The reason why I like ICO is because it feels like I'm fighting against real soldiers and not some laser accurate terminators. I can actually supress somebody with a machinegun and not get quick-peaked from around the corner. I like it because it promotes and forces you to play as a regular soldier and not a commando who can handle his gun perfectly and fire accurately regardless of circumstances. Like legit, getting sniped half the time from 150m with an AK because weapon sway doesn't exist was frustrating. The update even made my friends consider playing the game because "I can finally peak and move from cover to cover and not get slapped each time I even think of leaving my corner". To sum up, ICO made it less "arcade" and more team-based.

On a serious note now that I watched the video, I’ve been playing nothing but squad. I think adding some different guns to factions would shake it up a lot. Simply using different era weapons would be awesome. Maybe even some older styled maps.

Bigger number doesn’t necessarily mean better game. - Game quality has DRASTICALLY declined since ICO came out. - Player skill feels like it’s either gone way down or at the very least a crutch was removed. - Players typically just bunker down instead of trying to push, leading to either slogs at one point that never move, or only one team attacking. It’s even worse when armor is involved as AT no longer migrates to handle it. - Trying to get other squads and players to cooperate is like pulling teeth. I don’t think the game is necessarily in a better place just because the numbers are higher. We’ve just accepted that this is the game now.

I haven’t played squad in a few months. 6-9 months to be honest. I recently got back on. I feel like the quality of players has really gone down hill. SL’s not knowing what to do. Armor rushing in and wasting 20 tickets. Whole team pushing, no defense. Bad FOB locations if any FOB’s at all. No communication in squad chat….. Just not the same. 1 team rolls the other 90% of the time. 1 man armor squad. Seen those alot past few days. 😅

I said this to a guy in-game one time, that the way I used to play Squad pre-ICO was essentially the exact way the devs wanted the ICO to affect the rest of the playerbase. Whenever I would be in a squad or squad lead, I would always take things a bit slower or hold areas, and so when things slowed down it became the pace I actually liked. I haven't played in a while though because I've been rather busy, but seeing more content added all the time means there's more to enjoy when I have that time.

Nah this is bad take, I was in the infantry and I can assure you there is no way that any soldier has that much noodle arms. I legit cannot engage a target 10 meters away because of how much damn sway there is when you scope in. All you can do is hipfire and pray or scope in and pray that you don't get shot while you wait for your newborn arms to stabilize the gun. It has made the gunplay so much worse.

Im an old time project reality fan and ICO legit made me come back. I originally had like 250 hours pre ICO over the span of about 3 years, but now with the ICO released im now close to 1000 hours. ICO just feels so much into the right direction squad was originally envisioned to be.

Project Reality was EVERYTHING. Mutturah City- when you could chopper a squad onto the high mountain and then paint the laser on vehicles coming in........and the COBRA pilot (if he was good) would dive STRAIGH DOWN from the heavens and drop a JDAM on the painted vehicle. IT WAS AMAZING.

With veterans leaving and stopping to lead squads. I guess it is my time to shine. I always lead squads involuntarily and no matter if we lost or won, we always had the most points and held or attacked key points. I was the one who engaged in the command channel and forced them to communicate. I was praised by my squad members. I guess it is time to take SL much more often.

Numbers are up because Galactic contention mod returned and has about 5 servers including partners = about 500 people playing and then you have Global escalation servers also which are 4-5 also with another couple hundred people and both with tweaked ICO// there're thousands of players on modded squad

Influx of (new) players doesn't take away that Squad isn't anything like what it was "suppose" to be, i.e. predecessor of Project Reality. The moment Squad did go mainstream it went downstream. Just because thousands of people play something doesn't mean it is good. Most have a herd-mindset, and will follow someone that jumps of a bridge or tell them to...

I'm torn on the ICO debate. It is fun and seems to work well, at first I thought the suppression and sway were a bit on the overzealous side, but it seems that's been toned down a bit in the most recent playtest and felt like a good medium. The problem for me, and I feel like it's the same for a lot of the long time veterans, is simply that it's so different. We've put thousands of hours into a game that we have loved for years, and now it plays like an entirely different game. It was inevitable that a lot of people were going to be unhappy with it regardless of the quality of the overhaul, simply because what we've loved and gotten used to has changed. I still regularly play Squad, but it doesn't feel the same. Different isn't necessarily a bad thing, but a lot of people struggle with drastic change.

