CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Klaatu (Michael Rennie), the alien visitor, emerges from his flying saucer and greets the Earthlings.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
All of Washington, D.C., is thrown into a panic when an extraterrestrial spacecraft lands near the White House. Out steps Klaatu (Michael Rennie, in a role intended for Claude Rains), a handsome and soft-spoken interplanetary traveler, whose "bodyguard" is Gort (Lock Martin), a huge robot who spews forth laser-like death rays when danger threatens. After being wounded by an overzealous soldier, Klaatu announces that he has a message of the gravest importance for all humankind, which he will deliver only when all the leaders of all nations will agree to meet with him. World politics being what they are in 1951, Klaatu's demands are turned down and he is ordered to remain in the hospital, where his wounds are being tended. Klaatu escapes, taking refuge in a boarding house, where he poses as one "Mr. Carpenter" (one of the film's many parallels between Klaatu and Christ). There the benign alien gains the confidence of a lovely widow (Patricia Neal) and her son, Bobby (Billy Gray), neither of whom tumble to his other-worldly origins, and seeks out the gentleman whom Bobby regards as "the smartest man in the world" -- an Einstein-like scientist, Dr. Barnhardt (Sam Jaffe). The next day, at precisely 12 o'clock, Klaatu arranges for the world to "stand still" -- he shuts down all electrical power in the world, with the exception of essentials like hospitals and planes in flight. Directed by Robert Wise, who edited Citizen Kane (1941) and The Magnificent Ambersons (1942) for director Orson Welles before going on to direct such major 1960s musicals as West Side Story (1961) and The Sound of Music (1965), The Day the Earth Stood Still was based on the story Farewell to the Master by Harry Bates.

The audience is bated in a way, when Klaatu brings out his “gift” that resembles a weapon. When Klaatu is shot it makes us (Earth or US) out to be crazy and aggressive. Confusing aggressive with defensive has always been a good SiFi theme.

The soldiers who took part in this movie were members of the 3rd Calvary Division stationed in Fort Meade. The military was kind enough to supply all the equipment and manpower for the production of this film including some ancient weapons like the .30 cal Watercooled Browning MG to the new gear being used such as the M1 Carbines and M24 Chaffee.

I will never forget when Michael Rennie introduced The Day the Earth Stood Still in 1962 for NBC's S Saturday Night at the Movies. I was 7 years old, and my whole family gathered round the old B&W tv to watch it. I wish someone could find a clip of this and post it some where on KZfaq. 1951 I was 6 years old when I saw this movie. It scared the crap out of me. Later, it became a favorite when I realized the allegory of the film. A wise and noble man arrives on Earth, coming in peace. In the end, he is killed but is brought back to life. And while on Earth, he goes by the name...Mr. Carpenter. Forget the Keanu Reeves farce..This is great sci fi interlaced with religious themes . And Bernard Herrman's great score.

there are no advanced civilisations close enough to monitor the shell of radio waves that have been emanating from this planet for the last 100 years or so, and our signals get weaker the further out in space that they go. Radio searches have found no traces of alien signals and we have been searching for decades. If they do exist, they will be too far away for us to detect them.

I never knew it but I read recently that the lead role was originally cast to my favourite actor of all time, Mr Claude Rains, but he declined it due to a prior engagement. You're absolutely right. He also emerged wearing a helmet that made him look extremely menacing. That was unnecessary since he could breathe earth's atmosphere. Furthermore, he arrives on our doorstep un-announced and un-invited and we're just supposed to take his word that he "comes in peace." For all we know, he could have been a fugitive from an advanced culture intent on conquering earth like Commander Xavier in "Galactica 1980" or the Visitors from "V."

Hmmm, I'm not sure that's the point the writers were trying to make and why it nearly never surfaced. It showed how quick we are to jump to the wrong conclusion that something unknown is 'a weapon'. I'm not saying these movies are perfect. An example is why were they going to the professors house to be safe when in fact the professor was already at the ship along with all the other dignitaries? Probably has something to with the editing too.
@flyboysteven9979
@flyboysteven9979 7 жыл бұрын
You are probably right about the writers' intentions. Regardless of that though, you have to admit, what Klaatu did was stupid. He comes from an advanced civilization, totally unknown to the Earthlings. He comes walking out of his space ship, has a hundred military guys with guns trained on him, and he is too naive to notice?....he just walked right up to them and shoved that gizmo into their face without saying a word. Even if he had taken his helmet off to show the Earthlings that he looked just like them, that might have helped SOME....He just asked for what he got.....I find it hard to believe that a man from an advanced civilization didn't even anticipate the possibility of hostile reactions from the Earthlings. I guess Klaatu never watched the countless movies that we have where stupid humans always rush to VIOLENCE as the first reaction to anything they don't understand....hahahahah

I'm of the certainty that if there are indeed "aliens" out there with the technology to travel between galaxies, bet the farm they all agree on one thing: Avoid planet earth completely. Yes, it is inhabited but regrettably, not with intelligent life. Stay away!

Let's visit a planet in the midst of military conflicts and fear of global war, and where they never have seen an Alien before. Also don't contact them before you do. Keep your suit on for no reason so that you look strange and that they cant see your face, and if they are armed then point at them with something that could be a weapon... What could possibly go wrong?

Definitely right, @notsogentleboi. who knew no one watches b&w movies anymore? I watch the 1966 Batman all the flipping time. *even though it might be weird to watch in 2119 from the year the first colored batman show came out over 2 centuries ago from 2119. LOL

As a fan of this movie there is a flaw. Such technology could have sent a radio/tv type message prior to landing. To just land without any preamble like this could be interpreted as aggressive.

The scene where the people run away looks choppy. What caused this was the director thought the didn't run fast enough so he had every other frame cut out.

I used part of this in a sort of rock video I made for Wed nite Bible study! KZfaq didn't like my use of movie clips very much (you and hundreds more have done it and didn't get blocked), but I petitioned. This made for great discussion as a "Christ allegory." How the filmmakers thought it was subliminal confounds me. Ha! Much appreciation. ---Bert

We have come in person so you know without doubt the message we bring to you is real. Your frailty of mind we understand. No weapons will be allowed outside of your planet. We mean you no harm. But you now must know all life outside your planet is protected. Your desire to explore space is welcomed. You primates have now reached a point of concern for other living creatures outside of your planet. You are welcomed to continue your exploration. But remember you are being watched. If you harm other life forms outside of your planet we will deny future exploration until you have evolved further... Peaceful coexistence and respect are the ruling for all living creatures outside of their World!!!

+ConcreteSurfer420 The film makers try to be too clever, an exact script remake simply set in today's world, would have been awesome, just imagine M1 tanks, snipers and Apache helicopters surrounding the saucer and a slightly updated Gort. AND use slightly updated original music!
