Salut! :D
In this week's video we go back to the 1990s, when Airbus released their largest airliner built to that time, the Airbus A340, a four-engined workhorse designed to do battle with the Boeing 747-400 for market dominance of the long-haul segment, but was sadly based on long outdated principles that meant its very existence was difficult to justify, but nevertheless resulted in one of the most reliable and safest large passenger aircraft ever produced, and one that has been the backbone of many major airlines for nearly 30 years.

I was present at the first A340 rollout in Toulouse. It was a very extravagant affair and the guests partied well into the small hours. I was on an outwork party from Deutsche Airbus Lemwerder repairing an Adria Airlines A320; however, my colleagues and I were not invited to the party. Our shift recommended as soon as the A340 entered the presentation hangar. Still , it was worth seeing. They had a full orchestra and a huge choir inside the hangar.

Finnair's A340s were always a treat when they were put on the HEL-LHR run. Well worth blowing some points for proper business class. The A350 is also a delight, though :) The A340-300 is legendary for its lacklustre climb performance, indeed it's said that it only climbs due to the curvature of the earth. I remember sitting in my car on the north side of the BA maintenance hangar at Heathrow, watching departures off 09R popping up from behind the building - A320s and the like about 1/3 of the way along, heavies half-way, with BA's 747 to Lagos a little further than that. Then came Air Jamaica's A343. Jamaica's a long way, and Jamaicans are not known for packing light. I watched in amazement, then horror, as this A340 popped out the *side* of the building, staggered through a 180-degree turn, and *disappeared back behind the hangar*. I wonder whether it reached Kingston or cruising altitude first.

Well the A340 is basically outfitted with 4 engines that the A320 uses. But once it’s up in the air it’s very comfortable. I flew from Frankfurt to Costa Rica a couple of months ago with a 342 and it was a very pleasant flight. Especially because of the 2-4-2 configuration

6yjjk I've read many reports stating that ATC (American ones anyway) absolutely hated them. They couldn't climb, accelerate or maneuver. They performed like beached walruses. They had the reputation of clogging up airspace and slowing everything down. Their favorite aircraft was the Boeing 757. It could climb like a homesick angel, accelerate like a race car and turn on a dime. Anything requested it could do.
@MrJimheeren
@MrJimheeren Жыл бұрын
@@terryboyer1342 the A340 is literally one of the safest aircraft ever build. Why would any pilot hate flying an aircraft that climbs a little slower then usual. Plus the 757 is a very different kind of plane and on top of that most pilots that fly for airlines fly only one type (sometimes 2) type of aircraft mostly from the same manufacturer. So I don’t think there are a lot of pilots around that flew both the 340 and the 757
@terryboyer1342
@terryboyer1342 Жыл бұрын
@@MrJimheeren I didn't say pilots hate flying the A-340. I said ATC controllers hated having them in their airspace because of their poor performance. Yes, the A-340 and 757 are different aircraft that fill different missions. I never said that there were a lot of pilots who flew both. I just thought the controllers favorite and least favorite aircraft to deal with and why was interesting.

The A340 will live on, while most airlines have retired them, but in countries like Iran, where new aircraft can't be ordered from Airbus or Boeing, the A340 will remain in these heavily sanctioned countries, like Iran and Venezuela.

Fly by Wire replaced pulleys and cables to hydraulic actuators. EFIS replaced the cockpit dials (narrative regarding A320). B777 was Boeings first Fire by wire but used control column in keeping with previous types. The A320 side stick means pilots get a pull out table to eat a meal from. Ex B777, A320, RJ100 pilot. Now Captain A350

I remember flying into Munich Airport in the early 2000's (United 777)and seeing several these lined up in Lufthansa livery as we made our way to the gate and then noticing they had the unique extra bogy you could see from the rear of the aircraft as they were parked at the gate. Ever since, I've wanted to fly on one, but only so far have gone on it's stable mate the A330. It's such an outlier among twin-engine aircraft we see all the time today.

One of the biggest problems for the A340s efficiency was not the fact that it had 4 engines, but that it was designed around a much higher weight than the A330. The fuel burn of these aircraft is roughly proportional to the weight, so the higher MTOW of the A340 combined with the higher empty weight necessitated by the strengthening to meet that MTOW meant the A340 was around 20% heavier (in the case of the 300 vs 300) than the A330. The 500/600 are even worse in this respect, combining a very high structural weight necessitated to carry the 150+ tonnes of fuel with a very narrow fuselage cross section (allowing only 8 abreast seating compared to the 777s 9 or 10). This results in the passenger capacity per tonne of aircraft weight being extremely poor across the lineup, and the resulting fuel burn per passenger being quite high.