The main reason players came back to Squad imo is that there is nothing else like it, or that feels like it. So when you're sick of playing arcade-ish other games, you just come back and swallow that mouthfull of sh*t you've been trying to avoid since the update. (Looking at the veteran players I know and the communities I'm in) Now instead of playing 5-6+ games a day, I only play 1 or 2. I personnally think the ICO was a good idea that was pushed waaaay too far. What I hate about it tho is that it felt shoved down our throats, and it was not wanted. We've been asking for somethings like simple bug fixes and optimisation for the longest time, but instead we got an update that completely changed the gameplay we loved in a mosty unrealistic and unpleasant way, and even more bugs ! This is just adding more frustration to the frustration we already had. New content is coming to the game ? Great. Updates tweaking the ICO are coming ? Great. Bug fixes are on the way ? Great. I'll belive it all when I see it. The Squad game I knew and loved IS dead. I just hope the new one we have right now is going to get better, but looking back at the... 8? 9? past years, I have my doubts.

i think most of the people that hate the ico update dont understand the effectiveness of suppressive fire i cant tell u how many times ive pinned enemies down using the heavy machine gun class or on 50 cal while friendlies move the flank. teamwork teamwork teamwork. its a wonderful thing

ICO is a punishment system designed to balance better players with bad players. What they exactly want is that one good player cannot neutralize 9 bad players, that is, 1 squad. At the same time, they forgot that a good player is someone who is good at communication and team play. I'm not saying that ICO is completely bad, but such an effort to equalize players is quite unfair.

Hopefully armoured combat will head in a better direction like ICO. Adding air-defense, thermal and attack drones would be amazing.

You kiddin me? Everyone I actually met IN the game wasn't a fan of the gun update, they updated more than the the guns that made people come up. If the update was that well loved I'd see more people praising it and I wouldn't see about every mod making it pre gun update. You're kiddin yourself.

The literal only reason I haven't played Squad is because my computer's cooling system can't keep up anymore and I'm saving for a new rig lol

The ICO made the game more fun in my opinion. I love seeing the success the game is experiencing, from here I would like to see new factions (especially REDFOR), maps set in regions/biomes we haven’t explored yet, a player capacity increase, and new elements like shotguns, attack and scout helicopters and even player-controlled fixed-wing aircraft (along with their necessary counters of course!)

Let's be real tho, the combat overhaul isn't good, it's way over the top. I understand why it was made, but it's too much. Not only that, but there's stuff that needs fixing still to this day after squad has been out for 10 years. Like vehicle physics, vehicle driving and sound bugs. I only hop on for a match or two now just because of how frustrating and stupid it is now.

I used to play this game when you had to go around a wall because you couldn’t jump over it, on a map called Operation First light. I remember when they added the FOB but not the HAB and the FOb had a time after which you could spawn so we were running around the “Forest” map putting FOBs (because you didn’t even needed build materials) and just let the FOBs “cook” and become spawnable. Played this game until the British faction was released and then had to sale my PC for rent money… miss this game so much really want to try the new update ICO but can’t afford a new PC. Thank you Moi for keeping me updated on this game, I watch every video that you put out of this game! Especially “Eye in the Sky” feels like I’m playing! You’re making my day better each time you upload!

As someone who's been a huge PR fan and was playing squad since the beginning (Kickstarter) squad has lost all its fun. It was great, it felt like a good balance between Arma and battlefield. But now it's just a drag to play. Oh well, 3k hours of play time isn't bad value for the money I paid, but yeah squad is dead to me. I hope someone else makes a game like squads was.

I can live with the ICO update and other things, but the fact that even after I upgraded my PC to a 4060ti, Ryzen 5 5600, and 32gb RAM and I still barely get 45 fps on 1080p low setting is ridiculous. They need to release some serious optimizations updates before I return to the game.

2023 has been an AMAZING year for squad, I've been playing when this game first came out and its amazing to see how big the community has grown and the mod support this game has! It's absolutely beautiful to see how far this game has come, growing up playing ARMA 2 and 3 and transitioning to Squad is very fun. The game at times does get boring playing the same thing over and over but MODS keep up the fun for this game. I LOVE this game and I am so excited for the up and coming year!

Honestly my biggest issue with ICO is how sick it makes me feel, I really wish they had some settings to reduce shake and blur effects for those of us who get migraines and motion sickness.

I bounced off of Squad three times in the past because I *knew* I could love it if it were just a tad different -- and the ICO refined it into exactly the kind of game I was looking for. I've finally been able to stick with and really enjoy it.

