In this 3ABN-produced program, Ryan Day presents the first of a two-part series on what the Bible teaches about death. What happens when we die? Do humans have a soul that returns to God? What is the “ spirit” that God put within us? Can our departed loved ones visit us? What did Jesus mean when he likened death unto sleep? If we understand how God brought humans into the world, we can understand the reverse process of how humans go out of this world. This foundational teaching prepares the way for part-two when Ryan challenges popular beliefs that contradict what the Bible teaches about death.

Yes I hear people say “don’t Judge me” but yet they had already judged these people by saying they are in heaven! Maybe the people wouldn’t be happy in heaven? God knows best and his reward is with him when he comes! And we all go together at the 1 st resurrection to meet him ( Jesus) in the air( Jesus doesn’t touch the earth) to be in heaven for a 1000 years!

I always thought it was symbolic, like when Cain killed Abel, his blood cried out from the ground. Well, we know blood can't cry out. It's a metaphor and the book of Revelation is full of symbolism and metaphors. Since the earthly sanctuary was a copy of the heavenly , there is an allusion to the altar of burnt offerings where the blood of the sacrifices was poured. The blood of those sacrifices was sprinkled around the altar, so also the blood of martyrs are symbolically poured at God's altar when,by remaining faithful to God and the testimony of Jesus they lost their lives. If they are really in heaven crying for vengeance, this hardly sounds like they are enjoying heaven. All this just my own understanding so whether you accept that or not is your choice.

Thank you very much for this clarification. The relationship between the spirit has been a cause of bitter contention even within the church of God. Ecclesiastes 12:7 appears to many as if the spirit which goes to heaven is alive. I am excited to watch the whole part 1 and 2.

@RyanDay777 Also a question on death (and resurrection) of Jesus Christ: How do you explain the verses where it is mentioned that God raised him up, versus His own statements that He has the power to lay down His life and take it up again. I want to learn more and understand how to harmonize these two together. Thanks! God bless you!

I've been to several funerals over the past twenty years. And although very few people, in my community, claim to be Christians, the funeral preachers always say the dead person went to heaven. So it isn't just a question of when the dead go to heaven, but it seems there's no difference in the destiny of the believer versus the non believer. I think the funeral preachers cause people to believe there is no need to be concerned about their salvation.

It’s been a minute, but I remember you saying that man IS a soul (body + spirit) but doesn’t HAVE a soul, But I saw this verse in 1 Kings 17:21-22 that seems to say the child had a soul, that it left him at death, and that it returned to him when Elijah revived him: “And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried unto the LORD, ad said, O LORD, my God, I pray thee, let this child’s soul come into him again.” “And the LORD heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived.” What say you?

Some Scriptures to consider… Genesis 2:7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. Body + Breath of life = living being Genesis 3:19 In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread Till you return to the ground, For out of it you were taken; For dust you are, And to dust you shall return.” The body returns to the dust, there is no immortal soul. Even though a believer sleeps in death until the resurrection the next conscious thought they have is the resurrection and being present with the Lord. 1 Corinthians 15:51-54 Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed- 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. 54 So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” See also 1 Thessalonians 4:15-17 (It’s clear that the believer isn’t given immortality until “the last trumpet” at the resurrection.
