Something I love about the 8 heart scene is that, even though Haley is getting a love for nature and animals...they're not her cows.They're not even *my* cows. She basically trespasses onto poor Marnie's land to play with her livestock! I know the game couldn't make that scene wait til we had cows, but I love how that little detail almost accidentally shows off how Haley still thinks of the world in quite a simple way, even as she grows up more. Haley wants to ride a cow? She's going to ride a cow.

in the 1.6 update, she has a new diaglogue during green rain where she is taking shelter in the saloon and she says she’s never been in here before but it’s cosier then she expected

As an American…I thought that business tax joke was funny because honestly education suffers in the states because taxes don’t go where they should. In Stardew’s case, Lewis makes a gold statue of himself instead of getting the kids new books…

I’ve also seen theories that the reason Haley hates prismatic shard is because Emily loves all gems and it’s a gem. So she hates it because she associates it with her sister. (Which is similar to her fruits and vegetables being hated while Emily is very health conscious)

totally agree about the 10 hearts scene. So many things indicate that you shouldn't go for the kiss. I think that scene has a poor understanding of the female perspective. if a woman is alone in a tiny dark room with someone there must be a lot of hints that the mood is supposed to be romantic or it comes across super creepy,

In my opinion, Haley hates the prismatic shard BECAUSE everyone else loves it. It’s a trend, and Haley doesn’t want to be trendy. She wants to set trends. Also, Haley loves clothes and Emily loves making clothes. Haley would have had to have been a model and/or mannequin for her sister at some point. I also think the dialog about saving the seagull at the beach is interesting, because it mirror Emily saving the parrot during her 6 heart event. As for the Flower Dance, it is a fertility rite, but it also shows all of the eligible bachelors and bachelorettes at the same time, which can be handy if you’re a new player. There are other single people there, but they don’t participate. (It breaks my heart every year that Marlon doesn’t ask Marnie to dance. She deserves so much better.)

the "maybe it'll wash up on another shore" line in her six heart event is what made me start loving haley. i think it says a lot about her that she's not Only upset that the bracelet isn't hers anymore. instead, if it's gone *she wants someone else to have it*. if this special thing that brings her joy is gone, she hopes that instead of laying unloved at the bottom of the ocean, someone else will be able to love it like she did. and i dunno, that just says something about her

I always sort of assumed that the "plastic shoes" line was referring to the farmer wearing wellingtons and she just has no idea what they are. So I guess the makeup version could be similar - Haley's worldview view just does not encompass function over fashion at all

Finally Haley lovers get the recognition we deserve

an example of on of those ‘morality questions’ i don’t like is one of penny’s heart events 💀 she tries to help george get his mail but literally PUSHES HIS WHEELCHAIR WITHOUT ASKING and instead of telling her off you have to either take her side or find a middle ground and it ends with george apologizing for overreacting which pisses me off 😭😭😭

My theory is that Hailey thinks prismatic shards are tacky 😅 she likes other gems but maybe she thinks all of the colors together clash so she doesn't like it, no matter how rare/expensive it is.

Of all the Haley deep dives I've seen, this is now my favorite. It's offered some good new perspectives towards her character and I'm happy to meet another Haley stan. One thing I want to add in defense of her 4 heart event (people seem to really hate it) is that the early game of Stardew encourages doing Help Wanted quests. For seasoned players they can speedrun marriage even before the third week of Spring. But if you take your time playing you've likely done tons of these quests before getting to Haley's 4 heart event. Which means you established yourself as a dependable and helpful person in the town. You probably walked into the sisters house to FULFILL one of their quest. So to Haley, you opening that jar is just normal. Like "Oh you got me that sea cucumber I asked for yesterday! Well since you are here can you also do this thing for me?" And your response to her question can be read as you either understanding and accepting your role, or tryna get outta tasks these villagers can't be bothered to do. So when she says she is surprised at your strength it can also be read as annoying to the player, because "Um, I slay slimes and ghost for money every week. I mine, chop, and fish for my nown resources. I manage a labor intensive, giant farm without a tractor every day from sun up to sun down. What do you mean you are surprised I am strong?" To take it further if you look at the "wrong" answer for her 14 heart event, it can be seen as a callback to her 4 heart event. You answer in a way to express you really don't want to do something these villagers can do themselves, but Haley forces you anyway. But whereas before Haley asks you because it's just kinda what you are known as (the helpful farmer), now she is making sure you are still involved with your community. Which I think is nice since by this point you've automated the farm completely and probably haven't look at the board or bothered attending a festival in a while.