I still think its shit. I have not spoken to a single person to this day that actually enjoys the combat overhall more than they used to enjoy the old gunplay. I think most people who dislike the ICO just switched to playing modded squad which has gotten a huge boost in player numbers recently. Before the overhall i primarly ran infantry now it has completly changed to me playing vehicles 80 percent of the time. Yes the ICO hasnt killed the game but i think an update with a new faction and a shit ton of bug fixed would have grew the game much more than the ICO has. Games that are being worked on generally grow in player numbers as there are more people starting to play videogames in general. As long as the developers are unable to fix audio bugs, crouch glitches, vehicle physics, reload bugs, map holes, invisible walls, invisible stones, desynced helis, double damage bugs, aim drift and many more thing i dont know why they even bother to put in new stuff. Fix the game > ICO

I love the ICO and the feel that it brought to squad, but my framerate took such a massive hit. I went from playing from 60+ fps at all times to now around 20 fps on all low and even worse when I ADS just made it impossible for me to play anymore. Maybe at some point they will find a way to get it better optimized or I eventually upgrade to a better system.

I love ICO. I played PR before squad, then bought squad and loved it in the beginning. But then COD metas started gaining traction, teamwork started dying, and I ended up playing a lot less of it. First iteration of ICO was a little much, but I still enjoyed it, and with the last tweak it feels like they absolutely nailed it. Guns feel great, suppression is scary, and firefights are actually firefights again, instead of a cs comp match in the middle of the wilderness.

I’m one of those 2k hr+ squad lead veterans who’s been around since PR days. Just reinstalled/played squad for the first time since I uninstalled during ico go live. Honestly sharing the sentiment with other veterans in oce community, can see why we uninstalled it. Miss old squad days. Organising time try group up with a semi active clan that still plays to see if I can get properly into it again like one of these new players

ICO killed it for me. Is it more realistic? Sort of. But it just feels very... unfun now, the weapons feel so horrible to use. Overall gameplay is probably better, but it just feels so atrocious to me. I respect people that like it but I do not.

I play modded squad exclusively, honestly I dont understand how anyone could enjoy aiming an rpg for 8 seconds just to have it sway last second and miss your shot. the recoil was also changed to be quite ridiculous, your guy holds his sights up in the air for like 5 seconds every time you aim, just makes no sense but the bullets seem to go forward perfectly like its being held straight?? overall this update really killed the game for me, like i said MEE And Global escalation are still tons of fun as they tone down the ico a tremendous amount. I feel like the game has become so infantry unfocused, vehicles have no sway and are more powerful, people hiding in bushes are more powerful because being prone gives you an inherent advantage, you run 10 seconds down an embankment and your soldier is unable to fight back against dudes hiding in bushes. pushing on the offensive was a bit frustrating in the past with the stamina system but now its damn near impossible. Im all for good positioning and slower action, but I feel really sad when I try to play infantry, its just no fun anymore. oh and not to mention the supression mechanics of your entire screen becoming blurry?? one shot from an apc or 50 cal or even most light machine guns depending lands on a tree to my far left and my guy magically cant see for like 10+ seconds? sometimes its bugged and you can see by aiming in your scope? also, if your guys so tired from running hes unable to even look through his scope as it will be basically covered with a black ring about 40% of the time with small sporadic instances of your guy being able to see through the scoppppee.....aaaand its gone. just sucks playing anything infantry based, machine gunners cant supress unless they go prone, set up, get bipod, and even then the recoil will pull you to the heavens. Guns shoot backwards not exclusively upwards. I dont care if squad goes back to what it used to be, but seeing like 5 soldiers missing you point blank because youre shooting them or they are being supressed is just an absolute clownfest. ask the boys at camp mcarran if they got all wobbly under enemy fire, if they couldnt shoot because they were being supressed. War is war and some of us are soldiers and some of us are gardeners. I dont wanna play a game that forces me to be the gardener.

It's funny that you base the player base on vanilla servers only. Many mods like MEE or Star Wars updated that time as well and a big portion of our community started to play again because of them. I like the ICO in terms of PIP scopes and suppression, but the sway makes combat feel like a dice throw 30% of the time.

I came back to Squad in September (I didn't even know about the infantry overhaul at the time) and am now a regular. This update was a tremendous improvement for an already good game. 10/10

I came around to liking ICO BUT, I still think the sway needs to be adjusted. Instead of the "noodle arms", have the butt of the gun be almost stationary while the rest of the sway is at the forward end. other than that, I'm content for the most part lol.

I get it, Squad is your golden goose. But let’s be honest. The new updates since ICO are terrible. I have nearly 3000 hours in and started working out of town. Didn’t play for six months or so. When I came back I didn’t even recognize the game. My favorite game. Of course the player base has a baseline. Hardcore guys (like me) that won’t stop playing even though it’s getting bad. Squad drops free weekend and it bumps up. I really hope they get this sorted, Squad was a very original game, unlike anything else. But now….. well they are counting on the CoD players to join.

