One thing I noticed in my 2nd watch of this show that I love is that in the room with the beds there are pictures on the walls depicting what games they're going to play-- it's all under their noses the entire time, but they're all so focused on themselves they can't see the things that could save their lives.

imo, who wouldnt tbh? firstly they just experienced something that most of us wont ever experience, mass killings of the people around them. all they would care about them is staying alive. additionally, the hopelessness of their situation and also their own lives wont make them very observant. and in the end, a lot of viewers wont even have noticed these artworks until someone or the show points it out to them. for example, u stated you only noticed this thing on ur 2nd viewing lol

Dayum, shit gets meta af. In the final scene, Giyun fails the game because he is still thinking in terms of the squid game. That he is a player and not able to help the dying man when in fact he wasn't a player and was able to. The squid game lives on within Giyun (and us), defining how we relate to one another, as players (who do not have the first instinct to help others) and as the pink men who follow rules, observe the game, and do not help the players. We do not participate or not participate in the squid game; we are the squid game.

@@quangloc97 I don’t need to disclose my age to you, but I had the highest grade in advanced English in a class of 700 all through high school and got A's in college writing, so I don’t believe this is a matter of lack of comprehension on my part. You may disagree with me, though, and that’s totally fine. I’ll break my interpretation of OP's comment down for you: We do not “participate” or “not participate” in the squid game (as in, both perspectives are invalid). The squid game is not a separate entity, disconnected from humanity. Because we (humanity) are the squid game. Giyun did not help the man lying in the snow outside. This implies that he does not view himself as part of the old man’s game/challenge/bet (that no one will come to help). He views himself as a non-participating member of the game/bet. OP is saying that Giyun’s assumption (that he is not part of the game/bet) indirectly implies that we have two choices: 1. We participate in the squid game, or 2. We do not participate in the squid game. However, OP is saying that we have no such choices. The squid game AND the old man’s game/bet are allegories for the real world. In the real world, we can’t NOT choose to participate in life. From the moment we’re born, we are all forced to participate in the “game” of life. We are never outsiders, and we are never really given a choice to “not participate” (unless you consider suicide?). For the old man, the bet was never about participation or non-participation. He most likely wanted to make the point to Giyun that he, and the billions of others on the planet, are the ultimate Squid Game. Giyun SHOULD have gone to help the man, but he didn’t, because Giyun viewed himself as a non-participant. But we as humans should stop thinking of ourselves as having a choice, and we should start thinking of ourselves as morally obligated to help others. Is this interpretation lengthy and a bit esoteric? Maybe for you. Could OP possibly have worded their last sentence better? Sure. But OP's meaning and intent was perfectly clear to me.

I initially thought the same thing about Gihun not helping the man at the end, but then someone explained to me that this game wasn’t a test to see if Gihun was a good person. That’s already been established in the show. This was a test to see if Gihun is the standard, or an outlier. If Gihun just went down there and helped the man himself, what would that prove? One person being a Good Samaritan multiple times doesn’t mean much in the grand scheme of things, and it means even less seeing as he actively made a bet around that. But seeing another complete stranger go out of their way to help shows that humanity as a whole has the capability to value kindness.

I always see people upset about how the games started to become unfair, but thats the whole point, make it unfair to make the players scramble and reveal their true colours
@bigbadgammagnome
@bigbadgammagnome Жыл бұрын
I think it's partly because people want to see it as an actual game show, or something they themselves could take part in and win, rather than what it truly is: unfair, and deliberately constructed to be that way. Even I was tricked by this, I got really frustrated when Kang got stabbed by a shard of glass and nobody treated her wounds, meaning she only died because she was injured and able to be preyed upon. But it perfectly encapsulated what the series is going for with its mirroring of South Korean society, as said in the video, with inequality even tho it's supposed to be equal But yeah seeing Squid Game clones like Crab Games exist is so weird, like I'm glad people have fun playing it but it very clearly doesn't care about the entire point of Squid Game, imo

@@justinthawsetmyo4173 every game is unfair. Red light is unfair because the contestants were never explained what the stakes are, knowing their lives were at risk would have changed the way they approached it, and wouldn’t have lead to the mass panic which killed so many. Honeycomb was unfair because everyone was forced to pick a shape without any context of what that shape meant, and there had to be a set number in each queue, if the triangle queue was full then you will have a worse time. Tug of war forced people to team up without knowing what they were supposed to team up for. Also this is the first game where you are no longer reliant on individual merit to succeed. If you have one person in your team which is not up for the task, you will die regardless of how good you individually can perform. Marbles deliberately uses the feeling of cooperative competition from the tug of war to fool the participants when asking them to make pairs, turning alliances into opponents. They are allowed to form a bond and perhaps even a game plan and then asks them to kill one another, there is nothing fair about that. And stepping stones, forced to choose once again with no context. Going first is mathematically a death sentence, while going last could kill you if the people ahead of you simply decide not to go forwards, and each jump is a 50/50 chance, even when they try to put the odds in their favour the front man removes that from them. It is never about personal merit, it is simply about watching them fall. There is only the illusion of fairness, but the veil of ignorance is so heavily applied that every games lands like a sucker punch.

