Redd Foxx was the funniest person I've ever spent time with. I worked at Sam's Town (casino in vegas) in the 80's and he came EVERY night after his show at the Hacienda. Nicest,funniest person I've ever hung around. The man NEVER met a stranger and he NEVER treated anyone less than his equal.

Interesting that Redd Foxx would make jokes about Carroll in O'Connor. It was at this time (late 1973- early 1974). At this time O'Connor walked out on "All in the Family". He wanted a larger dressing room , among other things. Shortly thereafter, Foxx walked out on "Sanford and Son" for the same reasons .

@retroguy9494 Жыл бұрын
@@williamlacentra2808 Well, I can only answer you ONE way. As a disabled gay man, I'm not offended at all. Why? Granted I was a kid when these aired and I watched them with my parents. But looking back, I'm not offended in any way. I can tell the difference between humor that was not meant to actually hurt or offend people but just to be funny and make light of things compared to today. Today when people make comments they MEAN it to hurt. They MEAN it to put people down. Its done expressly for that purpose and NOT to be funny. I can tell the difference. In addition, you have to realize that this generation did that to also bring to societies attention to the problems within itself. By poking fun, they were actually defending groups by making social statements through comedy. Plus to show it wasn't meant to be hurtful they poked fun at each other as well as themselves. Many of these men were very supportive of minorities. Even raised money for social causes. Because they were aware of their OWN shortcomings. There is a somewhat famous true story about Sammy Davis Jr. He was playing golf with Jack Benny and Benny asked him 'what is your handicap.' Davis replied 'Handicap? You want to talk about handicap....I'm a one eyed n****r Jew....it doesn't get much more handicapped than THAT!' So you see, even though it was a joke, it was meant to bring this kind of social awareness to the forefront. Which is why I cannot be offended by that generation.

You have to bear one thing in mind. In 1973, to most of the general public, they were one in the same. All in the Family was such a popular show, people had trouble distinguishing between the actor and the character. The same was true with Jean Stapleton/Edith. So to make it funnier, I suppose they more roasted Bunker than O'Connor. Plus, as these were friends of his from Hollywood and they KNEW he was actually one of the most liberal actors in Hollywood, it made it funnier for THEM.

The character of Archie Bunker was intended by “All In The Family” creator Norman Lear to highlight the ridiculousness and ignorance of racism & all forms of bigotry. An unintended consequence, much regretted by Lear and Carroll O’Connor was that Archie became a folk hero to actual racists, bigots and homophobes.

If anything can break the focus on racial bull shite itll be comedy and music. These guys truly loved each other. They realize there are millions of reasons to hate somebody. Close your eyes and have a 5 min conversation with a total stranger. I generally want to stab my ears out with ice picks after 2 mins but color is no where near the list of reasons why. Ive never understood it. My dad was a r&b musician. And a skinny white guy. I was around his friends who were my family. Black gospel churches soul food. That was not strange. It was life. When schools started bussing kids from my neighborhood school one block away to a predominantly black neighborhood and school i couldnt figure out why i was hated or why kids are trying to take my lunch money when id gladly share it. My friends getting beat up everyday at lunch time. For no reason. People of every color realized quick youre not taking anything from me while im still alive and not beating on my friends. With a genius iq i had the damndest time understanding why this was happening. Never understood and still dont. I blame it on ignorance. Stupidity and hatred dont have a race color or creed. My ancestry consisting of german jews and american indians and some mick thrown in i say my folks got a pretty deal. Im not trying to rank horrible historical events but mustard gas slavery of jews having your land taken while being infected with diseases that literally wiped out entire tribes of indians and the bullets helped too kind of sucked. But i dont go around hating folks that had nothing to do with the actions of their ancestors. I can promise you that if Father Rabbi Geronimo Mc Gillis came at me in vicious manner i wouldnt hesitate to play cowboys and indians with him.

Actually what REALLY happened to Cass was that she died of left sided heart failure. This was brought on in large part by her repeated crash dieting to try to lose weight. She did NOT choke on food as has been rumored for years and there were no drugs found in her system.

My son has done it for most of his life. When he became an adult he started doing it with guys at work. He is very loving and kind but not politically correct at all. He is hilarious. My son's humor is infectious and his unwillingness to stick to PC culture is also infectious. My son is white he has had friends from all the colors in the spectrum. He has told some jokes that would have other young people his age passing out. Well young college kids that are trained that any people darker than themselves are going to be offended by a joke. He somehow never crosses a line. It's all in good fun and he lets people poke fun at him. His friends have been genuine friends and he's never changed himself to fit in a crowd base tomorrow on what he thinks others act like through stereotypes. No he makes fun of stereotypes and his friends have a blast doing it with him. They are some of the most genuine friendships I've ever seen. These young men of all colors called each other brothers. Not in the cliche way that some people say it but Brothers. They would poke fun all day but at the end of the day if one needed financial help, a ride, the ear, they would all be there for each other. They are all there for each other. I was never PC myself and I really was never like anyone else. Yet at times I even thought my son might be going too far. So he asked his friends one day. Well a couple of his friends one day that happened to be black. He asked them what's going too far. They said just don't call us the n word. I worked with him at the time and for the rest of the day he was going around saying every n word but the n word. It seems so silly but he had them laughing at the stupidity of it all. I mean he was walking home with one of his black coworkers and it was still dark out. I know what happened because his friend told me while laughing his butt off. I guess my son was pretending he couldn't find him in the dark told him to smile. His friend laughed and shrugged It off. That wasn't the funny part though. The funny part was when it got light out my son pretended to hide in the sunlight. There are so many things that these guys said to each other and some not as likely humored as the ones I mentioned. They literally asked my son to poke fun. Every time he did it gave them an opening to say something themselves. I should say my son's because none of them were really PC this one just happens to be the funniest. None of my sons have ever played the PC game or acted like any person is particularly special or particularly sensitive. I taught them not to make jokes like that hidden in the house. I taught them if you're going to say something say it out loud. Like I said it made them and their friends closer. It wasn't always joking but the humor melted away the moronic stereotypes. Oh yeah they had some good ones about white people. I played the wrong one time by carrying salt and pepper in my bag.... You know seasoning. You should have seen what kind of crap the middle one did when a comment would come out of somebody's mouth like.... White People are crazy. He would do and does something that has people wondering but laughing. I don't remember what it was but it came out of some woman's mouth at work one day. We were all outside on break and he took off his shoes, socks, coat, and flopped himself in the snow making snow angels. She looked at him like white people are crazy but she was laughing. "Boy you're crazy put your shoes back on."she was a cool lady. She just said something stupid for a minutes. Laughter is a great remedy.

Did anyone notice that the only person who did NOT smile when being introduced in the beginning of the show was the head of CBS Television? In fact, it looks like he was making a nasty face. Typical corporate SOB. Shows how little has changed in 50 years. BTW, Gene Kelly's rug looks pretty good here! LOL
