So I counted the tick marks on the gun wrong. Also, there is no way to know exactly how many men he killed due to the way the game uses textures--it mirrors them on each side of the gun. So the texture has 38 tick marks, but since it is mirrored, the gun has 76. So he could have killed between 38 or 76 men. Also, the difference between 1918 and 2044 is 126 years, not 63. Thanks for clearing up the BoS label on the folder--this was due to a texture mod I had installed. Finally, we're forced to believe 1 of 2 options--that Festus replaced all delivery drivers, and continues to deliver the soda to machines to this day (which requires me to suspend too much of my disbelief, since he is an animatronic toy in a box), or that the company bought another, unnamed experimental robot truck driver (at the exact same time they bought Festus) which we never see in any trucks, nor anywhere else in any Fallout game. I'm not satisfied with either explanation, honestly.

I love how Festus is riddled with bullet holes, showing that over the years many folks have found 50 stars and went to claim the prize but when they found out what it was they shot poor Festus.

On an evil character I picked up the deputy stars, and started roleplaying as some kind of serial killer who'd leave a star on all his victims.

Telling tale of an “immortal man” who is actually a humanoid robot is fantastic writing.

I enjoy the results of the quest. Even after collecting the 1500 caps, the laser gun, and badges you still feel cheated by the company. I think it's that kind of roleplaying and storytelling that makes this game re-playable over and over again.

The reason for the Robco robots in the Repconn Facility is not a lore mistake, it's because the was a hostile takeover by Robco, and the robots got sent in to help with security, it's all in the terminals in the Repconn Offices.

I love how Oxhorn ruthlessly murders Malcolm, and in the next breath calls Allen a ruthless murderer.

Pretty sure the lore basis for this quest was the Indian/star design found on some Tootsie Pop wrappers. The urban legend was that if you collected 10, you could redeem them at stores for a free Tootsie Pop. It was such a pervasive myth that the stores just started honoring it.

When Malcolm talked about the Sunset Sarsaparilla Star caps, and mentioned Festus guarding a treasure, I was under the impression that Festus was a ghoul, given his age. I ended up laughing when I actually saw Festus for myself.

Keep in mind that within Festes' speech, he has a legal obligation to say that Nuka Cola is great drink. It wouldn't surprise me if Badburton forced Sunset to change the story to make it sound like Nuka-Cola has been and always will be the greatest drink on the market. Even going so far as to try to change the past. This is a man so diluted, he tried to beat death and live forever. Clearly a man not within normal faculties.

I don't think Festus was the robot they reference in the computers. Remember that guy who gave you the quest mentions that someone keeps refilling the vending machines and the computer in the loading bay mentions a robot is already doing the deliveries. So there is a robot wandering the desert refilling the machines and comeing back to the factory every once in a while to restock. So unless it's cut content, there may be a robot filled with bottles wandering out there and no one noticed.

The guy who created the janitor bots totally programmed them to put all bottle caps in a specific garbage can so he could win the prize.

I absolutely love this quest, when you stop and think about it, it makes complete sense compared to the Nuka world "Hidden Cappy". It's a contest meant for kids that adults in the wasteland are treasure hunting for, of course the prize isn't meant to be big. Everything from the deputy stars to the suicide note was perfect.

Consider: the established date around the factory is the date the saloon was established, technically being the start of the company that produces the drink, even if the drink wouldn't be produced for several decades.

You’re inspiring me to play RPGs differently. I now focus on the context of the game instead of running and gunning and trying to beat the game. When you play New Vegas like this it makes the game 10x better

Vanilla textures folder is a clean, WHITE, folder with just the Sunset Sarsaparilla logo on it. So really, the guy behind the texture pack re-used the fallout 3 texture. Just saying.

I just collected 50 star caps in under two weeks, I've never found that many so fast on any other play through, I'm honestly surprised I managed to find them so easily. It's been a few years since I played last and this run has been one of my funnest ever, I'm finding _everything_ now lol.

I wish that if you had the Wild Wasteland trait, you have an event where as you're leaving Festus dissappears with some message in his booth saying "See you around, pardner." I wonder if someone made a mod of it happening.

So, Mr Handies in a RobCo facility is getting the Lore wrong? "Mister Handy robots are utility robots created as part of a joint project between General Atomics International and RobCo Industries." Obsidian has many employees who worked on the original Fallout games, one of them even said in a Reddit post that they did use the old Fallout Bible and old documents for refreshing their memories, which sometimes lead to conflicts due to the changes Bethesda made to the Fallout Lore. That also explains the 1918 vs 2044, originally Nuka Cola was just a parody on Coca Cola, which was founded in 1886, Obsidians fallout veterans propably remembered that. Now Bethesda themself fucked up on their own founding date too, watch the Fallout 4 Intro, in around 1 minute, if those two are supposed to be the great great grandfathers wife and son, then there is a Nuka Cola Bottle in 1944/45.

At 21:40 I feel that the founding date of sunset sarsaparilla is actually the founding date of the saloon, which is a possibility that was missed out in this theory

i think it is pretty clear (in my mind at least) that they were going for festus being more than he seemed as a sort of brain for the other robots which would control them and give them more complex tasks and instructions (think fallout 4 nukaworld star-control) and that is how he took over delivery jobs by either allowing other robots to drive or even maybe remotely controlling the trucks themselves

There used to be a glitch with Scorpion gulch. You can find one cap on the man there. If you leave and fast travel in again it spawns again and again etc. Can save a lot of hunting for them.

