We have never seen a player who is able to make time for themselves on the ball and combined with such impeccable decision making as the Maestro. Football, like all sports evolves but I feel that you could take Zidane and drop him into a world cup match in 2124 and he would still be the best player on the pitch. His genius is simply timeless.

Zidane won everything fair and square, champions league, world cup, euro, in one of the most competitive eras ever and he led the french team to a world cup second final and that team was about to be eliminated in preliminars without Zizou. Put Zidane in Germany vs Netherlands WC finals in 74 and he would obliterate Germany defense.

@@serges4188 I love Zidane, and I don't care about trophies when I value a player; I just care about quality and performances. Zidane is one of the best players ever seen, absolutely right. But he couldn't dribble three or four players as Messi, Ronaldo Nazario and Maradona did many times, for instance. He couldn't score a goal running from box to box, as Cruyff, Pelé and Di Stéfano did many times. And he didn't have the influence in the game that all those six players had at their prime. It is Zizou who, several times, has said that Ronaldo Nazario ws the best player of his generation. In the history of football several players were as great as Zidane: you have Puskas, Eusebio, Garrincha, Beckenbauer, Charlton, Platini, Van Basten, Romario, Cristiano.... All of them were phenomenal. but not as much as were Pelé, Maradona, Messi, Di Stéfano, Cruyff or brazilian Ronaldo.

The team should have won the 2002 world cup. It was the most beautiful France team ever. The best of the world in every position and on top of that the best of the best with Zidane. Between 2000 and 2002 this team was far above everyone else. Only Argentina could have been as good as them in the world cup if everything went right. But everything went wrong and these two teams were out so soon what a shame 😢 A very strange tournament this 2002 world cup. Even if the brazil’s victory was great to see with Ronaldo-Ronaldinho-Rivaldo (i love that team), it was all a disappointment for so many nations….

Exactly. This 2002 WC is so stacked its unbelievable when you look at the squads and the names its probably the best ever. Beside Germany which had a not so great team in comparison with its history the rest of the field is incredible and yet after the first round and the last 16 pretty much all the favorites beside Brazil are out. Very strange tournament indeed. To put it differently if I had to choose a team in which my life was on the balance, meaning the team win you live or else you die, on the paper I would pick this french team all the time. Funny thing the football sometime. PS I'm french so not absolutely objective but still... what a squad.

Well you have to remember France were notably unlucky with Zidane injured and out for the first two games, Pires was also injured that tournament. Henry was suspended for the last group game. This should have been Zidane's tournament in his prime bit we didn't get to see that.

@@shampar10 exactly. Too many injuries. And to begin with the one of Pires who was very important for the team at the time. And especially for Zidane actually. Pires was giving him support the same Djorkaeff was used to do but even better. So Zidane was able to do whatever he wanted in the midfield it was delightful to watch. And then the beginning of 2002 was catastrophic with Pires injury. The all french team had to redo the dynamic of their game which was just perfect before that. Henry was the best striker of the premier league. Trezeguet the best striker of italy. Pires the best player of the premier league i think the previous year. And so on. But they were all too tired at the end of their season too. And the conditions in korea and japan at the time was horrible for their bodies. Well too bad…but I will always remember this 2000-2001 french team as one of the greatest of all time. A pure pleasure to watch. And Lord, Zidane in that time was really from an another world. His prime was magical…

Agreed. Pires had a torn ACL in february or march with Arsenal so it was a known factor at the time. Zidane hurt himself in a friendly game against South Korea a week or so before the opening game because the SK federation paid several million dollars and contractualy demanded that Zidane played that game. There was a debate in France at the time before that game saying it was an unnecessary risk but the french FA decided otherwise. The rest is as we often say, history ! Zidane was on his prime but still delivered few years later despite the ending.

Zidane is the greatest. All his athletic conditions was average or even below average, yet his performance was like art. Messi, Ronaldo, Mpabbe, Pele, Maradona, Ronaldinho all can be compared, but Zidane is uncomparable.

Messi Ronaldo did not face greats of defenders, maldini, baresi on top players will chop your legs off hence why players career were shorter compared to full protection players get nowadays, bad tackles will get yellow card, now it’s instant red card