The ico feels incredible. Any sort of rushed game decisions are almost instantly punished because your opponent positioned themselves better. I feel like every time I lose an engagement I can thinking back through the chain of decisions that lead to that loss. Same with wins. Communication and forward thinking being far more crucial than individual gunplay is exactly how squad should be. Even losing a game can be a blast just from the synergy you have with your squad and team. Just like how sometimes wins feel deflated because that synergy was missing. As I binge your eye in the sky videos seeing how often run and gun and twitch shooting pays off in older videos really highlights how important the ico is to make squad squad. I think at this point the ico just needs to be fine tuned and perfected. I.e binoculars and red dot/iron sights being less affected by shaky arms and suppression. And some more variety in the game modes would be interesting, something to focus on logistics and construction. Have the logistic supplies be randomly spawned through the map so teams have to fight over and secure supplies. Bring them back to your base to stockpile and defending the stockpile from enemies attacking and looting it. Just a bit more variety compared to capturing points

Safe to assume the growth in concurrant players is mostly the growing China playerbase. Then the ICO was drastically nerfed not long after the release, appeasing many of the major concerns people had. Those numbers wouldn't look so healthy if OWI hadn't made the changes they have.

The ICO actually puts an emphasis on small unit tactics -- fire and maneuver, suppression, strength in numbers, etc. If you try to utilize these tactics in any other shooter (milsim-ish or otherwise), you and your buds get ganked by one sweat lord. It just kills the vibe when everybody's Rambo.

I bounced about a year ago because I just couldn’t get the game to run right, Ryzen 5800x and 1080ti and I could barely run the game because of the apparently strange CPU usage issues. I did a clean install recently so I’m gonna hop back on and see!

What a load of bullshit. Squads OCE player base went from typical 3 -4 servers 7 days a week with high quality competitive games every night to some nights not even having a single populated server. Movement speed nerfs have literally made the games pacing so slow / matches feel like they drag out. Identifying targets and then having to literally stop and hold shift while your soldier tries to figure out where his shoulder sits isn’t rewarding or skill based in any regard. It just makes playing infantry roles suck ass. Squads now screaming over command about being pinned down by a light vic 3km off cap and don’t even grasp the concept of what a cap point is . People asking me to drop a spawn point as a solo heli pilot I’ve played squad most evenings for the last 3 years and having a community of players that I’d recognise and see every night suddenly be obliterated doesn’t scream healthy. The teamwork and tactics ico claimed it was going to bring literally killed off majority of the players who were using unit tactics and smart/intelligent plays has now slowed down to a snails pace in comparison to pre ico and players now spend more time roleplaying than pushing active caps. Now more than ever I spend more time running from poorly placed habs to caps or watching the friendly radio go down as some blueberry with a hat kit min arms on a passing enemy transport. The thing that made pre Ico special was that It never forced a style of play on you and the skill ceiling was insane. The game isn’t In a good place , not compared to what I experienced pre ico .

I think the stamina system is great! Id say its almost perfect actually. Much needed and exellently implemented. These are steps in a correct direction for shooters.

Game is in awful state, didn't play it since Oct. 7, uninstalled, don't plan to comeback ever to that shitshow of a game. Also, maybe one day they'll change it and you'll need to go through a 9-month bootcamp before joining servers. Because "rEaLiSm". And that's even with the fact "Squad" legitimatelly was my favorite game for like 5 years at least and there is nothing of this type to play instead.

Really agree with you saying that we need more game modes. RAAS, AAS and invasion is getting stale. Nonetheless, I understand that those kinds of updates take much deliberation and development time.

I get this is satire...but seriously noodle arm bad objectively and no it is NOT a minority. You're looking at steam active player numbers and saying oH nUmBeR bIgGeR sO uPdAte GuD because you think somehow a 1000 player increase is causative and representative of the majority of the community's opinions?? Did you ever think that maybe OWI just spent some of that microtransaction money on more advertising??? You think devs can do no wrong??... Also btw how popular a game is doesn't determine the quality of the game. There are a lot of popular, overrated games and a lot of hidden gems too.

Weapon handling is still horrific since ICO. They need to implement weapon resting on surfaces to allow pinpoint aiming, bipods need to provide legitimate stability as well. A machine gun is very accurate at medium to long ranges yet that is totally disregarded since ICO. Heavy weapons kick a legitimately laughable amount. I enjoy Squad, i just see these as valid criticism's. There is merit to many of the weapon handling critics they have implemented. Just because squads move & flank on the map the way you would want them do doesn't mean squads are using basic Fire & Move tactics.... it means they are following the path of least resistance, or in this case, the one with the least blurry screen.