I saw a video about the A340 on another channel and it's reason of existence and kinda failure is that Airbus underestimated the impact of ETOPS-120 and 180 (180 and 207 cover 95% of the earth) in the development, they didn't believe the cost of the certification process that each plane had to go through would break even so quick because of the much higher efficiency of twin-engined aircraft. Luckily they've developed it together with the A330 and that became the bestseller but still a lot of A340s are in service today, arte (French-German public broadcaster) did a documentary last autumn, due to covid the Lufthansa stored some A340 and A380 (they've already partially retired them in 2019/2020) in Teruel, Spain but the demand is so high now that they've brought these back, I was in Munich two weeks ago and because my hotel was much closer to the airport than to the city we did some planespotting and saw a Lufthansa A340 taking off with destination Boston or New York, also saw an A380 landing a day earlier.

The 4 that TAP had on their fleet were true workhorses. The planes flew until they were worn out, literally, shuttling back and forth between Lisbon, destinations in Africa and the Anericas (they even flew on a short lived Lisbon to Macao route in the beginning of their active lides), on a career that lasted for 24 years. Being of the -312 variant, they seemed to have a special way of taking off. It took a loooong time for them to leave the ground and reach Cruise altitude (about an hour ...), But it was a show to be seen ... and heard, with the unmistaksble roar of a quad jet. Well, fron time to time it is still possible to see A340s in Lisbon, but from Hifly, that flies the type worldwde, including a unique operation to the Antartctic continent, landing on ice. But the rarest of the type are the A340-500d. Only about 6 flying worldwide. They're gas guzzlers

In the late 90s / 2000 I did a fair few uk-hk trips and I was always happiest flying on a340s over 747s, whether virgin or cathay and once singapore to it's namesake. It was smoother and quieter than the 747. And I think the 2 jet winning over 4 jets took just economics into consideration and not the peace of mind of the passenger - me, anyway :-)

Flew on both A340-300 & A340-600 when Cathay Pacific had both Aeroplanes in the years 2001-2006. A340-600 can actually do a 16 hours 20 minutes JFK-HKG flight since A340-300 cannot actually fly past the high Arctic winds which requires an Anchorage refueling stop to do HKG-JFK both ways. On the other hand across the Pacific Ocean you will need Honolulu refueling stop Vancouver to Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport and also Los Angeles to Manila on A340-300.

I have a bias towards quad engined single floor jets. It was the beginning of all jet set era (De Havilland Comet and 707 were both 4 engined single floor airliner). A340 truly marked the end of such era. Been in SIA flight from CGK to SIN back in late 1990s. Very quiet, very modern for its time, and very comfortable. The quietness is its most underappreciated trait. I have been in flight with numerour Rolls Royce powered A330, despite having 4 engines, A340-300 is one of the quietest jets ever.

An excellent video, thanks. Lots of nice archive footage (even if at various points it didn’t match up with what the voiceover was discussing.) But I don’t believe the RB211 was ever suggested for the A340, rather the IAE SuperFan which was unceremoniously cancelled and had it gone on to fly on the aircraft, might have led to better performance / more range / better economics. Nothing quite as quiet as row 1 on an A340-300, flew on many GF and CX examples over the years.

