In summary:
Let me start off by saying, every glove is different. This Muay Thai glove guide can also be used for any sport involving striking with the hands.
The amount one spends doesn’t necessarily commensurate the quality of the product.
I have used gloves that cost near the hundreds that, within the week the stitching has come undone, or I have seen premium gloves where one weighed more than the other (left glove weighed 16 oz, right glove weighted 15.2 oz).
In contrast i have used gloves that were mid-range priced (your average cost per pair of gloves) that have lasted me YEARS.
Sure, they smell worse than that sweaty gym shirt you forgot in the back of your trunk.
but that’s neither here nor there.
The last thing I will say is it always a good idea to have two pairs of gloves, one for bag/pad work, and one for sparring.
This rule doesn’t generally apply to everyone, this is more for the fighter or aspiring fighter to be.

Unsurprising, as coach vik is a Tragedy fan, this video was insightful and no BS--which is what I expect from a hardcore fan. I'm just starting Muay Thai as part of my workout routine at the gym and I just picked up a pair of Fairtex gloves. They're really nice and I hope to use them for a year and see where I go. Thanks for the video, sorry to hear about your hand injuries. I'd recommend doing light bag work without gloves to strengthen the hands, or even venture as far as to recommend punching a makiwara on a daily basis. More padding will just make the hand weaker in the long run but it is ofc needed for hard sparring or heavy bag work. Peace out 🙏

I've had just about every brand except Winning and Grant over the last 18 years. None of them have lasted me more than 1 year. A few of them have had the shell wear out or tear. For the most part the padding breaks down. I put in maybe 10-12 hours or training per week. I do a lot of bag work and I think that's what breaks them down the most. I've paid twice as much for a pair of gloves and they don't last twice as long. I'm not really sure the most economical route, but I don't think I'll be investing in a $400 pair of gloves.

Thanks for the guide - definitely one of the most informative videos out there. I'm an MMA newbie, and I'm planning on getting two new pairs of gloves, one for training and one for sparring. I'm thinking of a budget of $300, so I thought I would get a pair of Reyes/Hayabusa gloves and a pair of Twins/Fairtex gloves. Which pair do you think I should invest more in - the training pair or the sparring pair? At first I was going to go for a pair of Reyes 16oz gloves for sparring, but then I realized that I would be using it a lot less than my training pair, which led me to consider whether I should go for 10oz Reyes gloves for training, and a cheaper 16oz pair for sparring. Thanks again!

definetley invest more in a training glove. A quality glove that will last, you will hit the bag and mitts more than you spar. for example for every 8 round sparring session that I have, I will have hit the bag leading up to sparring day atleast 70 rounds. My opinion on a good glove to get for training is the 16oz Fly X velcro or laceup gloves. They are very protective on your hands, They offer good feedbag on the bag, they open good in the palms like muay thai gloves, more comfortable than winning and are very durable. Right now you can get them around $190 on the official Fly UK website(they ship to the us). As for your sparring glove I would say Get yourself a 2nd pair of the fly x gloves in a 16oz as well. I know the two gloves would come out to about $400 but In my opinion theyre worth splurging the extra 100 outside your budget

A glove deodorizer trick that I've been doing for sometime (before I found out about the glove stix): I will fill a small mesh washing machine bag with the appropriate amount red cedar balls to fill up the glove - without overstuffing the mesh bag, yet allowing the cedar balls to fill up a decent amount of space inside the glove. I will leave them in my gloves until the next time that I use them. If cedar shoe tree's work for shoes, I thought they could also work with my boxing gloves - and so far so good.

Its crazy when people spend $45-$50 on those everlast gloves, when they can spend $15-$20 more and get some Fairtex's or Venum gloves that are so much better. I recommend people spend a little more because a lot of new fighters don't know how to punch properly and they can easier injure themselves, i cant count how many times I jammed my thumb or sprained my wrist while using those cheap everlast. I feel like spend a little more and if you don't like it ask around the gym and see if anybody wants to buy them off you. Love the video brother

He used the gloves a few times and gave them away to one of the members of the gym. What I recall was the Velcro wasn’t that great. That seems to be the case even now but YMMV. The brand has been around for a very long time though.

Reyes is a knockout artist's glove. They're made to optimize the connection of your punches and the wrist padding moves weight from the fist to the wrist while also giving extra wrist support for a solid punch. I love Reyes gloves and twins gloves. Twins Special really is top notch stuff

Been trying to do research for my first pair of gloves but there are so many different opinions. I’ve heard mixed opinions about Venum. Heard good things about Hayabusa but I don’t know just how good they are. You said Fairtex and Twins are good but in the classes I take they tend to just stick to kickboxing so I don’t think I need the clenching capabilities that these gloves provide for Muay Thai fighters. Should I just stick to boxing gloves like yahabusa?

@jurrelllaronal1654
@jurrelllaronal1654 3 жыл бұрын
Cleto Reyes gloves in my opinion are not good for MT. They are made from an old school type of padding so even a pair of 16oz's are like getting hit with a pair of 12's 🤕. They don't have good absorption when it comes to padding. They are known as the punchers glove, and if you plan on sparring even lightly you don't want to be that "asshole" in the gym hurting folks while training. For bagwork and pads I say go for it, cuz they do come in some nice colorways but sparring is a no for me. So if someone ask u to spar and they bust out a pair of Reyes just know that their intentions are to bring the pain lol
@thaiboxinginstitute
@thaiboxinginstitute 3 жыл бұрын
If you have the money for the investment, why not? I think they're great gloves, and to echo Jurrell, they sting a bit when getting hit with them. I made a mention of that in the video of it as well. In regards to clinching and sparring ,i don't know what kind of training y'all do so it's hard to say how they will feel to YOU for clinching. For example: When we do 'Muay Thai' sparring, a lot of the focus is on hand playing, long knees, and 'outside' clinching. All clinch work aside from sparring we do gloveless. Inside clinching and pummeling with any type of glove can be cumbersome. Furthermore when competing, one isn't using big bulky training gloves so to clinch in training gloves is almost a moot point. I say: Treat yourself king.
