, and why Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, and other characters weren't allowed on Smallville.

I was a big fan of the show but I liked the earlier seasons. Perhaps because of constraints and different sets of showrunners they had some bad adaptions of characters and Im surprised at the nostalgia romantiscim of it. I think Lana caught a bit too much hate but they were basically tying her to a redundant storyline with Clark rather than moving her to a plountonic relationship which maybe they didnt cause Chloe occupied that space (I did think Lana was interesting in seasons 6-8 in retrospect) And I agree that while Lois was great and the best interation, the shippers and show also kinda kinda forced it with them too but thats still a CW show being a CW Show. Its a show that had a lot of identity crisis trying to please different audiences (Teens, nerds etc) and being the first of its kind. But Im glad your video highlighted that the show did not have its problems because of one character but everything.

Clark and Lana were crushes, but Clark and Lois were best friends and that’s why they work better for eachother for long term growth. Watch Clark with Lois: it’s the only time he laughs with a girl, then he develops a sense of humour later on (fake sneezing on Chloe’s desk, sass back to Lois). Clark developed a backbone after living with Lois in highschool! He started having that back and forth sass with Lois which is entirely the most honest firm of youth flirting!! Lana and Clark added nothing to eachother, in fact Lana and Clark spent their time walking on eggshells around eachother and having a LOT of drama.. they felt overgrown like when you try to get back with an ex and worry about everything. Clark helps Lois open up and gives her someone to talk to, Lois challenges Clark’s passivity and naivety in his actions he thinks are correct like keeping his secret from someone he’s trying to date. The way they look at eachother is like they are equals like yin and Yang. That’s my only dispute here…. 🙃

The fact that the platonic dynamic between Lois & Clark worked better than the romantic _is why it worked, realistically speaking._ Romance excites the blood flow but it has no stamina, same with casual sex & giving fuck me eyes: It wears out eventually, because hormones don't last forever. No staying power. ~ This applies to writing a relationship as much as real ones _Bonds & friendship_ is a better bet if you want to marry someone or write characters that are going to marry, which is why i can definitely buy 100% that those two would be happily married with children with no chance of divorce. Why? Cause their dynamic has actual substance, a legit foundation. *Another example is Barry Allen & Tina from the 90s Flash,* they had a very platonic relationship, Barry even verbally describes it "Intimate but Platonic", very little romance but so much respect. Thus it worked so well because it was beyond sex appeal, it was believable. People need to be taking notes, on god lol.

The best thing about Smallville was the rise & fall of Clark & Lex's friendship Smallville started to die when they spent almost 9 seasons on Clark's undying love with Lana Lang or just Lana in general. I'm surprised they didn't start calling the show Lanaville Lana & Clark's romance should've ended at the end of season 4 after they graduated Pete left during the season & the show went on. The show would've survived if Lana left in season 4 thanks to the writers obsession with Lana she became unbearable as the seasons went on because they turned Lana into a selfish bitch. And Clark turned into a pu$$y who thought Lana could do no wrong he finds fault with everyone including his parents but her Clark was such a doormat whenever Lana was around. And Chloe was the only one who called him on his shit until Lois came along & Clark was double teamed hell, even his cousin Kara called Clark on his shit. And don't get me started on them having Clark's dad falling in love with Lana's aunt then having Clark & Lana finding a baby in the field basically reckoning Martha & Johnathan finding Clark in the field that's insulting. How about Clark thinking everyone he sees with powers came from Smallville like when he met Bart/Impulse or Arthur Curry/Aquaman I'm like "Hey Clark you need to leave that small bubble of a town & see how big the world is not every individual with abilities came from Kansas. The only time I felt sorry for Lana was when she learned who her real father was she found out the dad who raised her wasn't her real father so she sought him out at first he didn't want anything to do with her. But he eventually came around only for his new relationship with Lana began to cause a strain on his marriage which so tearfully Lana decided to let her father go so he could save his marriage that was the only sad moment to me everything else I was like this girl has got to go.

Considering everything Clark and Lana relationship storyline from season one to season 8 was outstanding in my opinion along with their great chemistry, they both stretched the show greatly but on the flip side the writers made Lana's character and fandom deteriorate by having her with and marrying Lex and having her play a role in losing one of the best characters in Jonathan Kent so that's probably why Lois and Clark is slighty higher than Lana and Clark in this rating but Lana and Clark as a relationship and couple was fantastic as opposed to Lois and Clark weird and a bit disturbing relationship.

Same. They spent 10 years developing Clark's powers and having him learn to accept his destiny. Then, about 10 years later we find out that he had thrown it all away sometime earlier. So basically they spent more time setting up something than it would actually last, completely invalidating the series.
