Years ago, there was a format called Extended. What was it? Why did it exist? Will it ever come back? Let's head back to the past and talk about it!

I would heed you own stories warning for Modern itself. Horizon sets are basically making Modern a rotating format by introducing incredibly pushed cards that are blanking old standby staples. Putting stuff directly into Modern and bypassing Standard is, in my opinion, incredibly unhealthy for the format that has been championed as the "play your old cards" place that Legacy used to be before support dried up on it.

Modern was created with the premise that it had no reserve list cards, so card availability (and price) wouldn't become as high a barrier as they are in Legacy. But for that to work, WOTC needs to reprint the cards in a way that gets them to players. Instead, they only reprint the staples in packs that cost double the price of normal. Fast forward 10 years and they create Pioneer, a non rotating format with the premise that it had no reserve list cards, so card availability (and price) wouldn't become as high a barrier as they are in Modern. Bold prediction: prices for Pioneer staples will reach a very high level, cards will only be reprinted in super expensive boosters, the format will become inaccessible for price, and 10 years from now they will come out with Adversary format, a non rotating format with the premise that it had no reserve list cards, so card availability (and price) wouldn't become as high a barrier as they are in Pioneer. ..........

Extended was basically modern. The gameplay was great but Wizards did not support it. They kept it around to have something else to show when Standard sucked(always) but that was about it. I think someone watching this video with no background would get a very wrong idea.

To be honest the format I miss the most is block constructed, I loved doing "thematic" decks, and those would look so pretty with the new border treatment. Imagine, a full ninja deck, how awesome would it be ?

"what if we rotate this format MORE?!" History has proven this is never the right question

Now Modern rotates every two years, plus surprise rotations every so often. Powerful cards like Oko, Uro, and Companions aren't additions, they're surprise rotations.

It failed because it had literally the best and most diverse format circa 2002 and then wizards rotated it and killed it. Extended at the time was literally the best magic ever played.

Straight to modern sets (MH1&2 etc) have quite badly crushed my interest in Modern, since they introduced a 'soft rotation' to the format. I much preferred the slow trickle of cards into the format through standard, instead of this current "oh hey lets upend the format and get people to buy completely new decks if they want to stay competitive" or "hey look here's a card that does basically what an existing staple did, but this one is strictly better so your old card is now obsolete".

What a shocker. Wizards gave little to no support to a format and it stopped being played. How could this happen! Then the format they decided to focus on, and print cards into thrived. An even bigger shocker!

I'm in this video, I'm one of the judges in the front center of the huge line of judges near the end of video. That was defiantly at one of the GP: Las Vegas events, assuming the big one with 7,700 players. Essentially we had 4 separate GP's running simultaneously (each about 1,900 players), then on day 2, we squeezed the 4 GPs down to two separate flights each leading to their own top 8.

When I started, Extended was 'Double Standard', then Modern came around as the new place to play your old cards and not have to compete with Legacy to win prizes. It had a good long run and i loved it. Unfortunately since about War of the Spark, Modern is not that anymore, it really makes me sad to go play this 'place for rotated Standard cards' and see very few cards that went through Standard at any time. MH1 was a good thing, but if every card that was new to MH2 were banned, Modern would be a better place. The non-rotating format shouldn't be 70% cards that would be legal in a Double Standard number of years.

I wish there was a standard like format without rare or mythic cards, so I could experience those cool Limited interactions more often and had something to do with my draft chaff.

Extended rotating is what brought me into Legacy. I wanted to keep playing my Enchantress deck.

First Modern PT was a blast. It was also the last PT with public side events.

Extended used to be my favorite format. Pre-2005 rotation I did so well in Extended that my rating earned me GP byes, though I never was able to travel far enough to take advantage of it. After the 2005 rotation I still played for awhile but eventually fell off competitive play. I miss having a format that wide and open but not so prohibitively expensive like Modern has become.

I wish that Invasion, Odyssey, and Onslaught Blocks had been part of Modern. They currently live in a very weird place in MTG history, between Eras of the game.

As a newer mtg player I regret the loss of competitive play. So often I listen to these old players talk about when some great game happened. They know the decks and the players. I just don't know if we'll get a similar experience in the future. Great video Gavin it just made me have some weird nostalgia for a time I never got. Great video as always!

I'd love to see the old 7-year extended come back. Deckbuilding is my favorite part of magic and being able to have more formats up in the air to build for is always a positive in my book. Especially given the awkward position of standard lately it'd be nice to have another place for cards from new sets.
