When Percy died Travis decided to threaten a young boy out of frustration. When Scanlan died Travis yelled at his friends who was also exhausted from that fight and now shocked and grieving. I don’t call him Grog here because this is basically Travis’s toxic masculinity shown at its very worst.

I think Grog's anger and screaming "Fix him" was honestly more heartbreaking than Percy's gruesome state. Especially since Pike had already tried and it just, failed.

This is by far my favourite cr moment, it is so genuine and jarring. You hear Grog angry a lot but it's always almost happy rage, but this moment is pure anger. This is one of the moments that keeps Grog from being a joke character and I love it.

@@trealosgaming3345Y'all always bellyaching about Vex's greed when half of the party lies, cheats, steals, manipulates, etc. Vex is eager to loot but so is Grog and half of the party. If this is all because of the broom situation then Y'all need to get over it and stop beating a dead horse. Having a character whose flaw is having to manage their greed doesn't make the character a bad character nor Laura deserving "karma" because her character isn't lily white and pure. I bet if Scanlan stole the broom y'all would have laughed it up.

3:12:36 Of any time any character has gotten emotional in this campaign, I'm thankful for Travis to be willing to yell to express Grog in a way that sounds appropriate to hear. A hint of me felt a pissed-off dad yelling when he demands for Scanlan to be fixed. Thank you, Travis.

I'm just here to say Patrick's intentional "Oh child... Wishing doesn't make it so" after he as a player KNOWS Marisha rolled a 20 and scored a 31 on Keyleth's perception is such a great, underrated moment. That one little addition makes an already great moment better. Patrick is being a great player here -- making his character "wrong" so Marisha's Keyleth can look even better in this moment.

Respectfully, you seem very disproportionately upset over a fictional character in a made up game about dragons and magic. Regarding "fake" armor and "fake" characters, it's ALL made up. The game is a game. Even if Matt wasn't following RAW, at the end of the day, the point of the game is the enjoyment of the players and the wider group storytelling. It's also important to remember that you're talking about other humans. Marisha-hate used to be exceedingly common and way disproportionate with her "offenses." Do we really have to aim this much hate at Keyleth, whether or not she rolled what she rolled? Also, how does one determine she faked the 20? Lots of questions and even if the answers were satisfactory, it still seems like overblown anger over a game.

Travis'/Grog's reaction to seeing Scanlan is my favorite part of the whole series. The way he goes from disbelief, not to sadness but to anger suits his character perfectly. The rage he shows and simple words he delivers are brilliant. Such a sad and emotional piece of acting in such a short fleeting moment. Well done Travis.

@@akiraking00 I hope its 2 seasons long cause there is so much in the Concave arc that 2 seasons (Hopefully 24 or around that episodes long so we don't miss out much) cause you can have 1 season of them gaining the vestiges and killing the black dragon and then season 2 is going to Ank'harel and finishing off Vorugal, Thordak, and end with the departure of Scanlan with his Daughter, at least I think thats the best way to split both seasons imo. Im actually kinda surprised how much they sorta kept to full events/changing events to make more sense in the show that I am seriously hoping the other seasons keep such great moments.

I really can not see how Keyleth can have such a very very very very, VERY high wisdom and never plays her character as one that understands. Marishia plays her character as a totally inerrant imbecile. And Kerrek plays a character with exteremly high Wisdom and has such a low wisdom score. Intelligence are played perfectly well by Percy and Tiberius. Wisdow is played perfecly by Kerrek (if he was to have a high Wisdom) and Pecry (high Wisdom). A very low wisdom is played perfectly byTiberius (low wisdom) and keyleth (was never played with a wisdom higher than a 6, even though she had a wisdom of a 22). lol

@@LightH0USE1because it’s game mechanics? People wanna play the characters they wanna play, not by some numbers? Playing a class and not having a high number in its primary stat is not gonna be fun, nor is having to limit your characters by stats which would make it harder to play stuff outside class stereotypes. Sure it’s good when the stats line up, but it’s hardly a requirement, especially when skill modifiers also exist to explain characters abilities.

This episode was intense as hell on so many levels. The fight, Scanlan's death and the search for Kaylie, but above all, Allura and Kima's failed teleportation in the middle of the ocean. I know they're just NPCs but I swear, the perspective of the two of them drowning alone and hopeless as we were seeing them swimming for their life and struggling to stay afloat through Keyleth's scrying spell literally made my blood curdle. For a few moments I was struck with sheer horror, and in a state of emotional distress that CR had never made me reach so far. Bloody fucking hell. This show will be the end of me.