Okay so it's time I explained to the a340 in 1985 Turkish airlines with operating the Airbus a310 too many long-haul destinations including Singapore Bangkok except the u.s. do to because of the etops regulations the a310 was not allowed to fly to the US it wasn't until the etops regulation was allowed 1988 Turkish airlines start flying with Airbus a310 to the United States of America New York JFK and unfortunately they had to make a stop off at Brussels many of the other destinations I mentioned required a stop of this was making the airline very very bad and very very non-profitable unfortunately they were almost about to go bankrupt my flag carrier being bankrupt was not a good sign and 1988 when a new chairman came to take over this airline he put together a team to decide which airplane to buy and replace a310 from Airbus there were four options one was the Boeing 767 but due to its range limitations was not able to do what Turkish airlines wanted to do the next plane was md-11 but due to the DC-10 crash that happened we did not want to deal with mcdouglas no more the the next option is Boeing 747 400 but due to the space at the Atatürk airport we had no space to fit this big plane at the time are President wanted the 747 but due to the space and also in the winter time not being able to fill the plane up we did not buy the plane it was not until 1990 that we would reconsider buying for Kuwait airlines 747 but due to the Gulf War we basically decided not to buy those planes are fourth option was the Airbus a340 and this plane was what made Turkish airlines today global this plane with allowed us fly 14 hours nonstop too many of our without refueling thus allowing us to be more productive this way Turkish airlines got out of the bankruptcy in 1990 at the Paris air show we purchased five Airbus a340 with another five later on we would purchase two of our five optional on June 8th 1993 the first plain named Istanbul with its registration tango Charlie Juliet Delta Juliet did its first flight on June 26th 1993 we received the plane being the third launch customer after Air France and Lufthansa with these planes we now could do a lot more long-haul flights without refueling and open up new destinations are second plane came on August 10th 1993 which was named tango Charlie Juliet Delta kilo and was named the city of Isparta also in 1996 we were filmed by justplanes being the first a340 movie that you can buy on just planes.com it's a classic that you should be watching from Istanbul to New York New York to Istanbul and the crew will show you everything that the cockpit has with these planes we were able to become profitable more new roots with more profitable profitable financial status at the end or last plane came in the year two-thousand which concluded our a340 purchase without these planes Turkish airlines would be profitable or would be a bankrupt the airline these planes helped us become global and now we are in our new home and our new airport Istanbul airport which I think is one of the best for these planes I have flown them a lot my first flight with with Lufthansa from Frankfurt to Montreal my second flight was with Air France from d.c. to France Paris and to Dubai which was one of the best flights I could remember third time with the a340 was actually on Turkish airlines in in 2009 these planes were actually the best and I could easily see what my airline did I did this with Istanbul to New York New York to Istanbul which was one of the best flight the first flight was with economy the second with with business class and I got to see firsthand what this a340 could do this is one of the best planes and there's one of our planes that I am now going to share that has a story this story is about tango Charlie Juliet Delta milke and here is her story enjoy it I hope to have more memories with the a340 all of Turkish airlines a340s are retired but I'm going to share you this story that represents this plane which is Izmir and hopefully you will enjoy this story thank you very much and hope to hear your comments

