I checked out the Hesu Demon speaker and shot it out against one of my favourite Celestion Vintage 30 - an 8 Ohm model from the year 2000.

Thanks for the comparison. I appreciate in particular that you spent some time to find the best spot to mic on the Hesu. I can’t stand that about most KZfaq speaker reviews/comparisons - not every speaker is going to want to be mic’d the same as everyone does with a v30 or even sound best with a 57. Moreover it’s okay to try different speakers, mics, mic placement etc. I may have to get one of these it sounds great.

The two-pronged approach seems like a good idea. The reference spot would be were most sound engineers toss a mic on most cabs after throwing a flashlight on your cab for 5 seconds, but the sweet spot is a highly subjective thing.

I love the naturally scooped tone of the Demon. I think it'd really benefit from a low pass filter. Unfiltered I prefer the V30 but I think the Demon would sound better than the V30 with some post-EQ. The V30 sounds like it has more upper mids/smoother trebles and would cut through a live mix better. The Demon sounds like the speaker I would rather do a death metal record with. The low-mid scoop sounds metal as fuck. I'd want the V30 for playing live though. The Demon sounds like it would have some ice picky or fuzzy trebles on stage. Definitely love having the V30 to compare it to. Your channel deserves so many more subscribers John, amazing work. Thank you!

Ever since I switched to Hesu I actually found it to be the opposite. I cut thru a mix with ease and they don’t have that top end fizziness you sometimes get with v30s but to each their own. We all got diff ears and preferences! I swore by v30’s for the past 20 years. The demon speakers benefit from a bit more resonance dialed in than a v30 imo but that’s just me. I found I had to make some slight adjustments to my eq when I made the switch but I finally found something that, for me, dethroned the V30

@@adriantravelian2216 for sure it’s also depending the company they were manufactured for. V30’s in a Mesa 4x12 at least older ones sound much different than ones in a Marshall or Orange etc… the v30’s in my Mesa 4x12 are much darker sounding than the ones out of a relatively new Orange I finally was able to get rid of. That thing weighed a F’ing ton I think the dude who sold it to me stuffed a dead body in it before or something i used it like 3 shows and just threw it in storage it was abnormally heavy. But I have no regrets switching over to Hesu. I will say tho I find that the Demon speakers as with any other speakers sound a lot diff depending the cab. Like the Hesu cab is built to suite those speakers so they sound they’re best thru that. But not all cabs/speakers/ amps work well together. I think some people think just bc v30’s are so widely used that those are gonna be the best match for whatever they’re head is.

Hesu demon speakers were finally the ones after god knows how many years and cabs loaded w v30’s to dethrone the v30. Being that it is in fact a bit brighter I found myself dialing in slightly more resonance than with a v30. I liked the speakers so much I actually got a Hesu vertical slant 2x12 and paired it with my 5150iii stealth and they sound great paired together. I find they offer more clarity and articulation than v30’s. I will say the Demon speakers sound best thru a Hesu cab as they are built specifically for those speakers and the cabs are built amazingly and don’t break the bank. However Hesu is not available in the US so you gotta go thru like Thomann or another European distributor. Even still to have a 2x12 shipped to NY was cheaper than most other comparable brands available right here in the states. I think I paid about $750 total that’s including shipping to get it delivered in a matter of a few days. Highly recommend getting one of their cabs if you’re gonna use the speakers the whole rig I have set up just sounds fantastic. I got rid of my Marshall 2x12 w old v30’s and my Orange 4x12 is collecting dust in storage as this has become my go to rig. Highly, highly recommend Hesu the cab and is built with the highest quality it’s an absolute blast to play

Nice one! i think finding the sweet for each speaker is the only way to fairly compare them, other than micing from far away or something like that which has its own problems. I think the HESU is cool, and for some of the riffs it sounded more appropriate, and for others the V30 sounded more suitable. I love these semi scientific videos - it is good to question the status quo find things out for yourself and not just trust "what the internet says" so I think these videos are gold. Look at what Jim Lill did with all his experiments, super popular.

Thanks, John, the Hesu seems a little tamed vs the V30 which sounds harsh comparatively. But they both sound great together. I would say something similar to that of the DV77 and V30 together. Still, the V30 perhaps would cut better in a mix.

Great video! They both sound good, but there's something in the Demon high end that's a little rough. Based on the SPAN plot is it that 8 kHz band that's nearly 10 dB higher than the V30? With a little cut there it might smooth out while keeping its character.

The 8 ohms seem fine, your sounds quite good as does a friend of mine's. Yet, my guitarist who had a cab with 2 16 ohms was unusable. I'm not exaggerating, it was so harsh and fizzy that it wasn't just annoying when mic'd but effectively in the room and we had to change all of his patches. The guy knows nothing about speakers but hasn't lasted a month before swapping them out. So, tread carefully when grabbing a pair of 16 ohms!

Hey man, appreciate the comparison. I prefer the demon over the v30. It just sounds better to my ears. Kind of clearer and defined. What I was wondering while watching your video is the following... What is your approach on how to change speakers in terms of tightening the bolts. I just changed the v30s in my Engl 412 pro to eminence swamp thangs and wizards which by the way sounds kick ass through my herbie. I've read about warped speaker frames due to overtightening which ultimately leads to damaged speakers. Do you use a torque wrench or do you just feel when it's torqued down enough. Being an engineer myself I got quite the torque wrench collection at home but ultimately I just tightened the bolts hand tight and tried to feel when it's right. What I noticed as well was that the v30s had 4 bolts per speaker and the eminence can take 8 bolts per speaker. So I went with the 8 bolt variant tightening in a criss cross pattern and quite cautiously. What are your thoughts? Cheers 👋🏼
@TheOtherJohnBrowne
@TheOtherJohnBrowne 5 ай бұрын
Hey man, thanks for the comment. So far I've just fastened them by hand but also used the cross fastening method. Same with the back panels. Doubt it makes a difference in this application but it's become a habit. I'd love to check out Swamp Thangs. Supposedly they are a bit like K100s which are great with Diezels. I had considered using a torque wrench in my big V30 shootout but decided I already had enough parameters to worry about. I have not damaged a speaker that way yet. At least not to my knowledge
@eygerywazzup
@eygerywazzup 5 ай бұрын
@@TheOtherJohnBrowne Good morning 😋 Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I'm also trying to cross fasten everything I can haha it has become a habit due to working on engines etc. The reason I abandoned the idea with the torque wrench was that on some fixation points on the speaker frame the bolt head didn't settle that well so I wanted to feel when it's right and then apply a little torque as even as possible. With a torque wrench you can't feel the sweet spot very well. Reg. The swamp thangs. Try them out. They're awesome. But I wouldn't exclusively fit swamp thangs to a cab but pair them with a brighter speaker, otherwise the overall tone can get a bit dark. That's why I was looking at the Hesu Demon and your video helped a great deal. Thanks again und ein schönes Wochenende 😋
