The Departed gets shit on by fans of the original, but I've seen em both. The Scorsese version I prefer cuz of the humor. Whomever rewrote it added a ton a humor. I love the fact that Scorsese obsessed for months over the ending, and came up with the rat, appearing in the last shot. To me, like you said, it's right up there with any movie Scorsese has done, and that's saying something. It's a bummer that Nicholson retired, but at least he did one last, great flick. Really looking forward to Killers Of The Flower Moon. Dig your channel. Groovy as hell.

I think Leo going head to head w Jack in several scenes really showed his acting ability at that point in time. He was great in this film.
@TTM9691
@TTM9691 Жыл бұрын
Really? I thought he was completely miscast, as he is in most Scorsese movies. He's a great actor, but there's not a single performance he has done in a Scorsese movie that has impressed me. He's done fantastic performances in other people's movies during the same time period: "Revolutionary Road", "Django Unchained", etc, but I just think he's just Marty's way of greenlighting movies in his old age. Even Nicholson - who has some fantastic moments, as usual - was a bit of disappointment in this one for me. But as far as Leo is concerned? You'd know he was the rat in two seconds just by looking at him. Damon was fantastic in this; of the two young dudes, I was way more impressed by his performance, which I did not have on my Bingo card when I bought my movie ticket. In general I think this is b-list Scorsese (but not c-list!). Definitely his weakest mob movie, by far.
@sidewaysoul
@sidewaysoul Жыл бұрын
Leo's best head to heads in a Scorsese film are in Gangs of New York against Daniel Day-Lewis. Jack was suitably villainous in The Departed, but he's no Bill The Butcher. That Leo held his own in those scenes is a testament to what he can do when the material serves him specifically (unlike Wolf of Wall Street or The Aviator, where he seems COMPLETELY miscast).
@TTM9691
@TTM9691 Жыл бұрын
@@sidewaysoul Daniel Day was definitely the better performance, and Leo was fine in Gangs Of New York, but man oh man, what a sloppy, overblown movie. Daniel Day is fantastic in it, and Leo is ok in it. He's nothing amazing in it, he's not a new teaching in acting in that movie, or any other Scorsese movie. He's a great actor, but he just never blows me away when he's with Marty. He always seems miscast. Leo as Howard Hughes? Give me a break, lol. I don't buy him in "The Departed" at all. I can take him in "Wolf Of Wall Street". He's Marty's way of greenlighting movies. At his age? You need Leo or you ain't going to get the big budgets.

The main reason for Jack Nicholson’s face being fairly hidden at the start of the movie was to hide his age. When he stepped into the light clearly for the first time, they did some de-aging work to make the rest of the movie (age difference) work smoothly.

Did Colin tell her? Does she even know who Frank Costello, let alone that's his voice on the tape? She literally listens to about 10 seconds of the CD and somehow understands that Colin's not all he says he is. It just comes off as contrived.....

The combo of this film and "Blood Diamond" that came out the same year, (maybe a yr apart, can't remember exactly), were the two films that completely transformed the way i saw Leo as an actor. He was great in The Aviator, Catch Me If You Can, and Gangs of New York, but for the most part i still didn't think much of him beyond being sort of a pretty boy for some reason. But these two movies were so good, and he was so excellent in them that he's since become one of my favorite actors of all time. Hell, i think these were his two best performances of his career thus far, and yet didn't win any awards for either - which is absolutely outrageous in my book!

I discovered The Dropkick Murphys through their opening song “I’m Shipping Off To Boston” and I’ve been a fan of those guys ever since. The question to myself is how did I not know of these guys being of Irish descent myself. But then again I was born and raised in the PNW instead of the east coast like Boston or even Chicago where Irish culture is more prevalent. I think Scorsese backlit Jack Nicholson to hide his age in the beginning, before de-aging CGI became common with the Disney Star Wars. The same can be said for the way Coppola backlit Marlon Brando in Apocalypse Now to hide his overweight appearance. Overall this is one of my favorite gangster/Scorsese/Leo/Damon/Nicholson and by far my favorite Marky Mark film. Well deserved Oscars for best director and picture.

Can't let it get to you or it'll just keep you down and hold you back. Besides, like I've told you lots of times here: we (your viewers/fans) got your back. Also, love the self-deprecating humor. It's right up my alley. Also a great coping mechanism, turning that negativity you feel into a way to entertain the audience. But like I said, just don't let it get to you. 😊

SEE THE ORIGINAL!!! "Infernal Affairs" 2002 Andrew Lau Scorsesee, the master of innovative cinematography remade a movie and somehow the camerawork was still better in the source material. Where "The Departed" shines is in capturing the essence of Boston; especially with the accents and characterizations, but the brilliant plotting and well written character arcs and flat-out dazzling shots were even stronger in the movie it was based on.

The foreign film this was based off is a Hong Kong trilogy called Infernal Affairs. The Departed has many scenes, shot for shot, taken from the first movie. However, this is one of the only times I will say, the remake (The Departed) is better than the original (Infernal Affairs 1). I do think both are worth a watch, but the writer for The Departed took all the best part and rewrote all the bad. And those rewrites is what makes The Departed a 10 fold better film.

I do remember even at the time people were saying Scorsese's Best Director win was more of an acknowledgement of his career greatness than this film specifically deserving the award. Personally, I think that he does a masterful job of interweaving the two leads while keeping the tension high and moving the plot forward relentlessly.

Look up here, Matt Damon talks about Jack during, the departed. He does a dead on jack immitation, and how jack, expands a scene!! For instance when he shoots the girl on the beack, is a riot!

My old roommate and I used to work in high end audio. That's a McIntosh (not Apple, but McIntosh the high end Binghamton, NY company) audio gear stack that Matt Damon has in his apartment. There some serious cash in there.

This gangster movie is a classic and the closing at 28:52 and ending death were both sucker punches.

I've seen this movie several times and I just noticed the symbolic rat in the last frame, on the window ledge looking out to the state house. 30:31

Saw it in the theatre. Was as shocked as anyone when the elevator door opened. I've been trying to tell the Re-actor world that someone needs to do "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" perhaps Leo D-Cap's greatest performance. After which I told by my friends....this guy is this generation's Clint Eastwood. Meaning he will be making movies and killing it from here on out. This was in 1995/96ish. I feel like I nailed that prediction.

It was crazy to go from almost 2 hours of anxiety to the high of Leo making his arrest, absolute low of him getting unceremoniously popped and then the soaring high of mark coming out of let field with the clutch play. Roller coaster

Not only never seen it, never even heard of it. Seen only one other reaction to it. So far it seems like one of those star-studded movies that DON'T make the cut with a major cluster-fuck or a plot but I'll check it out this weekend just to be sure.

This movie was a remake of the Hong Kong cinema flick called: 'Infernal Affairs,' which is leagues ahead of 'The Departed,' filmmaking, casting and acting wise. Like, one thee best films I've seen, which hollywood made a lesser version of. Watch it if you don't believe me. It's incredible and makes this film pale in comparison!!!!
