Albert Serra's 'The Death of Louis XIV' opens March 31 at the Film Society of Lincoln Center: filmlinc.org/newreleases
The great Jean-Pierre Léaud, synonymous with French cinema for over half a century, delivers a majestic, career-capping performance as the longest-reigning French monarch during his final days. Albert Serra’s elegant, engrossing contemplation on death and its representation finds the extravagantly wigged Sun King slowly wasting away from gangrene in his bedchamber, surrounded by devoted servants, pets and a retinue of hopeless doctors. Filled with ravishing candlelit images and painstaking details gleaned from Saint-Simon’s memoirs and other historical texts, Louis XIV is as darkly funny as it is moving, revealing the absurdity of the rule-bound royal court, but even more so of death itself. A Cinema Guild release.

The Film Society of Lincoln Center is devoted to supporting the art and elevating the craft of cinema. Louis XIV's courtiers were not allowed to knock on his door. They had to grow a nail on their finger very long and scratch the door, so that he knew there was someone (a courtier) at the door. Talk about weird traditions.

At the court of King George III courtiers had to rattle the door handle rather than knocking. They weren't allowed to pass by an open door if a member of the Royal Family was in the room.

It is a slow burning type of film, and filmed in only 2 and a half weeks, you'd see only mostly the bed chamber, so don't expect glamour. With an excellent casts, it captures the intensity and suffering of this great King of France in his last days. Reminds us all that we are all human and we cannot escape death, no one!

Wow!!!!! Now I must see this film. Although there is a way to live forever which was believed by our ancestors which was reach immortality through a legacy. Maybe not physically live forever but always remembered. This is something that only a few got to achieve, like Louis XIV, Abraham Lincoln, John Adams, El Caesar, Adolf Hitler, Winston Churchill. These people did something in earth that impacted the world in some way that they reach immortality as long as the sun should rise and there’s people to remember them!

included in my personal list of most challenging to watch but to be fair, the movie is about the slow death of Louis XIV and i think Albert Serra has perfectly captured that premise

A wasting away. Clock ticking, birds singing, lights changing slightly from day to night. ...until the final redemption. Atmospheric and uneventful. I like it. I find the figure and circumstances of the charlatan, who will be a scapegoat and potential perpetrator, very interesting.

I have to admit although the concept at first seems depressing,it seems a rather intreging concept and one not explored enoff. It would be interesting to se a mortal ,vunaerable sun king .........…...a human, a man ,rather than the adulerous ,vain , magnificent tyrant we are used to seeing. All men are equil before God at the hour of death.

The soon-to-be Louis XV. Don't read further if you are easily offended. I imagine Louis XIV asking his great-grandson what is his goal in life, and the boy replies "to have the record of the largest number of mistresses by any King of France." The old man is of course shocked, but on some reflection he sighs and says, "well, at least you have ambition, which is more than your grandfather the Grand Dauphin possessed."

@@willsorry In fairness to Louis XVI, his grandfather's (King Louis XV) outrageously overindulgent lifestyle and the aristocracy's privilege of not paying taxes meant France was already in dire financial trouble when Louis XVI took the throne. We should also note that if it were not for Louis XVI's massive financial assistance to the American revolutionaries, the USA would likely have never won their independence from the British. Unfortunately, that also contributed to France's economic crisis and ultimately led to France's own revolution.

I have no idea why this is getting highly rated reviews. The whole film is essentially royal advisors catering to a bed ridden monarch for two hours. I can handle films with little dialogue but the visuals of this film are confined to two or three rooms. Ever sat round the hospital bed of a dying relative? Imagine that, but everyone is dressed as French aristocracy, the decor is fancier, and it isn't actually your grandmother who's having the life slowly snuffed out of her. I assume there's themes of the shared mortality of all men, be they paupers or kings, the reaction we have to older people dying and how powerless we are to assuage an old fella who's resigned to his fate, yada yada yada. But Jesus this is a dull movie. Cannot stress this enough.

It attaches to Aristotle units of Time, Space and Action; that's why it's simple and minimalistic. Serra is trying to emulate Dreyer's sober style of filmmaking (watch Ordet from Dreyer). In Serra's words: this film is about how the mortality is everywhere even in Louis XIV who considered himself as inmortal and omnipotent. This film is one of the greatest of the century. You just need to watch the beautiful of the simplicity