The same thing happened to me, I read the “try to kiss her” option as creepy so I didn’t pick it and I had to quit and restart the day because I didn’t want the scene to be messed up

The headcanon I've seen most often on why Haley hates prismatic shards is because there are too many colours in it - it 'clashes' with everything unless your room is a rainbow. I romanced Haley out of spite at first, but ended up falling in love with her, especially as a spouse. She grows so much, and it's just adorable when she says she fed the animals or watered the crops for you. Sweetie, we have sprinklers and autofeeders, but I love the enthusiasm. She's also just so cute (maybe I'm superficial too lol) - that wide-eyed sprite steals my heart, and seeing her blush feels like an accomplishment. Like this girl who was so confident in herself is blushing because of YOU! That's a big deal! But yes, I also love my rude wife, and can't wait to see Harvey next!

I would read further into the line about not needing you for pickles anymore as being away to show you that she doesn't just think of you as someone who can do her chores for her so she can avoid it. After watching the fight with Emily, she's probably a little embarrassed to be seen as lazy and childish, and the tool for the jar seems pretty symbolic to me

I love Haley! Her and Leah are my favorite bachelorettes. They're the ones I most actively befriend in the game. I adore Haley's arc. She opens herself up to new experiences, connects to people around her, and becomes one of the most conscientious people in town. Yet, she doesn't lose her entire personality. She remains sassy and assertive. I get where you're coming from about her 10 heart event getting muddled by mixed signals. I suspect that Concerned Ape was going for her playing coy during that moment rather than being openly blushing. The pauses seem like she could be dragging out the "Um" and "anyway." Round the eyes and purse the lips, and the expression would read as coy. It feels like a case of using a portrait to double for multiple purposes, but it not quite being close enough to work for everyone. The pursed lips would have helped convey the flirting and desire to be kissed. "Try to kiss her" does sound more questionable about her consent, and it adds to the confusion for sure. Her 14 heart event is really wholesome and among my favorites.

100% agree with you about the 10 heart scene especially about her facial expression!! It’s good that the 8 heart scene includes her interest too. Also agree about blunt vs rude vs mean. About the 4 heart scene - we know Hayley is blunt, or framed more positively she’s honest. After all the hard work you do around the farm you’ll definitely be strong so I think the reason saying yes gives friendship points is because she values honesty. I think to her it’s just another fact, like how you’re not fashionable (but are still pretty) or don’t always smell good. The reason saying no loses hearts could just be because she sees it as dishonest, rather than humble. Or maybe also because if you can open the jar even though you’re not strong, you’re insulting her by implication? But I think it’s more about honesty. If I’m right in assuming the best about concerned ape’s intentions honesty could also be the point/intent behind the 10 heart scene??? Like she wants you to be straightforward about your intentions? That would be more consistent with her character but the way it’s written definitely doesn’t sit right. Also she’s sisters with Emily, I read their conflict as sibling bickering and caused by different preferences rather than one being right or wrong. I actually assumed Emily saying she just wanted to marry a rich man was kinda mean tbh, rather than a truthful statement. Until the 2 heart scene there’s no reason to think she’s messy, you’d expect the opposite. I think Hayley prefers to prevent mess so she doesn’t have to clean while Emily likes to make sure everything’s clean with a routine. Which would lead to Emily doing more work.

Flag would be the word to use for this purpose. Parameter is actually a fairly more technical word describing how one piece of code receives the data from another, but it's not your fault, it's a common misconception. A more minor nitpick but for anyone interested in some basic programming, "string" just refers to the 'type' of data saved. Instead of a "yes/no" or "true/false" choice (called a boolean), a string variable stores a text input letter by letter. Things like your farm name, pet name and Favorite Thing are saved as strings. You probably wouldn't actually use a string for decisions like Elliot's genre, you'd just record the index of the choice (1, 2 or 3) as an integer (number). Or in languages that have an "enumeration" feature, you could have certain code words (such as the genre name) stand in for those numbers in your code for the sake of readability, without spending extra processing power on checking every letter of that text one by one like you would if you used a string. It doesn't actually take a long time to check that, but data-type is still a decision we're taught to make carefully because a few milliseconds here and there do add up when you have to process a thousand of something while the user is waiting.