Deli Mike or Deli Mayk (English: Crazy Mike) is a nickname given to an Airbus A340-300 operated by Turkish Airlines with civil registration TC-JDM. The aircraft joined the Turkish Airlines fleet in 1996 to replace the McDonnell Douglas DC-10s of the airline and was used to operate long-haul flights out of Turkey. During its operation, Deli Mike had a record of having minor and strange technical failures. This unreliability gave the aircraft its nickname, which is a wordplay on the ICAO spelling alphabet. In its late use, the aircraft operated both long-haul and short-haul flights. It was re-configured in 2016 to only have economy class seats and was solely used to carry pilgrims to Hajj. Deli Mike was removed from the Turkish Airlines fleet in early 2019 and was flown to O. R. Tambo International Airport later that year and re-registered as 2-AVRA. The aircraft was stored at Johannesburg for almost 4 years. In December 2022, it was flown to Mehrabad International Airport. In the late 1980s, Turkish Airlines wanted to expand to North America and East Asia. The McDonnell Douglas DC-10s operated by the airline during that time were in the process of being phased out,[1] leaving the Airbus A310 as the only option for these routes. However, the Airbus A310 did not have the range to fly to these destinations and would have had to make a stopover to refuel.[2] In January 1990, after examining two possible aircraft types-the Airbus A340 and McDonnell Douglas MD-11-an internal commission unanimously voted to opt for the Airbus A340 due to its technical advantages and cost benefits.[3] On 27 March 1990, Turkish Airlines ordered five Airbus A340-300 aircraft, which included an option for a further five. TC-JDM joined the fleet of Turkish Airlines in April 1996 and became the fourth A340 to do so. The aircraft was given the name "İzmir".Shortly after delivery, the aircraft started to have "random" technical issues and failures. Sometimes, the aircraft would turn its external lights on by itself and then back off when someone tried to intervene.[4] Occasionally, the lights of the emergency exits would turn on one by one from front to back "like a Mexican wave", not all at the same time, which according to the cabin crew meant that Deli Mike "was in a good mood". The aircraft also made "small jokes" to passengers and crew. On one occasion, the aircraft started sounding the master caution alarm in the cockpit, causing one of the inexperienced cabin crew members to panic. Frequent problems with the aircraft included the reading light of a completely different passenger turning on when the button is pressed, and the same issue also exists with the button used to call a crew member. One popular story among technical staff states that an employee fixed the faulty flight instruments of the aircraft simply by talking to it.[5] In the ICAO spelling alphabet used in aviation, the spelling of D and M, the final two letters of the civil registration of the aircraft, is "Delta Mike". Following the technical problems surrounding the aircraft, technicians of Turkish Airlines have swapped "Delta" to "Deli"-meaning "crazy" in Turkish-to reflect the characteristics of the aircraft, which resulted in the nickname "Deli Mike".[4] Despite their age, Airbus A340's were used as "jokers" in the 2010s, flying both short domestic and long-haul flights.[6] In September 2011, Deli Mike had a runway excursion while landing at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai. None of the occupants were injured in the incident.[7] Turkish Airlines pulled its Airbus A340 aircraft from scheduled flights in May 2016.[8] From July 2016 onwards, TC-JDM and other A340 aircraft in the Turkish Airlines fleet were used on charter flights to carry passengers to Hajj.[4] The aircraft was reconfigured to have an all-economy class layout, without any business class seats.[8] During the winter period of 2016, a heavy downfall in traffic caused the airline to temporarily ground dozens of aircraft, including Deli Mike.[9] In August 2017, Hürriyet reported that Turkish Airlines expected to maintain its Airbus A340 aircraft and use them for the Hajj flights until 2021 "thanks to good maintenance".[4] Deli Mike was the oldest aircraft of the Turkish Airlines fleet as of September 2017.[10] On 22 October 2018, Turkish Airlines grounded TC-JDM alongside her sister aircraft TC-JDN at Istanbul Atatürk Airport.[11] The aircraft was retired from the fleet in early January 2019;[5] the livery of the airline was removed from the aircraft later that month.[12] There was initial speculation about the plane being turned into a restaurant, as had previously happened to three sister aircraft.[5] In March 2019, the aircraft was ferried to O. R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, South Africa. Subsequently, the aircraft was transferred to Avro Global, re-registered as 2-AVRA, and stored in Johannesburg.[7] In December 2022, Deli Mike and three other former Turkish Airlines Airbus A340's flew again for the first time in years.[13] The planes departed Johannesburg back to back on 24 December towards Uzbekistan, but made an emergency landing at Mehrabad International Airport in Tehran, reportedly to evade sanctions placed on Iran.[14] According to technicians of Turkish Technic, the aircraft maintenance subsidiary of Turkish Airlines, "Deli Mike can fly to the other side of the world without any problems if she wants to. If she doesn't feel like it, she won't move even one metre on the ground." The technicians also removed and reinstalled all systems on-board and reset the software of the aircraft in an attempt to solve the issues, without any success.[15] While criticizing Turkish Airlines in February 2018 for ordering new aircraft while many others were grounded in the meantime, Bora Erdin of pro-opposition newspaper Sözcü also added that the airline made "no clarification as to why the problematic plane [Deli Mike] was used persistently while unproblematic ones were on the ground" and highlighted the frequent issue of the landing gear not retracting after takeoff, causing the aircraft to return to the origin airport.[16]

13:40 - my oh my that's an ugly cabin interior and cabin crew uniform. What a contrast to the elegance of the A340 itself. There used to be lines of South African A340s sunning themselves in Johannesburg - but not any more.

Really enjoy your videos. If you could slow down your speech just a little your content would be much easier to understand. Listen to your own videos and compare them to other documentary style content and you will see that you are talking way too fast.

@@heotak3408 Nobody needs to convert ASU or Imperial units anymore as they are obsolete in most part of the world. If you didn't realise that Newtons are used for thrust everywhere else outside of the USA , you need to get a passport and travel a bit more, there is a whole big wide world outside . . .

@@TRPGpilot you are wrong. Look up the development history of the A300. The technical director opted to use imperial units and English for its development to better appeal to the American market as American Airlines showed great interest in the jet.

In my books the 340 is and was a failure of biblical proportions. The life of this bucket was just so too short, that everything else makes it look seriously stupid.