I played a very little bit of the first game but these lore vids of the games are great. I think this is the 6th one I've watched at night after climbing in bed and sparking up a J. The vids are very chill and if I fall asleep with the playlist on they're all mostly the same vol level with not big vol blasts to wake us or the dog up(which wakes me up). It's hard to find stuff like that to put on at night. And I need something playing. Usually an audiobook of a book I know really well so I don't try to really listen to intently. Chill stuff like that are some of the best ways to fall asleep for me.

21:45 Good remark on Stating General Atomics did the Mr Handy robot series, however, according to the lore, mr Handy were made in PARTNERSHIP between General Atomics and RobCo, General Atomics being the manufacturer while Robco provided the programmation for the robots of most General Atomics products, including even Liberty Prime.

The "New Toy" couldn't have been Festus, because the "New Toy" is part of the distribution network. Festus is immobile. With it being a Cowboy Robot, it has to be Victor. Victor was made by RobCo, after all.

I always get approached by Malcolm immediately after picking up the blue star cap in Jenny's Skydiving just outside of Goodsprings. The "New-fangled" robot the guy is talking about could have been an Assaultron, even though those weren't a thing until Fallout 4.

Speaking on the out of order sign on the wall. I would theorize that there was a vending machine there at one point, but due to all the human workers being replaced it would have been removed.

The end results is she turned hostile.

Why do you think Obsidian broke more lore than both FO3 and FO4? Hell, the director of New Vegas was the director of the first two games. If anything, Bethesda is breaking more lore than Obsidian ever did.

Another option with Jacklyn is say you have no idea, and then pickpocket the 9 bottle caps out of her... she will keep walking for a while but she will eventually realise that you stole them. But that gives you the option to get the caps whiout killing her.

As someone who has no idea how to develop games, I can't imagine how long it took to code Jacklyn's various reactions. God bless game developers.

Some people accuse video games of corrupting the youth... but we have Oxhorn here turning every side quest into a morality tale. This guy has me tearing up about random characters in games I don't even play.

Creepy game idea for those who killed Malcohm to get extra star caps: After the quest Festus seems to have powered down forever... but as Courier 6 turns to leave, they hear a loud noise behind them as the lights suddenly go out, making the lobby pitch black. When the lights turn back on and Courier 6 looks behind them for the source of the noise, Festus is gone and the front of his stand now lays open, revealing a hollow cavity large enough to hide the lower half of fully grown adult. The courier then turns to leave but... the doors suddenly become locked and inaccessible, forcing the courier to try and find another way out. As they wonder through the factory once more, they find doors that they had once opened now locked and the only path open to them is the path to the cargo bay. Inside, they find a broken protectron robot they had shot down is now missing one of its arms and a Mr. Handy is missing a buzz-saw. Upon finishing this investigation the lights begin to flicker once more and another heavy loud noise, the sound of metal feet slowly walking in the distance can be heard coming to where the courier stands, then all goes quiet and the lights turn back on. The Courier goes to investigate the exit but finds this door is now locked as well. Upon investigating the door, they suddenly hear a metallic, haunting, yet familiar voice. "Yee-haw pardner!" Turning around, they find... Festus standing at the entrance of cargo room, fully standing with thin but strong looking legs, a protectron laser arm replacing his once broken one, and in his other hand, a Mr. Handy Buzz-saw. Festus's head is tilted to the side, his robotic eyes aglow and staring at courier with an air of hostility about it. Before the courier can think, Festus lunges forward at the speed of a Deathclaw whipping his buzz-saw at the courier with immense speed. Upon entering battle the courier finds that Festus is hard to damage, their bullets and lasers barely doing any damage to the suddenly crazed cowboy robot. The courier is forced to run, all the while being shot at and hacked at by Festus until they reach the room with Allan Mark's body. Once inside the doors slam shut behind them. Festus can be heard behind the door "Your dirty deeds have been exposed pardner. You got blood all over your hands just like your cell mate and now like your cell mate, it is up to me to uphold my job as sheriff and put you where you belong." The courier hears the sounds of the doors sealing shut, and they are now trapped much like Allan Marks may have been. It was Festus that had trapped Allan Marks inside that room, letting him die a slow and horrible death. And now he is trying to do the same thing to the courier.

It's possible that the company really was founded in 1918 while the drink itself wasn't created until after Nuka-Cola came into being. Using a real world example, the NES - Nintendo's first video game system - was created in 1984, but the company itself started in 1889. So, Nintendo - really old, *the* Nintendo - not so old.

I actually completed this but and Festus was still functional afterwards and I get the point of this was supposed to be that the prize was very disappointing but after you do this Quest you walk away with 1500 caps and a unique weapon I'd say that's a pretty good prize

Here’s what I think about Festus. I do think that he was the delivery driver, and that he originally may have had a truck to suit him specifically, him not needing legs since his own little computer could regulate how much gas the truck gets to control it’s speed, probably the same with the steering wheel. Seeing as how the games take place in the future, I find it more likely. It was probably after a lot of company fighting happened that everyone decided to convert Festus from a truck driving robot to a consumer animatronic by removing him from his original truck base and mounting him in the new little saloon base he has as an animatronic, which could have potentially been done by Robco as ordered by the higher-ups at Sunset Sarsaparilla. That way people could have their jobs back and everything could be resolved, but as soon as this happened, the bombs fell and nobody really had time to document such on a terminal, or the info about this change is on the destroyed terminals. Just my theory on this. Or, like you said, the actual driver robot was just cut from the game.