fully agree on the 10 heart scene fiasco. i also picked the “wrong” option and i was so confused afterwards 😭😭 it just seems creepy to me, yk? and the thing is, considering her life and background you could assume she’s been in a lot of situations like that before, where maybe she didn’t realize someone was being creepy towards her but it actually was since she never explicitly consented. and maybe since she’s still kind of “young” and “sheltered” she didn’t understand that? and maybe the farmer showing that it’s not right to kiss someone in a dark enclosed room without their permission could help her realize that maybe she actually did prefer decorating the room over the kissing? and maybe after they finish decorating she apologizes for being annoyed and then she asks for/initiates the kiss? i think that would be a great way to handle that scene and add very important subtext to her life in general

You offered an awesome perspective on dialogue choice that I hadn't considered before. Even if ConcernedApe decides to never further alter the dialogue, there is a massive community of modders for Stardew -- some of which include developing additional/altered dialogue -- that could potentially make the characters more immersive based on your analysis videos. I think your ideas have tons of potential to be valuable to the Stardew community, and as always, I definitely appreciate that you've taken time out of your incredibly busy schedule to offer an in-depth analysis on each character. I love the idea of giving both agency to the character, as well as the player, and Haley seems like the perfect character to demonstrate what that could look like in her heart scenes. Even though I agree that her dialogue choices could be better, I do adore her progression. I also enjoyed your perspective with divorced Haley -- I wondered if she just moved on because she never cared about you that much in the first place, but what you said makes more sense, because I think she'd still be spiteful/mean of being divorced if she had decided to revert back to that hollow shell. I think it also works because in a bunch of ways, she's the opposite of Emily -- between gemstones, food, etc. So, to me, it tracks that: When you meet Haley, she's used to hiding her true self -- when you meet Emily, she's used to being expressive and open. When you divorce Haley, she's open-minded, and when you divorce Emily, she closes herself off. Thanks again for your deep-dive on Haley! I'm looking forward to your big compilation video! xo

I love your assessment of the 10 heart scene! While I love Stardew Valley, I think the game generally has issues with consent. Without actual eye contact and body language, it's hard to tell whether the characters are giving the nonverbal "I want to be kissed" signs, but we also don't get the chance to give or ask for verbal consent.

I don’t need you, farm boy.” That sort of thing. Like she’s immediately shut back down into a more protective mode and shows the same rude indifference as before. But her not having marriage wedding levels changes things maybe. Idk

I of course missed the visual queues (as I mentioned in Emily's video, I am completely blind), but the tone of the text didn't lend itself to a romance moment. It felt forced and unnatural. your analysis about haley's ten heart scene totally changed my pov on it!! i also thought it was a bit odd, but the way you described it made me... sad almost? like, shes so used to people wanting her in a physical/superficial way (sorta like how she always prioritized physical appearances/attributes and superficial qualities) so she assumed that the way to express interest, love, and affection was by someone kissing her w/o asking in a dark room, rather than trying to engage with her in her outside interests and hobbies. I was definitely not into Haley at first, but I grew to really like her character. It was nice to see she became more open-minded, BUT I 10000% agree with you about the 10-heart-event. I was definitely NOT getting the vibe that she wanted to kiss in that dark room you DEFINITELY have her cornered in. And I also agree that if the way the options were worded was a bit different, it wouldn't be so bad. Possibly some of that on my end was that a heart event with Leah was on my mind, and the "Try to kiss her" rang too much as a creepy move instead of something that she actually was wanting. Cuz, like I said, you DEFINITELY have her cornered in that room. And also you mentioned that she specifically didn't invite you over for that event like so many other 10 hear events. This one, you surprise her by showing up. It's not like we can read her mind, but... it is after you have given her the bouquet, so your intentions are clear and she accepts it. I dunno, I guess it's a problem where it's a conversation in a video game. Some of the subtext is lost, but the character images are supposed to help there. I agree with you, they should have used the blushing face instead of "concerned" or whatever that other image is. In the end, though, it doesn't have a huge impact, but you do miss out on a nice moment with your mean wife if you pick "wrong"!

Maybe do like a lil compilation of the 1.6 update with time stamps for each person? If it's significant enough to justify. I haven't played enough to determine.