I said it elsewhere but I'll say it here too; Squid Game has the perfect balance of having colors that are bright, luminous and highly saturated and yet all in a way that doesn't burn my retinas. I didn't think such a thing was possible and yet this show proved me wrong. I don't know if there was some kind of mathematical saturation ratio or some kind of funky science behind it like crosswalks being "lunar white" and Disney's go-away-green, but it's incredible!

as much as I am not a professional, I did catch on the color schemes inside the game rooms are often primary colors, since kids are in need of stimulation bright colors connect to their visual stimulation, therefore making them also be "adult sized" kid playgrounds makes them have the perspective of a child again "just playing a game", also the staircases were still primary colors, but pastels, making it a calmer tone visually, while also making it unnerving by adding the guards with actual weapons, the contradiction of safe and danger makes the player be aware of their 50/50 chance of winning or losing the next game, and a maze only navigatable by following those same guards that will shoot the failing players, this makes them feel dependent yet untrusting, as much as they'd wish to go on their own, they could get indefinitely lost, mentally trapping them.

Giyun is more interested in finding answers than in helping the people around him, with the exception of Sae-byeok. And it's odd that he was more interested in *her* than in reuniting with his own daughter. Remember that he didn't board the plane to the US; he turned around to go after the Squid Game traffickers instead. Why does he care more about Sae-byeok than his own daughter? Maybe it's because he sees her as being on his level, whereas his daughter has a nice lifestyle with a well-off stepfather, but he doesn't help the man dying in the cold because - just guessing here - he sees himself as above that man's level. Plus, he has answers right at hand, when he didn't have answers at hand while he was playing the game.

Childhood to me is the moment when instincts are unbridled and emotions unabashed, which can lead to violence and bullying (Lord of the Flies, etc.). Most characters are childish in SG, most of all the VIP. The only wise one is the Old Man, who suffers the death of God when the only player he trusted fails his ultimate test... When you said that ultimately Il-nam was right and that he won when we clearly saw at the end that he was wrong about human nature because we saw that person who seemingly walked away return with the ambulance. I thought that moment was to signify that humanity still had some good in it and that it wasn't all bad.

Right?! I love the explanation of him still living by the rules of the game because, instead of feeling like a helpless observer, he could have gone and helped the man himself. However, someone does help. Why? Perhaps to leave us with a sense of hope for humanity? I feel like rewatching the series after listening to this exposition. I was too caught up in the game, myself… And the game was just an ingenious method of telling a story about the nature of humanity.

I loved this vid thanks so much! When you say Gihun wasn’t the true winner of the game, it was Il-nam, I think Il-nam was the real loser, because he lost hope and drowned in his cynicism, he didn’t even see that he lost in the end because someone did help the drunk man but Il-nam died before he saw it. It was a sad and pathetic end for Il-nam as that was what his life culminated to as a mass murder who laughed in the end but he was wrong. Gihun didn’t have to help because someone else did. Humanity was tested there and humanity won. And I think this is what inspired him to turn back for the Front Man.

Like the conclusion but, I always thought that he should bet that someone will help him and then just help him, himself because it wasn't specified. I think he thought it was implied though. Also I didn't notice the games were on the wall of their beds, the entire time.

i've always thought deeply like this about the last game, and everyone seemed to be too distracted by the aesthetic and the memes. the series is great because of all the artistic work and the message but people ruined everything by overlooking all that and missing the entire point. i guess the people behind the series also won that last bet, you can't have any hopes on the majority of people.

Well to be fair, we already live in a capitalist society and humans hate change so their brains purposefully ignore the message (not that they're aware of it)

The whole childish nature to the games and sets also is like a mirror to how children are led by adults and often deceived by adults just because they can and kids don’t have power over adults - just like poor people will always systematically be played by rich people because they will always have the power

I don’t usually support gatekeeping, but god I wish this series didn’t get as much crappy mainstream attention as it did. I loved it, from the cinematography to the writing and obvious political commentary. It’s a real shame that of all things a show deeply criticising capitalism, class inequality and societal decay got turned into a cheap fortnite-esque TikTok phenomenon with cheap knock off merch for children and people who don’t even try to look past surface level storytelling.
