Hello again! :D
For Part 2 of my look into the history of the DC-9 family, we go from the original barnstormer that was the Douglas DC-9 of the 1960s, to its unfortunate follow up for the 1980s and 90s, the McDonnell Douglas MD-80 Series, an improved range that was initially a major success, but quickly found that an outdated design, high fuel costs and the arrival of a new competitor in its market segment rapidly ate away the essential monopoly it once enjoyed, with successive upgrades in the form of the MD-90 failing to save the ailing McDonnell Douglas Company, and thus led to the very last variant of the DC-9 family, the MD-95, being released as a Boeing product, coming to pass as the modestly successful Boeing 717.

Fun fact: the DC-9. MD-80 series, and 717 all share the same Type Rating for pilot certification purposes, even though they are fairly different cockpits. In the words of a friend who was a 717 captain, "My license says DC-9, but don't ask me to fly one, I won't know how." From a practical perspective, what the common type rating means is that a pilot can transition from a DC-9 to an MD80 or 717 with a reduced amount of training, instead of having to complete a full aircraft training course.

RIP to TWA, Midwest Express, and even AirTran. I remember seeing ads for Hawaiian's new fleet of Boeing 717s while on vacation around 2000. I thought it was some brand-new airframe fresh from Boeing's development department and didn't realize until later that it was a warmed-over DC-9, although one that was very well done. Sadly, when Boeing and McDonnell Douglas merged, the same managerial team that couldn't figure out how to innovate or make money on the DC-9 became the leaders of the new company, and Boeing's history over the last 25 years reflects this lack of innovation and penny-pinching.

Just flew on a couple of Qantaslink B717's last week on a return trip to Hobart from Sydney. That deep shove back into my seat I felt when the pilot gunned the throttles on take-off (I had window seats at the rear both times so it was loud!) & then pointed the thing straight-up into the air once the wheels cleared the ground was exhilarating and something that I had not experienced since flying on B727 tri-jets from short runways back in the day. The landings were just as eventful, with the nimble little jet performing steep turns on both approaches, with extreme bank-angles and brisk descent rates not usually encountered in commercial aviation nowadays. It will be a shame when these great littles planes are eventually retired in favour of more bland Airbus offerings...

Honorable mention to New York Air, which was an early customer for the MD-80 by fall 1983, added to a fleet of DC-9-30s.Those Mad Dogs went to Continental after the 1987 "big bang" consolidation of CO/NY/PE. Ironically, NY was also an early customer for the 737-300. I was NY's ad manager June 1983 to Dec 1986 and one of the first things I worked on was the MD-80 intro which was a very big deal for us. And I have to say, an elegant livery, red with the logo in white in the specially designed New York Bauer typeface and the signature stylized apple on the tail.

Always been fascinated by the DC9s and MD80s. Slightly before my time so never flown on one in the UK. Interest comes from my mum working on them before I came along. She was cabin crew for British Midland, who I believe flew DC9s short and medium haul before switching allegiance to the 737 camp. People thought she was crazy for joining them in ‘89 just after the Kegworth disaster. Incredible video as always - thank you!

OUTSTANDING presentation: well researched and narrated, with exceptional photos and facts. I was an Avionics Engineer for Midwest Airlines, and maintained/modified our fleet of DC-9 and MD-83/88 aircraft. I was also on the flight test team (Customer) for the B-717, as it entered revenue service with Midwest. During manufacturing at Longbeach, the rudders were the only painted items which divulged the livery scheme, so it was easy to determine which B-717 was destined for AirTran, and which would fly from Milwaukee with Midwest. Thanks for the memories: your efforts are much appreciated!

Personal reflection: Oldest DC-9 was a series 15 I flew on Northwest sometime in the 90's. It was pretty old by then. I flew a ton of MD-80's with American in the 90's, and with Midwest Express in the 90's also. ME was a great airline, and all their planes were 2+2 seating, and they baked fresh cookies aboard. I don't recall any MD90 or 717 flights, so my schedules must have not aligned with their usage. It's been at least 20 years now since I've flown any of these, with most having been replaced by regional jets or feeder regional airlines as the industry shifted. I don't have any numbers, but I imagine that 9/11 was the death of many of the older DC9 variants.

The biggest asset the DC-9 series had was that is ground handling equipment was not required to service it. All cargo and fuel and lavatories could be done by hand and even catering and passengers loading/unload if in a pinch. ITS BIGGEST SHORTFALL was the engines and the wing design, as the fuselage lengthened the power to wieght ratio shrank . The airframe just needed more power then jt8 , v2500 or the RR could produce. By the time the hull got to the MD-80 series the wings lifting capability rapidly started to diminish the solution was bigger engines.

Again and again: the DC-9 was very flexible.. Indeed it was, in 1998 I was commuting every week with SAS from Bergen to Oslo, and my favorite seating was isle in one of the rear seats, espesially in the aging DC-9s by looking at the seat row you could easily see the air frame flexing after takeoff and again when landing 😊.. Some flexing also in the MDs but not that much.. I loved the DC 9 range of airplanes, it had a lot of charm, or maybe it was the service back then 😅..

Having the CG so far back was a major problem for loading baggage on the MD-80s. Although the baggage compartments were long, they were not tall nor wide so each one didn't hold all that many bags. Because of the extreme aft CG, the majority of the bags needed to be loaded in the forward compartment or the plane would be too tail-heavy. Many a ramp agent cursed these planes as they toiled to stuff as many bags as possible up front.

Today is 4 months since the 40th anniversary of the crash of Air Illinois Flight 710 near Pinckneyville, Illinois due to the flightcrew's mismanagement of electrical generator and distribution problems. All 10 passengers and crew were killed in the accident. Why couldn’t Air Illinois purchase a few DC-9-10 series?! Maybe access to spare parts would have been easier as well as better training for pilots and Air Illinois may stay in business longer than disappearing in 1984. If the airplane for Air Illinois Flight 710 was a DC-9-10 series, the accident may never have happened.

Certification requirements... It simulates a reverser unlocking in flight. They have to demonstrate getting the plane on the ground.

As the software guy, maintaining the MD-80 simulators at Long beach, I did it regularly on the simulator. A great two years in southern California for this Canadian 😎

Correct me if I am wrong but you failed to mention the MD82 Spanair crash at Madrid Barajas airport in 2008 killing 154 people.

Strange, this is the same company that runs Boeing now. Seems like there may be some similarities.

10:10 - what source are you citing? There were no Tristars in Aeroflot, and not even a talk about building Lockheed planes in USSR. There was just one demonstration of Tristar in Moscow at 1974 or so...

The final straw that killed McDonnell Douglas was Airbus. Airbus was highly subsidized in order create Economic union in the EU. The MD aircraft could not compete with well financed Airbus and the fact that EU airlines would buy Airbus as a matter of government policy. Unfortunately the good management at Boeing seemed to be infected with MD bad management practices.

The 737 was the wrong aircraft to survive. The Douglas design would never have had the engine ground clearance problem that the 737 suffered from the very beginning and led to the 737 max debacle. That will probably eventually bankrupt Boeing.

If the B717 were still in production today, the C-Series and next-gen Embraers would not exist. AirTran tried hard to lobby boeing for more 717’s but Boeing wanted it gone and gave AirTran discounts on the 737 instead. Fedex tried hard to lobby boeing on the MD-11 as well. And Boeing said come back with 200 orders and we’ll keep it going. So FedEx lobby the number of cargo airlines and came back with the 200 orders and boeing said well you just called our bluff. No more MD-11’s. So Fedex upset with Boeing looked to the Airbus A380 and the rest is history.