When Grog comments not joining in the temple of the Raven Queen and Vex asks why and all he has to say is "I don't know... I'm just me." I feel that... the helplessness of a martial character or someone who just doesn't have any resources to give. Grog's perspective on what magic is and how it works is very sad this episode...

@@SetzerGabbiani Restrained doesn't stop you from using spells. Restrained A restrained creature's speed becomes 0, and it can't benefit from any bonus to its speed. Attack rolls against the creature have advantage, and the creature's attack rolls have disadvantage. The creature has disadvantage on Dexterity saving throws. Meteor swarm is not a spell attack, it is a dex save. So ya you can totally use Meteor Swarm or any spell while restrained.

@@SetzerGabbiani Rules as Written do trump common sense because guess what it's a game. 1st point. 2nd Point, Dragons do not need spell components to cast spells. They are magical beings in and of themselves. (This is more of a point from earlier editions of DnD but from the variants of dragons in the Monster Manual they don't need them for casting spells.)

@@SetzerGabbiani Bit late to address this comment but I think it's important you understand that there is no reason at all that Raishan couldn't have cast meteor. She may be restrained, but there's nothing to suggest she can't use her hands for the somatic component of the spell, and nothing is silencing her to prevent the verbal requirements. As Crazyscotsman explained, restrained places no limitations on the casting of the spell and the disadvantage on attack rolls is irrelevant. She also wasn't under any kind of affect that would affect her concentration. Both by RAW and by common sense, the casting of that spell was completely fair.

Is it the extensive work you've done with Dungeons & Dragons and Chris Perkins? Oh wait........ you had a record breaking kick stater to....... oh no, that wasn't you. I'll bet if you DM, it isn't in front of a live audience and cameras so wouldn't have any of the associated pressures. I've been playing D&D since 1988 and have played with scores of people and Dungeon Masters in that time and Matt is easily top 2 due to his world building, story telling, character work and the way he includes his players. In a game like D&D, fun is always the trump card. If you're going to argue a point of creatures and spell casting, the argument falls flat with magical creatures not requiring VSM for their spells (although it would be a really funny encounter to have a beholder that can't use the spells that come from it's eye stalks as it has no fingers to wiggle)

They could have let him play Pike's character. I've done this, in a way, when I killed a PC in a fight. I gave them the minion enemy stat block and had them continue to play, but now as a group of enemies. Before anyone complains at me, the PC in question was able to come back, so everyone relax.

To any players watching. Travis writing down everyone’s initiative and play order and any spells or effects that are present on each person. This kind of support for the DM especially in a large battles like this is invaluable. Marishas general note taking is a DMs dream, having players who write stuff down and don’t rely on constantly rolling to “remember stuff” is amazing but in combat Travis has the easiest job as a character, run at stuff and hit it, so supports by keeping his own notes about the status of the battle who is next and who has what on them now.

Make no mistake, Feeblemind is the reason Raishan died in this fight. VM + Kerrek, Allura and Kima could probably have finished her by the numbers, but Raishan would definitely have bamfed out with dimension door & the flown away if she determined she was in mortal danger. Feeblemind reduced her capabilities, but most importantly kept her from escaping.

1:47:56 The sheer horror from Laura and Marisha when Matt almost disintegrated Ashley's character without Ashley there was just-- the purest moment of friendship... Holy ****! No hate on Matt because I seriously admire his ability to act/react without bias but having Pike die without Ashley there would have been THE WORST. (In the words of Marisha: "That would have been the worst fucking phone call!") I love that the armor they almost didn't make the trip for was the only thing that kept Pike up.

I honestly would have been really upset with Matt for this. Based on the numbers, (damage rolls from the spells in question, even with resistances, and the DC and her +0 dex save which means automatic failure), there's an incredibly unlikely chance that this could have ended in anything other than a "forced death" situation for Pike...while her player's away, no less. Add on to this that the disintegrate was being cast as a legendary action before she even had a chance to act, and it's only more of an insult to injury situation. Frankly, I'm still a bit upset with him for it because he even admitted he didn't remember she had the "save from death" ability on her armor. It's probably one of the most questionable things I've seen him do so far.

Out of all the fights in CR history, this is the one were I actually thought a TPK would happen in both C1 and C2. Keyleth stopped it though with that clutch feeble mind. She was focusing on spellcasters specifically Scanlan and Allora, the only ones who could counter spell her. I think she was saving a teleport and was making sure she would have a way to escape if she started loosing, but her losing the ability to cast spells shut that down and allowed her to be kill. I don’t think she would have died in this battle if it weren’t for Keyleth.

