Asimetris: Palm oil has become one of the world's most ubiquitous resources - it's in our food, fuel, and cosmetics to name but a few. Yet the palm oil industry is responsible for committing environmental destruction on a massive scale in the tropical paradises of Indonesia, at the expense of local populations and wildlife. Can the developed world shake its addiction to palm oil?

This is the type of information that should be in the US mainstream media. It would (and will) influence my decisions when purchasing products which contain palm oil. It’s disheartening when I discover how badly people are suffering over product ingredients which I simply take for granted. If the demand for these products reduces, so will the suffering and injustice for these people.

Ceasing consumption is not the answer. You'd eventually hurt these poor farmers. Sustainability doesn't mean damaging practices cease from being carried out. It just mean that mitigating measures are put in place to limit the damage. Of course, it doesn't work because there's no incentive to be sustainable for the corporations as they have to spend more money and this additional cost chipped away their profit margin. The entire supply chain need to be revamped.

epSos de , Yes, palm oil is in so many products. Just as GMO corn syrup is also in so many products. BUT , we can collectively STOP buying it ! I no longer buy anything with corn syrup in it. Nor anything with commercial corn in it. Such as corn flakes cereal. We have to watch because corn syrup is not the only sweetener that is made from GMO corn ! Soy beans are also GMO so I no longer buy any vegetable oil. Even Canola oil is now GMO. Olive oil is still clean. Much wheat is also now GMO ! Yup , no more Wheaties ! And no more bread. I am too fat anyway . If I can get some certified non-GMO wheat seed I can always grow my own patch of wheat and grind my own flour. Which by including the whole wheat berry is much healthier for me anyway. Haven't you ever wondered why the settlers of the 1800's were so strong ? They consumed the whole wheat berry. It is the modern corporations that has learned how to separate the wheat berry into other products , which give us less nourishment.

Boycotting Palm oil in consumer goods is not enough. Consumers must reach out to companies through social media, websites, emails and let them know why you will no longer support their product and why so called sustainable palm oil is not a good alternative either. It’s vital companies hear from consumers.

@noway4517

Well if you never eat any sweets or bread or use cosmetics, then I guess it can be avoided. But I think the point was it is difficult because you have to look on every product if it has palm oil in it. And some people have to go eat something in their lunch break because they can't cook at their place of work. You can take food from home that is already prepared, but you will be called weird by your colleagues and if you also have kids, it will be difficult to get enough time to also cook for your lunch break, so it is not easy at all.
@nikkid4890
@nikkid4890 6 жыл бұрын
no way That's exactly my point. Not that I don't know how to avoid it, but rather that it is shocking just how much palm oil is used in almost everything! There is almost nothing that it isn't hidden in. I even have to be careful of certain brands of peanut butter. I can't touch margerine and have to use 100% pure butter (which I love anyway 🌹) So many soaps contain it too. As you say, it could be in virtually all cosmetics. It truly is difficult to avoid it unless I check the ingredients of absolutely everything! It's tricky at a birthday or whenever invited out to eat. I stay in hotels for business too. But I just accept it as a way of life now. It worries me more that this industry is decimating wild life, and the only reason why I know the scale and manitude is because I know where they use it. Worse, sometimes in food, they label it as hydrolised vegetable oil! The destruction of natural vegetation and habits is on scale that boggles the mind, for an insatiable market. Thanks for sharing your understanding of the practicalities faced that such an allergy requires.

You know nothing about my life, I was just stating that it is a choice you have to make and that is is difficult to do because we are used to using convenient fast methods of getting food and there is a pressure from the rest of society. I do cook most of my food myself and I don't mind bringing it with me somewhere else, but I don't think it is easy to make the transition so I understand why someone would find it difficult.

The problem is not the palm oil itself. It's the greed of those corporations and the greed of the farmers themselves too. And the government also turning a blind eye over what's happening. But still the one with the bigger role to play is the government. If those companies did what they're doing in Europe or America, they'd already be insolvent right now paying all the fines.

Journeyman TV, why sentence your vulnerable sources to imminent death by exposing their identities? This kind of behavior by media people is not responsible. Your story loses its value when you casually and recklessly expose poor, vulnerable people to the threats of powerful corporations and politicians. Someone could easily go 'get' them. The least you can do is cover their faces and identifiable features and clothes. I thought 'protection of your sources' was part of professional journalism. Please do not add to their woes. They gave you information for free. Don't make them pay with their lives for doing so.

This is tragic to watch, especially because one must realize when seeing this that no matter where one lives, this will affect a neighborhood nearby sooner than one might think. Given that the local governments are not providing any sort of legal or other redress to the landowners; that the gov'ts are subsidizing the price of palm oil, and that several international companies are profiting handsomely from this ongoing process, one might well wonder when we will start to see an exodus of economic refugees from this area of the world joining the current flood. At a yield of over 10K lbs/acre, and a lifespan of 25 years, the profit potential that drives this process is not going to subside in the near future.

Developed countries will always have something negative to report especially when it comes to agro products that can only be produced in the developing world and not in their own countries. First it was natural rubber, then palm oil, followed by cocoa and coffee, and shrimp, talapia....what's next? Cashews? Avacodos? Salmon? These developing countries are trying to improve the living conditions for their people. Give them a chance to catch up.

this video such as black campaign for Palm oil..FYI there's a trade war between Palm oil and any other vegetable oil such as sunflower oil ,soybean oil etc.. if we compare Palm oil with any other vegetable oil in terms of the needs of land, Palm oil is most effective, most efficient plant to produce vegetable oil for the world,because it can produce 4 ton/ha, meanwhile the sunflower oil just produce 0,6 ton/ha and soybean oil 0,4 ton/ha.. so why we don't talk about 122 million hectare deforestation of massive effect by soybean oil, we even fuss Palm oil with just 16 million hectare, if we truly adheres to the principle of trade fairness, we won't do this to Indonesia.

Journeyman, You Did *VERY WELL* job, half of it it's true, but in my experience, there is some other variable that causes these farmer problems. When we said that they barely made it daily because low wage/low paid it's doesn't just that simple, there is some variable like they spend money on cigarettes/tuak (coconut fermentation drink). Safety equipment it's not something that they can't afford to buy requirement safety but they just don't want to make it more complicated, they aren't comfortable using this equipment (I talk about farmer outside the Company employee) so they end ed up not using proper equipment. RSPO certified? Hell No, this is far from what you Europeans expect. *In palm oil farm except for big company like Wilmar etc, I can guarantee you that even the PRIVATE OWNER FARM still never heard about RSPO certification.* In 22:51 "I don't know anything, I just want to sell", this is 100% true. I'm not saying this is right but they don't have the education and the profit are not that much so they could spend on high quality or certification rules. Otherwise Journeyman thanks so much for this documentation, gives me different side point of view now.

Cadbury milk chocolate (the stuff made with vegetable oil) in the U.K. used to be the best. Then Kraft bought Cadbury and the Dairy Milk bar doesn't taste the same. Nestle ruined KitKat years ago- I call it Marmite cos it tastes 'meaty'. Mars Co. is about the only one left that tastes like it always has. Palm oil and other CHEAP inged.s are the reason.
