No table saw? NO PROBLEM...
For years, I've had a 3 hp cabinet saw with a huge fence and wing. It's been a good run but it's time for it to go. With my shop moving more toward hand tool woodworking and specifically Japanese hand tools over the past three years, floor space and room to work is my priority over a high powered spinning cutting device. Enter, the bandsaw. Shout out to ‪@MichaelAlm‬ for taking my phone calls about how to slap this thing together and ‪@bentswoodworking‬ for making a real step by step video on assembly so I didn't have to.

Good on you! After a 20 year woodworking hiatus (career + kids), I’m reconstituting my shop. Looking back, what I really enjoy about woodworking is hand tool work, not setting up machines that would like to eat my fingers. So I’m doing the same thing. Selling my table saw and keeping the bandsaw. Jury is out on whether I also sell the thickness planer. (I’m getting pretty good at dimensioning by hand.) I think too many hobbyist woodworkers make the mistake of setting up like they are running a production shop. We aren’t. It’s a hobby. If the process is more enjoyable with hand tools, but takes longer (sometimes it’s faster!), we should do that. It also makes it easier to work in the evenings without bothering the neighbors (except when you chop mortises ;) )

Thickness planer feels indispensable for me just because I get real lazy after doing the one face and edge. 😂 maybe I’ll make a flip cart for it with my lathe though so I can stop using that elementary school AV cart.

Congrats on the change. I know we talked about this idea briefly and I like your approach, which was basically that nothing has to be permanent. If you feel you need a table saw again, well, you can get another one if the time comes, but for now, on your current trajectory it wasn’t justifying its footprint.

Makes total sense. In (hopefully) 20-30 years, I'll have to compress my shop into a spare bedroom of elder housing, and I won't be able to run motors at all. If I want to continue to make at least a few things, hand tools will be the only option. I don't have the skills yet, hoping I can learn from your journey.

Nice looking saw man. I’m interested in hearing how you like it. Sounds like it was priced just right!
@CowDogCraftWorks
@CowDogCraftWorks Жыл бұрын
Absolutely. Free is an excellent price. So my instant impressions are: it is definitely not lacking for power. Bearing guides below the table are a little bit of a nightmare to adjust. Luckily I have tiny hands but I can’t imagine someone like you with big mitts having a good time with that. As far as blades I originally had the 1 1/4 resaw king from laguna on there. Felt a little wide so I think a 1” blade is probably the biggest that should go on there. I’ve also got a 3/8 for more curves. Dust collection is interesting… it has two ports and you can shut off one if you don’t have the multiple hoses. I chose the one under the table and should have gone for the way bottom. Overall a very nice machine but it’s definitely not the most perfect.
@juswoodshop
@juswoodshop Жыл бұрын
@@CowDogCraftWorks I’ve never had much luck with DC on the BS. If nothing else the bottom port extends the period between cleaning the bottom cabinet out. Those resaw kings are beasts. I just ordered a second one and will send my old one for sharpening. I also settled on the 1”. Have fun with it!
@CowDogCraftWorks
@CowDogCraftWorks Жыл бұрын
Oh snap I didn’t realize you could send them out to get sharpened although that does make sense since they have carbide teeth. Do you do it with someone local?
@juswoodshop

Just went through your videos list and I see no video on your Japanese saws. Sure, one was making a handle for a Ryoba, but you seem to have a really nice collection. Please let me know which makes and models you have? I recognize ZSaws(3) and do you have Nakayas? I'm in the process of buying 5-7 of them now, so I'm really interested. TX
@CowDogCraftWorks
@CowDogCraftWorks Жыл бұрын
There’s a bunch and I’ve got more on the way… various ryoba for softwood and hardwood… a rough kataba that is probably about 310 mm… a softwood carpenters ryoba that’s 270 mm with madonoko gullet teeth… a maebiki from pre WW2… I just got a yataki hardwood ryoba at 270 mm as well. I may do another video and highlight some of my more unique and rare tools with a shop tour. Too much to type.

@@CowDogCraftWorks I am curious as to how you know these names and then, equally importantly, through which source you get them. Though I spend quite some time educating myself on the saws, I havent heard of a Yataki for example. I'd love to join the ranks!
