Forge is like the iPhone or windows of modding, it’s easy to use and doesn’t take any knowledge to add mods, but isn’t as customizable or good as fabric

fabric has a bunch of vanilla+ mods, forge is still the absolute best for big mods its hard to say which is more popular because asking the subscribers of one channel will give you very biased results, but they seem to have specified into their own things at this stage that theres no point comparing them

Yeah, I still use Forge for modpacks, as not all the mods I want to use are ported to Fabric, but most of the mods I'd want that were originally developed for Fabric *are* on Forge. If this switches to the other way around, I'll be using Fabric for Modpacks, but this change has been taking quite a while. If you could, with stability, run forge mods on fabric and even vice versa, I'd probably choose and stick with Fabric.

These are still ports, and ports takes longer to adapt. Also ports are not as stable as their native counterparts. Especially when they come from outside of initial dev team.

@@L0um15 Embeddium is more stable with mods than Sodium, see All of Fabric switching to Embeddium fabric when it released due to the better mod support.

@@tomikun8057 Embeddium devs arent assholes, sorry to hear that you were fed propaganda that is being spread by sodium devs. It's funny to read you saying "wouldn't support them like this if I were you", even if they were asshole (which again, they aren't, and you clearly don't have anything close to the full context of the entire situation), I'd support them purely on the basis of not being whiney babies that cry and switch away from FOSS by changing the license to a non-foss one the moment someone makes something better with their code. And I've never had Embeddium crash on me, it's rock solid for me and countless other users, otherwise modpack makers wouldn't have exclusively switched to it.

@@Korr_o It's actually very understandable that they'd make such a switch. Embeddium was heavily criticising them for being "too slow" then forked and forked out of spite (Vintagium, Embeddium, etc.) which set an expectation for the sodium devs that was impossible to attain as they were already deep into the process of massively changing the mod to use the modern OpenGL 4.6 standard from their 3.1 implementation, Embeddium was not in fact more optimized, at all. That's propaganda. Sodium devs are still doing immensely heavy lifting. Then a bunch of the ignorant part of PojavLauncher users constantly harrassed them for PojavLauncher support, something that's nearly impossible, then someone forked Sodium to delete 90% of it and called it "Patched Sodium" for PojavLauncher making an even bigger mess of expectations since there's literally no Sodium left in it. Then you're right, I don't have the full picture, this is nowhere near the extent of how much crap the Sodium developers got for something they're making FOR FREE. If these forks didn't pressure the hell out of the Sodium developers then there wouldn't be a swap, Polyform Shield is also still fairly free, it's completely understandable. I can see how users would see it as a crybaby move but what you don't understand is the amount of death threats devs get for this crap while they're doing this FOR A HOBBY, NONE OF US EVEN DESERVE THIS, IT'S A PASSION PROJECT, you have NO PLACE TO CRITICISE THEM FOR CHANGING A LICENCE WHEN YOU DON'T PAY CRAP AND THEY STILL LET YOU USE IT FOR FREE.

I think the introduction of Sodium for Fabric was the nail in the coffin. Forge is frankly, annoying, bad performance, doesn't have as polished mods released and I think it's really only good when you want to mod version 1.12 and prior. Otherwise, most of the mods made for 1.13 and onward are compatible with both mod loaders and often times I've experienced far better performance possibilities with it. That's not to say Forge is useless, Optifine certainly is still a really cool performance mod that works very well for how old it is and it only runs on Forge and it works really well for old versions of MC.

@@scephal6464 Yeah I know but there are mod incompatabilities and Oculus has been abandoned which means shader support isn't going to pass through to newer versions. Frankly running Fabric is far better but if Forge is what you want for modding old versions then Optifine is still the better choice.

Nobody was upset that mojang added too much things in their update. An I have never heard somebody call 1.13 unbalanced. Most "plateau"-versions that server/mods stay on are usually due to massive code changes or poor performance. when 1.13 was released it was far more demanding than 1.12. It was one of the major reason 2b2t took so many years to finally update. Performance get worse by the year.

Whether a mod loader is better than another depends on what area we're talking about. Fabric is far better in terms of performance than forge is, while forge has far more content to explore.

If you are making a modpack with more than 50 mods it is almost impossible that there will be no incompatibilities with fabric, in forge it works well

I swapped from Forge to Fabric in 1.14 and only use forge when a modpack requires it. Fabric boots faster, errors are easier to read, doesn't require me to give Minecraft +4G of ram than what I usually give it, and it just works™.

