Lucky Hank, starring Bob Odenkirk, premieres March 19 on AMC.
Season Four - Episode Thirteen: "Face Off"
Episode Description:
As Jesse faces police scrutiny for his comments to Andrea, Walt desperately plots to gain the upper-hand within his season-long game of wits with meth kingpin Gus.
Episode Overview:
As Walt tracks him down in the hospital waiting room to ask how their plan to kill Gus could have gone awry, Jesse is surprised when two detectives arrive to ask about the poison that is threatening the life of Andrea’s son Brock. Leaving Jesse to talk his way out of the sticky situation, Walt heads to Saul’s office where he finds his secretary Francesca frantically shredding anything that could link her boss to the drug ring. With Francesca demanding money in exchange for contacting Saul, Walt then heads home where he finds a pair of Gus’ hit men waiting. After using an elderly neighbor to distract them, he sneaks inside and recovers some cash from the crawl space hiding spot. Meanwhile, after calling Saul to intervene in the interrogation, Jesse decides to use what he knows about the feud with Tio Salamanca to draw Gus into a trap.
Because he hates Gus even more than he does Walt or Jesse, Tio agrees to help. Though the old man actually refuses say anything of value to the DEA, all Walt needs is for Gus to know that a meeting has taken place between Tio and Hank. So, unaware of what Walt has in store for him, Gus sends a henchman to make sure that Tio’s nursing home room isn’t under surveillance. Meanwhile, after learning that Brock is going to make it, Jesse is surprised to find that he’s been cleared of any suspicion in the poisoning. But before he can get back to the hospital room with the good news, he’s kidnapped by Gus’ thug and taken back to the lab where he’s forced continue working.
Once he’s been assured that the coast is clear, Gus heads inside the nursing home with plans to kill Tio. But before Gus and his sidekick can give him a lethal injection, Tio triggers a bomb that Walt rigged to his wheelchair, blowing the three of them to kingdom come. With Gus out of the way, all that’s left for Walt to do is destroy the superlab. Making his way inside, he dispatches the guards and, with Jesse’s help, turns the laundry into an inferno that destroys any evidence of their involvement in the drug ring. Finally, as Jesse heads off to reunite with Andrea, a victorious Walt is left to reunite with his family as he ponders his future.

I remember when I first saw this scene, and at 0:55 when Gus looks up & down at Hector, I thought for sure he would notice the bomb on the wheelchair. But it’s clear now Gus was so fueled by hate & revenge, he didn’t notice anything. Was just conjuring up his next insult. Brilliant storytelling

But when Gus realized why Hector was reefing on that bell so hard, he screamed in shock and backed away in a vain attempt to save himself. I don’t know what you mean by improvised. I watched a “making of “ that scene, and it took a week or two and some CGI to get it right. The makeup on Giancarlo Esposito took hours to put on and the act of him slowly walking out of the room, straightening his tie, the camera panning around with all the debris, the stunned nurses in the background, and him falling, took many takes to get it just right. I would love to see a story where this happen itd be so badass, Imagine the classical music still playing in the background as Gus slowly and calmly walked back to his car with just a few scratches, and as he sits down and while the police and ambulances can be heard in the distance he suddenly he has a epiphany about who set this up. And it cuts to Walter thinking he’s killed Gus

I havent' seen that many people praise Hector's actor for this. When people have a stroke and end up in a wheel chair, they are changed, unrecognizable. They're like a totally different individual. It's impressive and tragic. Having an actor nailing BOTH the cartel monster and the crippled dying man is fantastic.

@@Cheatsy1989 you don't sound like a guy who pays attention to the acting process. Hector doesn't have much lines in this show, he sits and rings a bell. Yet his facial expressions are on point, his stares are filled with emotions, he's got a strong presence. And the actor also nails those scenes before Hector got his stroke. So i'm sorry man, but no, he doesn't just sit and ring a bell. Be respectful.

Yeah I agree, he's a brilliant "facial actor" who clearly pays a lot of attention to detail in his own performance. The twitching around his mouth, the heightened intensity of his nasal breathing, and just the fact that you can read all of his emotions just from his eyes; all superbly acted

What impresses me the most is that the expolision was a single take but it took 19 takes for the Fring walk and fall. They transitioned between these two shots so well that it looked like a single shot. You really have to look for it at 2:06, there is a small piece of insulation in front of the couch that disappears, and only a small amount of smoke was added. This scene is more realistic than you realize...I'm older, I've been to war, and I've actually seen similar things like this happen. I found it incredible that someone could get half their body blown off and then act like nothing happened for the remaining few moments of their life. Their mind went into shock and didn't want to accept how bad the injury was.

Yeah, it is a common reaction when a sudden traumatic accident happens. To act like nothing happened, which makes no sense to other peoples who does not 'in' the situation. The act can be a sign of denying or total confusion, and an effort of return to normality.

Irl, with some major brain injures people will not be able to recognize or appropriately respond to the injury (like call for help), but will revert to habitual movements. Probably not from psychological shock, but more from neurological impairment. Sadly there was a man shot in his bed at night with massive brain injury, who then got up, turned off his alarm, put on his robe, got the paper off the doorstep, turned off the porch light, and multiple other “get ready for work”tasks before dying. It initially confused the timeline as police (not unreasonably) thought he must have been shot after all that, but multiple other pieces of evidence showed he was shot before (other similar cases as well).

Hector is the one man Gus is truly afraid of, hence why he put so much effort into crippling the man and making him literaly (seemingly) unable to do anything. So when despite everything, Hector found a way to take back control, Gus felt that same fear he felt all the way back in mexico all those years ago.

Fun fact: this whole scene was improvised. The stroke victim was actually having a mild stroke that cause some props in the scene to create a pretty devastating explosion. When the explosion went off it really did blow off parts of the actors body & but the director felt it was such a good take they had to keep it.

In illegal businesses being a rat is a thing you don't want to be. Your own people are going to kill you even if you did it for there own safety.

Although Gustavo never ratted, he did speak to the DEA often. He was even friends with DEA agents, had BBQ parties, feeding them all food from the restaurant when Hank was shot...keeping his enemies close, just like Hank said. So in a sense, he is being hypocritical considering how regularly he interacts with the DEA. Plus, he didn't really know* what Hector actually said to the DEA (just observed going into the building). If anything, Gus was assuming Hector ratted on him, figured he was the most likely person Hector would give up, considering his entire family/friends were murdered by Gus and his men. I get it though, Hector giving the appearance of talking to the DEA gives Gus enough of a reason and liability to kill him.

this scene is super well written. gus showing no signs of manners or respect because of hectors trip to the DEA , as well as gus' hesitation to injecting hector because hector finally made eye contact with him, as gus has been trying to get him to do since we first saw them together . just for hector to finally rule over gus. one of the best scenes in the whole series.

Hector has looked at Gus as well after his stroke and it led to Gus’ Suspicion of Eduardo being alive, leading to plans to counter Eduardo and leading to his defeat in ‘Better Call Saul’. Once again, you could discern that it means Hector only looks at Gus when he has the advantage. Hector would probably feel some more sense of defeat after figuring out Lalo had died, as in the meeting with Don Eladio and the twins nearing the finale, Hector states that Lalo is in hiding because of Gustavo, and thinks that he truly survived up until Gus says that the Salamanca lineage ends with him. i love writing this stuff cuz you just get to type for nothing and stretch it out so much lol