I believe Matt confirmed later on (can’t remember where exactly) that had Feeblemind not succeed or been cast, Raishan would’ve escaped and not been seen again until she completed her research, which wouldn’t have been until campaign 2. Thank god Keyleth managed that spell, eh?

It was mathematically impossible without it. That deck was mad stacked against the party until he had no access to her spell casting. He really wanted to keep her as a villain, he went out of his way to try to make sure he could. Clutch, world changing spell.

@Elie Berman-Brodsky I think she was a lot stronger villain then we realize. She clearly was the one that made the conclave and brought them together. She was playing both sides. Using them like her puppets to get what she wanted and she was able to accomplish her goal she probably would have been a lot harder to beat. She nearly did too. And she was smart enough to let the other people think they were the ones using her. Pretending to be submissive to the red dragon when she was actually controlling him like Littlefinger does. And doing the same for Vox machina.

A perfect example of great dming is around 1:46:00 when Matt played true to his villain and went after Pike with a powerful spell, but then did everything in his power to help her survive without going back on the spell. He checked the rules, he had an npc help, but in the end he let it happen because that's what the dice decided. Luckily we didn't have to worry too much due to her armor, and you can see the relief when he realizes that. Players like to get it in their head that the dm is out to get them but, at least with good dms, that's never the case. We just don't want to hand out free victories, because those aren't fun.

True in that moment but totally fake when his fiancée Marshia made a fake natural 20 roll to save a full-plated armored kima along with a weak wizard having the strength to hold her above water without zero rolls to keep afloat. But not only being afloat they were actually swinging too. Turn a perfectly, believable and awesome episode into a fake and not believable episode.

I don't buy that "I had forgotten she had that" for a second. :D I was a perfect moment to create drama and the way he consistently ignored the mention of the armor effect by Tal and Laura until after it had procced shows you that he knew what he was doing. Besides, if he really had wanted Raishan to kill Pike, he simply would've used the next 2 legendary actions to cast another Disintegrate on Pike.

Got to give it to Marisha on this one. Her conversation with Raishan was not bad. Her bringing faerie fire to a fight against an enemy relying on invisibility (the only player who appeared to bring a spell specifically for this) was really good. And using feeblemind after the dragon had burned all of her legendary resistance was great.

rewatching in 2020. grog's 'fix him' moment in this episode is unmatched. vex silently crying and recoiling hen grog screams at the healers of the group. unmatched. grog has very few solemn and serious moments but i think that just makes the ones he does have a lot more impactful.

I liked it, if only because the captions usually cover up those players and it was nice to see their faces for a while. Honestly wouldnt mind if they switched off at break or every other episode, cause I always have the captions up, and thus never see the bottom players as they talk.

Absolutely. And also makes me realize how much better of a roleplayer she is than Taliesen, who didn't even have Percy *react* to Vex's predicament and death in the first Raishan fight beneath Emon. At first I thought it was maybe because Percy somehow missed it, but then Taliesen had him make a flippant joke about her "not passing out this time" in the previous episode when he saved her from the gravity well and she was profusely apologizing for almost dying and causing him worry. Which is a weird choice in its own right, but it also means that Percy *was* aware of it and Taliesen just decided to *ignore* it, which is an *incredibly* weird choice and definitely not what Percy would have done at this stage of his development. Like, no hate to Taliesen, he's a great player, and made a *really* fantastic character in Percy, but he definitely struggles with really submerging himself and acting within the RP the way Laura does (and again no hate because improvisational roleplay is difficult to do, and he generally does it well). It's just that she's deep-sea diving, and he's Snorkling. I oftentimes find myself making slight head-canon revisions to what Percy says and does to make Taliesen's choices more logically consistent with the character and his development.

@@BinTtown I've played DnD once... DM'd the 3.5 basic set designed for first time players, and we all were first timers. Got two TPKs in two hours while going *really* easy on them, so harshness confirmed.

@@LoLotov Not surprised at all. 3.5 if you were under level 8-10...you were basically dead meat. 5E plays alot more like a video game :) Which is to the players benefit. The current group that I DM for...I keep having to up monsters HP just to challenge them and they are only level 5 and I'm tossing challenge rating 6 and 7 stuff at them. They just beat a CR6 young white dragon in 2 rounds. The bloody manticore I threw at them lasted longer. Course I used fly and run tactics with the manticore. I didn't with the dragon...in hind sight I should have :)

I could rewatch the moment when Grog pleads for the party to "FIX HIM" a thousand times. That, to me, is the saddest moment in all of Campaign 1. They were best friends, dualities of each other. They did everything together because they were as different as they were the same. So, when Scanlan fell, and Grog, after seeing him come through again and again and again, just could not believe it. The man twice as big as him, yet a third of his size fell.
