Ah the Rex.. I live only about 50 km from where she sank.. her wreck was there in some form until the 60s I think and I know multiple people who actually swear I’m up to her.. but alas, she was cut up for scrap..

no place for the Ile de France? the Saint Bernard of the seas? The ship that started the nautical art deco style, the only ocean liner that had it's end caught on camera in a big budget Hollywood movie? WOW!

My favorite ocean liner is RMS Britannic 1914 My favorite of the Olympic class liners She was robbed of her glory Just imagine if White Star Line what it had more ships in the 30s than canard It might have been white star and canard instead of canard and white star We might have seen the Olympic in Long Beach California instead the Queen Mary Only if the Britannic would have survived

To clarify about the interiors of the United States: Art Deco belonged to the 1930s. The United States, two decades later, had interiors in a style known as "mid century modern": a very different, more utilitarian style which was basically the look of the 1950s, not 1930s art deco. It's therefore wrong to say the United States was art deco.

Surprised Queen Mary 2 or QE2 is not even mentioned. They are my favourite ships apart from Olympic.

Thank you for such a great video. I had never seen that many pictures of the USS United States before now I understand why some people would call her spartan. The United States still remains one of my favorites.

Great video! Love all these ocean liners, but I do appreciate the art deco style interiors more than you do. That being said, all of the interiors are magnificent to me.

As a big ship enthusiast I agree with everything discussed in the video. Great channel. Greetings from Cape Town. My favourite is undoubtedly Normandie though..yes she was over the top..but hey isn't that what a massive ocean liner in those days was all about? Especially as she was the flagship of the stylish French

The ceilings on some of her public rooms were quite boring though, talking abt the smoking room, lounge, tea gallery & promenade. They're mostly blank white with nothing more on it. In her hull design and machinery though she definetely was a marvel of her time.

@chrisi06 yeah she wasn't perfect but her grand dining room remains unmatched in my view..if I had to choose one if the Edwardian ships it would be RMS Mauretania..prefer her dark wood rooms over the Lusitania...imagine it would feel very cozy on cold winter crossings

The Big U was absolutely not Art Deco. She was full on Mid Century Modern, though sadly pedestrian and a bit dull. Perhaps you’re thinking of her 1939 running mate, SS America? She was a more graceful and far more attractive inside. Passengers often described her as warm, over the United States.

Yea I’m admittedly not very familiar with that era of interior styling, as I don’t really find it attractive.

@@theshipenthusiast With good reason, most of the mid century modern ship interiors were pretty awful. I can’t think of one whose interiors were aesthetically pleasing from stem to stern. Not to mention the chaotic interior designs of the MCM Italian liners.😂

Nice video guys. Good choices. KWDG was built in 1897? She’s still Victorian. Big U is technically mid century modern in her interior design. But definitely agree her interiors, like France, were underwhelming.

In discussing the interior designs of these ships, you might try to get the styles right. Art Deco and the United States are strangers, as Art Deco was over long before the United States sailed for the first time. If you have never heard the term Mid-Century Modern, you would not understand that it pretty well defines the Interior designs of the United States. Art Deco defines the style of the Ile de France, not the United States, or the America, for that matter.

Admittedly, I know very little about that era of interior design, since I don’t find it attractive.
