There's been a lot of talk about this in terms of the transition from Star Trek: Next Generation to Deep Space Nine to Voyager, where the 90's seemed to bring in more grimness and darkness with each passing year. The same thing happened in music. We went from the pop and glam of the 70's and 80's to grunge/alternative/heavy metal in the 90's. It wasn't just movies, but all of media was turning towards "gritty realism" during the 90's and early 2000's. Action heroes of the 80's just got replaced by newer, more popular themes.

I don't know if it's 9/11 specifically as much as a reaction to Iraq War in general. Like, those films feel less like they're "we'll stop the plane terrorists this time" and more "this is why raining hell on Iraq didn't just fix everything in two months".

Thank you for the recognition that the Fast and the Furious films 100% fall into this kind of cheesy, schlocky action film genre. In my head I kept going “what do you mean we didn’t see The Rock in those sorts of movies? That’s EXACTLY what the The Fast and the Furious movies became!” My own theory for the disappearance of 80s style action heroes is that the MCU evolved into sort of that role in the film market. So instead of implicitly superhuman protagonists who shrug off bullets and explosions with their abs and sheer testosterone, we now have explicitly superpowered heroes who can do superhuman things because… that’s just what we naturally expect superheroes to be able to do. And Marvel currently so dominates these sorts of over the top action blockbusters that it’s kind of suppressed competition in that particular arena. When the MCU bubble pops (and I think we’re seeing signs that that’s starting to happen) I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a little bit of a re-emergence as Hollywood drifts in a slightly different direction (my own personal prediction is toward more animated feature films).

I think it’s because the shift was to martial arts. Kind of aligned to the “sleek combat”.
@Duiker36
@Duiker36 2 ай бұрын
I'm not sure there was a shift to martial arts in general, since you had Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris, et. al. predating the 80s action hero, but you might be onto something with *Mixed* Martial Arts building popularity over the 90s, such that "lol karate chop" and "kick from crane stance" stopped being the whole of what Americans thought martial arts was. And then Jason Bourne happened in 2002.

think the big reasons things changed were probably the increase in popularity of Asian culture and the huge tech boom in the 90's. bigger focus on both martial arts and technology. jackie chan and jet li became huge in the 2000's, same with movies like the matrix, equilibrium, aeon flux, etc. id also say the genre did continue a bit at least with stars like will smith. got movies like bad boys, independance day, men in black, yeah the lean more buddy cop but talk about some cheesy action movies

The obvious answer of what happened to these movies is staring you in the face... Modern superhero movies are the modern 80s action hero movies.... Superhero actors these days are way more roided up than 80s action heroes (except the former bodybuilders of course) we just excuse it by giving them superpowers :-) Also, when they mention modern Westerns, there also are modern Action Hero Equivalents (Expendables, Reacher etc. and some actors like Jason Statham seem to be living the 80s action hero wave for 40 years :-) ) It hasn't died, just isn't at the forefront.

Robocop deserves more attention in relation to the 80s muscle man action flick, because it is a deliberate comment on those movies. The main protagonist becomes the strong action hero by being dehumanized but is only able to complete his journey by rediscovering his humanity. At the same time the prominent female lead is his colleague, not his romantic interest and she is definitely not a damsel in distress but can kick serious behind. Verhoeven also deliberately went overboard on the violence.

True lies and last action hero are great. I think a big deal why the classic action heros died that they were cheaper to produce which was a selling point. But with budgets ballooning the cost was no longer that important. We had a few like gladiator. But some of the superhero movies are kind of close on running on physical violence, they just cost more money and you can do more special effects.
