I've noticed a long time ago that that nobody watches "movie review" uploads on KZfaq anymore, but people keep making them. People don't care about other people's opinion of a film, they want to see creators make original content based around movies they already love. They want to get deeper into the fandom of their favorite stuff. This is why Horror History, Kill Count, iceberg content, retrospective, etc are popular and "movie review" is kinda dead.

Wow I couldn’t of said it better myself! I think there’s a lot more opportunity for film lovers to share there work/opinions with others thanks to social media and end up growing a fan base. I agree I do think that film reviews aren’t as popular now unless it’s a film that has just come out and has some sort of controversy / hype about it. I do love those videos that are more like a breakdown instead of a “review” Thank you so much for your feedback ☺️

Critics are great. Websites that gather a bunch of critic reviews and just spit out a number are bad. That’s meaningless.

Definitely I think criticism about movies are good but critics may give it a low rating on a specific point like the accuracy to the year if it’s let’s say a period drama but they aren’t saying other things like the story ex. Are bad but because the reviews get add together the movie gets a low score. Like you said it would be better if people focused on the individual reviews instead of an overall score. Thank you so much for your comment ☺️

As a writer in both the gaming and film/TV space, I can say that while reviews can occasionally give you an idea of what a piece of media is about, the only way to know for sure if you like it or not is to check it out yourself. You're absolutely correct that the eye that critics, general audiences, and existing fans have of an IP all look for something different in a release. Sometimes opinions sync up or clash, but I don't think critical or public reception should considerably influence anybody's willingness to make up their own mind. Regardless of whether you think something slaps or sucks, what's important is that you had your own unique experience with it. Great vid by the way!

Thank you so much! I’m so glad you liked the video I find it so interesting when seeing the clash between peoples opinions. I think your 100% correct the only way to know if you like a film is to watch it for yourself even though I think sometimes your outlook on the film can be tinted if you’ve already seen other’s opinions on the said film. Thank you so much for your feedback I love hearing from actual writers for film/tv ! 😊😆

I was born in 1980, Critics v. Audience has been around all my life, and you just accepted that sometimes there were differences in the scores. Without doing any research, the discrepancy feels like it is at an all-time high. Sort all the Marvel and DC movies by Critics score and get a good laugh.

It's a Wonderful Life was a failure in the critics eyes, as was The Thing. Two films with a level of love that often finds them ranked in top 100 of all time. Just goes to show critics and nitpickers overlap, to say nothing of the paid review shills we call critics today.

unless both the audience and the critics say it bad, I usually watch a movie based of the actors/directors/plot. But, I'll still risk it sometimes if the film is interesting enough. one thing for sure ratings do for me is help gauge my expectations, the higher the ratings, the higher expectations. Another thing is specific reviewers like Chris Stuckmann I normally agree with most of time, so that helps me decide sometimes, if I'm on the fence anyways. Great video!

Having been a movie critic years ago, my observation based on what I see now is because of video sharing platforms like you tube , the floodgates have been open to a slew of ignoramus ideologues and know nothings who are unfit to review movies. Unfortunately there are now more amateurs pretending to be critics and reviewers and those of us who were and are educated professionals who know what we are doing are few in number. Sad situation.

If someone ask me what kind of movies I enjoy, I am usually lost for words. It always depends on my mood. When I go watch a movie with my girls, yes, its usually something romantic or funny. When I go with my partner or my brother, its mostly action based, historic or comic book related (or was until they turned out to become boring) and when I am by myself I prefer TV shows with long story and character development and I can enjoy all kinds of Genres. And weirdly, I enjoy them all. If someone ask me what is my favorite movie now I list a dozen or more, all different genres. It depends on my mood. So critics never matter to me. I remember going to the theater with a group of friends to watch 300. Everyone loved it, I didn't. I found it silly and goofy and rather childish. But I was glad everyone else liked it. It simply wasn't a movie for me. Fair enough. I still has a right to exist even though I didn't enjoy it. And I think that's what often gets forgotten in the discussion about criticism. The one thing I enjoyed from the movie was the art style. The way it was filmed and how they used the lights and camera angles. It kinda was an eye opener for me when it comes to criticism. And I think people and critics focus too much one one aspect of a movie and forget the rest
@AbbieRee
@AbbieRee 7 ай бұрын
I think “what’s your favourite type of movie?” Is one of the hardest questions to answer because there’s so many ones I like! But I definitely do the same as you it definitely depends on who I’m watching it with. If I’m watching it with my mum it’s normally quite a funny chill film but if I’m watching something with more family members it’s normally something a little deeper and if I’m by myself I’ll just watch KZfaq 😆

I need to add to the conversation, I have always been of the mindset that films shout be judged psychologically than holistically. Let me explain, The movie Moonlight can be judged as a blackfilm, as a gay film, as a poverty film, as a drug film and as a mimai film. 100% of the times film critics judged the film as a monolith with these scores without keeping in mind the target audience or how the film is better suited towards. A permanent final score robs the film of it's dimensions and works as a dictatorship, the limits it's reach and potential cult base. People who have ADHD or simply don't like heavy dialogue or character development are treated as second class citizens , when you should encourage films that reach out to these people. It is a market after all and well done variety has a place especially when it comes to keeping the art form alive and most importantly criticism should be used as a reverse democracy to reach out to those with mentalities that would appeal to the most niche to the most casual and the rating needs to be removed from a number scoring system and converted to score system statement based on people who SHOULD be watching that film