Ill make a broad correction rq: Forge is not in decline, it has updated faster then fabric even on 1.20.2. FML was already a thing before RML. Neither forge or fabric is the most used. Both are popular, but with forge not having real metrics its hard to say, and your poll still gives it a 51% lead. Forge is alive and kicking, i wouldnt say its dead

I kinda dissagree. Majority of people still make mods either for Forge or for both. You can clearly see the ratio of almost 2 to 1 if you compare mods on curseforge (version 1.18.2) which says a lot. In my opinion Fabric became more popular due to sheer availability of optimisation mods like Sodium or Nvidium, which is kinda the fault of Mojang for not optimising the game properly, but that's another talk. I will be honest, I'm biased in this discussion. Not because I grew up using Forge, rather because of the divide Fabric brought with it. I'm not against using Fabric or Forge, I just want others to not exist. In the sense I want a monopoly and other mod loaders don't help this case. So yeah that was my TED talk

A monopoly is great for users until it isn't basically, which is exactly what happened I'm more for a world where all mods work on all loaders, so no monopoly, but all the mods. This is why I think Quilt is very promising as it works with 99% of Fabric's mods, no idea about how neoforge works though

Even if a monopoly in modloaders would benefit players, these platforms can make money from us using them, and we should have the option to choose which ones we support. I certainly do not feel comfortable loading ads for overwolf.

Forge is already the monopoly. Fabric broke that monopoly and guess what, it actually forced Forge to actually optimize their shit 1.12.2 loading times can literally be 100x slower than 1.18.2 Competition is GOOD for users

I still use Forge as my primary, but only because I mostly play packs on 1.12.2, 1.10.2, or even 1.7.10 (My first version). If I'm playing newcraft (Which I increasingly do) then I usually go Fabric.

forge is a main modloader, your polls on youtube are going to be biased because even if they pick the modloader, they usually use forge anyways, as most popular packs are forge-based and not fabric-based, and quilt is just a no-go, and neoforge is still just a forge-impostor where all it is is filenames and associations switched around to break compatibility, nothing more... they have yet to actually provide their own code and forked loader, to the point where i heard they may be working from the ground up to actually get it working the way they want to

i still am using forge but only for a maximum of 2-3 years till fabric gets time to develop and get its own mods transfered from forge to fabric and then i will abandon forge

nobody is moving to fabric out of utility or for any other reason than personal differences or views we literally have shade thrown between the modloader devs to the point where its now just desperation to get people off of the most popular modloader, because not only has there been no actual proof provided, some of it has been outright proven false its all a personal issue, its all the linux fanboy issue forge is about compatibility and stability fabric is about performance at any cost quilt is about inter-operability of fabric mods (which is now its own non-compatible system, which is one of the reasons why they are even digging up dirt on forge, because they are desperate for popularity) neoforge is PURELY a personal issue, there is NOTHING that has been changed from the base forge modloader so far, and the reasoning is again, because they thought he was "abrasive" when lexmanos was trying to basically vet additions to the loader (for context, the neoforge people have been plagued with unvetted and buggy code being shoved in by people without any oversight, to the point where its impossible to run as-is, and on top of that, lex listened to mod devs, but neoforge devs have been secretive when they have claimed to be open)

I use forge as my main mod loader I make a lot of mod packs and there in 1.16.5 so as long as the mods dont get deleted im going to use forge how ever I use Fabric for joing server and small light weight FPS boosts in my vanilla worlds

I really think any modloader can work depending on version and modlist. 1.12.2 still goes hard, 1.19.2 is great with fabric and i've modded it like crazy, and 1.20.1 is the version I was able to fit the most mods into to get the craziest experience. Perhaps it'll truly decline by 1.21, but who knows. Modding 1.20 is still an option and one of the funnest in my experience! Fabric is a good contender but hasn't done enough to dethrone forge, since it still has crazier mods and 1.20.1 is more abundant with forge mods than fabric mods, with fabric only defeating forge in 1.19 (in my opinion)

Even for shaders I've switched to Iris loaded with Fabric lol. Add Sodium mod using fabric and that runs better than Forge mods ever will. Idk why. I quit with Optifine. It's not giving me an fps boost like it used to with 1.16 and higher. My opinion ofc

i dont understand why people want mods on the new versions. 1.7.10 and 1.12.2 are both really good and fast. Also, aren't you unable to update modded worlds between Minecraft updates?

For me 1.12 takes a couple minutes to start, and 1.7.10 is just too old for me, I like the new PvP better and 1.12 has arguably better mods and modpacks.

The lead dev of forge rejected the vision of every other dev I believe it was also said that that guy was the reason forge is such a lagfest today and was an awful person apparently Mod loaders are a hobby for the devs, they're not exactly getting paid big bucks for it Just like how you don't have to download every github project made, you don't have to use NeoForge if it's not needed/wanted

I don't like Forge mainly because of my experience with it. It was slow, ugly, not friendly, and had that corporation and ads vibe. Overwolf thing was annoying, and using loader was pain. I remember when I found out about Fabric, and I was shocked that it said which mods were missing, conflicting, or on the wrong version. I always hated Forge's website. There were ads everywhere, and it looked ugly. Modrinth was a perfect solution when it came out and was more focused on Fabric. Sure, the website used to download mods is other thing than modloader, but it is just linked to modloader by its design. I also prefer most fabric mods. They look better and more professional compared to Forge ones. I also don't like Forge's loading screen. Just compare it to Neoforge's one. Fabric and Quilt don't have one, but I like it because it gives me a vanilla feeling, and I can install mods to customize it. Btw, Neoforge and Quilt are probably my favorite mod loaders right now.
