The Deadly Explosion Hazard you Didn't Know was Sitting in your Shop

If you’ve got a garage or workshop, then you probably have a tool you’ve used a thousand times without really thinking about just how dangerous it can actually be. I’m gonna discuss a potentially deadly hazard that could be sitting in your garage or shop right now. I’m gonna explain some of the physics as to why and how it can be such a lethal threat, and I’m gonna tell you some things you can do to help keep you safe.
The tool I’m talking about, it’s your air compressor. It’s an extremely handy tool to have in any shop or garage. We use them for anything from inflating tires, to running air powered tools to blowing dust or debris from our work area. You may have it sitting over in a corner, or under a work bench, or even outside the shop all together. And if you’re like me, you rarely think about doing the one thing that’s critical for keeping your compressor in good safe working condition. When was the last time you drained the water from your compressor tank? Prior to the making of this video, I honestly can’t remember the last time I’ve drained mine because I simply just don’t think about it.
Pressures applied to contained fluids over a large area can generate enormous forces that act against the inside of the containment vessel. In this video, I’ll be explaining potential dangers of not properly maintaining your air compressor and discuss some of the physics that can make it a potentially lethal hazard. Safety in the shop is extremely important and this video tells you some things you can do to keep your air compressor in good safe working condition.

I know of two situations where people repaired a leaking air compressor tank. Both of them ended shortly after, in an unimaginable explosion with a lot of damage. By the grace of God, no one was injured in either situation. Thanks for this video.

Good stuff. This is also why I don't really recommend buying a used compressor unless you really know what you are getting into. NO ONE remembers to drain the tanks, and the cost of a replacement tank is nearly the cost of a new compressor. Also to add..... under pressure it actually accelerates the rusting process. It might take 20 years for piece of metal setting on the ground to rust, but it will only take a few years for it to do the same inside a compressor tank.

Yep very dangerous, like any tank they should have the life expectancy stamped into the tank at some place

We had one blow up at a newspaper i worked at as a pressman .there were 3 big compressors. Near the sink. All the systems on the press were air operated. About 5 minutes after we all got done cleaning up and went on break. One blew up. It knocked down a big portion of a mortar block wall .blocks were in the sink.

Im a bit worried about the one in my shop now the drain plug is seized and i have tried unsuccessfully to just remove it from the bottom of the tank .