@@AbbieRee The director Emma Tammi did have 1 movie and combined 12 episodes in two series under their belt before the FNaF movie but they were medicore so I'm not surprised this one wasn't a masterpiece. The problem with critics is that they are way too biased towards "the message" and will rate any movie above 70% so long the movie was made for modern audiences (the movie examples you gave fit this perfectly) I always decide whether or not I want to watch a movie based on the viewer score and never the critic score as I'm sure most viewers will share my expectations. Are critics needed? Yes but maybe not the faceless critics that hide behind a brand name and more so movie critics with a face and a voice, that way, when you are listening to their opinion on a certain movie you know it's THEIR own opinion and not some vague opinion that will always favor the movie.
@AbbieRee

I agree 100% I think the critics can miss the “entertainment value” of the film and just jump straight to the message like you said! I do exactly the same as you when it comes to watching a film I tend to check the audience score more than the critics, I think the audience score can give you more of a accurate review depending on why you want to watch the film. Hey, good video! I agree with you in spirit, _however..._ Unfortunately, the critics today don't do the job exactly in the way you described. The academic ones tend to follow a type of film analysis based on postmodernist deconstruction, which ends up being the opposite of an "objective" criticism - in fact, most of them don't even believe in objectivity. The journalists, on the other hand, are currently totally uninterested in the things you mentioned: pace, videography, story, acting, etc. Rather, they are way more concerned with the representantion of identity groups and other things tied to a very specific political view. In other words, the journalist critics became, for the most part, ideologues. There are two problems related to this. First, since the public at large has a wide array of different political views (which is a natural thing), the narrowness of the perspective that is almost the only one employed by the critics alienate a large part of the public. Second, those important aspects of story, character development, pacing, photography, etc - the technical aspects -, are sidelined and ignored, which makes the analyses shallow. I'm saying this having just arrived home after a film session in the university that I teach at (I'm a professor of physics), where we watched and then I lead an informal discussion about Ingmar Bergman's classic film _Wild Strawberries._ I love movies. Unfortunately, most of the critics today don't. There are very few Pauline Kaels or Roger Eberts out there.

The more media I see review scores for, the more arbitrary scores between critics and audiences become. I find that tracking one or two critics that have similar taste to myself allows me to better judge if something is worth watching or not, because the user/critic scores can be strongly impacted by the communities it came from, such as FNAF's love for the film or TLOU2's dogpiling from angry people mad at trans issues lol

I think you make a good point. But there's a misunderstanding of why TLoU2 was panned. The transman in the story, Lev, was widely praised as one of the best characters in the game even by conservative or otherwise very negative critics. Abbie was mocked for having an absurdly muscular body in a world where protein powder would be in short supply and some crude jokes were made on her behalf. The actual contention was about the way the story tried to crudely force you to sympathize with a character who had just sadistically murdered a beloved character in cold blood in front of you and the abandonment of exploring the worlds story in favor of a more basic revenge plot. It being framed as 'People just hate it because they are bigots' is just how defenders of the game deflected actual criticism of the story, however deserved or not said critique was. Certainly bigots made a lot of noise but were largely a minority of the actual critics.

I still dont get it for some films. Captain Marvel is an objectively bad film even by academic metrics. I guess it's score is inflated by the "impact on society" part. But that makes wonder if there is any value in their wark if the recommendation of the critic has no bearing on the enjoyment of the viewer. But i suppose superhero films are an anomaly.

I definitely think that with the captain marvel film comes under the modernisation of female characters in power ( I'm looking to do a video on this! ) and because of that it could like you said be more of a "impact on society" type of film and the score could get be higher up because of this? but I guess we could never fully understand :) Thank you so much for watching,I love hearing your opinions.

Rotten Tomatoes is not exactly a great source for understanding film. And you could definitely find the inverse disparity - critics rating highly but audiences not enjoying a film. Overall though, you disregard scores rated 1 or 10 because they are going to be people trying to correct the rating because they're overly emotional. The audience score is always less trustworthy because their rating won't affect their reputation or career.

Critics look for art, audience score are often based on people thinking about entertainment.

I'll be honest, I think critics GENERALLY have a better take on movie reviews than audiences. However, if a movie has a political edge to it then I don't trust it. FNAF is a bad movie. Simple as that. The Mario Movie isn't good. Simple as that. The issue is that movies are actually pandering even harder than ever to fan demands so they are making movies that make sense to the fans but give nothing more to anyone outside of their buble.

I do agree I think critic’s definitely can tell what a “good movie” is. But I do believe that if you like a film that’s not a “good movie” according to critics that there’s nothing wrong with that. ☺️

I feel like the disconnect between critics and the average viewer comes down to critics feeling like they are this exclusive club of mostly college educated pretentious people who over analyze and overthink simple dumb movies that are just meant to entertain or serve as some dumb fan service like the fnaf movie. The critic takes their job too seriously and because of this they find simple plots and stories uninteresting because they don’t have to go digging for deeper and more complex meaning. They want to act like every movie should be a super deep narrative about society or something. Not to mention that modern day college educated individuals have a socialist leaning world view where everything is explained through the power dynamic of the oppressed and the oppressor. This tends to explain how every year you get Oscar winning best pictures that almost nobody has seen or even heard of. TLDR: Critics come off as pretentious snobs, because sometimes movies just aren’t that deep

You’ve just explained what I couldn’t! This is exactly what I think. I do believe that critics do so their job but I think that the critics score can be too focused on and if it’s got a bad score people just assume it’s a “bad movie” when that isn’t necessarily the case it may not be the next Hollywood changing movie but it may entertain hundreds everywhere! Thank you so much for your feedback ☺️
