The E-Waste Curse: The deadly effect of dumping E-waste in Pakistan
Pakistan has become an illegal dumping ground for some of the 50 million tons of e-waste created each year. Karachi's poor earn a living from the toxic detritus, but the vicious cycle of consumption could prove fatal.
In Pakistan, the massive arrival of electronic waste has created an informal substance economy that feeds 150,000 people. The country's poor salvage what they can from the cast-offs of the electronic revolution: copper, steel, brass. Nassir is one who has cashed in on the opportunities found in old cables and hard-drives. "It’s a good business. I have more and more work", he says. Yet workers pay the price for a few grams of copper; 4 million people die every year because of electronic waste and recycling workers have the lowest life expectancy in Pakistan. In his recycling shop, Akhbar earns 2€ on a good day. It feeds his family of six, but his health has suffered. "This job is dangerous. It’s very toxic". And the toxic legacy is far-reaching - "It’s a catastrophe...especially for the children", warns Saba, an activist for the WWF. "They will continue to live here and be poisoned, it’s dangerous for them and it’s dangerous for the next generations". In our relentlessly consumerist world, can the global poor be saved from the toxic trade in e-waste?

Very poor translation and purposely mistranslated to make it even more coarse and dramatic.. For example at 11.00 the man say 'here people work and here is the place where people get their sustenance from..' the translator says..'this is where people work and people die'.

Mostly they r kind of censoring it so as to direct it their way, eg the fisherman in the end was saying something like that the fish dont come here because of cows shit and other waste which fill the shores or seaside but the translation was its because of pollution than the correspondent diverts the conversation and says what about the pollutant water coming out of the drains and than he says something like yes that also kills the fish. so mostly its like that and when people r supporting their work or claims it translated like we dont have any other way, please help us we r doomed etc when in reality they have said more things @jae lynn even the wwf workers shown here clearly shows they have less experience and its all propaganda type u can clearly see her smiling when the two r talking their language is also like its not natural its like the director or cameraman said heres what points we want out of the conversation say these things ok action. All of this could be shown in a better way but sadly this documentary was just selfish, i am all for showing problems n they have clearly shown them but dont censor things to prove just one point. Basically its not because of just e-waste but they choose to censor those things tunnel visioned viewer to their goal.

Recycling is a good business and better for environment, However the people who engage such job should have some training. Many electronic parts have very long life span that can be reused/ resurrected for better purposes. In the video recycling techniques are very primitive and reduces the yield dramatically. For example those toroid transformers are a lot more valuable than extracting the copper. 3 months training prior to recycling job will be very beneficial, recycling can be done most profitable way. Workers can make 12 to 18x more by working only 6 hours a day without fumes and toxic exposure

Knowing that a large amount of metal is used in electronics, gold and silver, America is doing the same. Unhappily companies like Apple is passing them selves off as being eco friendly and selling their electronics to these countries like ComChina, an India. That medicine is probably what's causing the stomach aches and the pimples. I wonder if those pills are even real. I seriously wouldn't be surprised if those pills were made from ground up computer pcb boards or rock dust. I'm wondering most about how they afford that place. Do they pay rent, property taxes, do they pay income tax? The mother said she's been there for her whole life. I really hope the person behind the camera gave them a few hundred bucks for their time and also take the lady to see a doctor. When I was in India, I got a rash of little red spots on my feet and I went to my friends family doctor, he looked just like a normal Indian. He met us out side, looked at my feet, I think he gave me a few pills (probably the same pills she's taking, ha ha ha ha) and that was that. The rash went away.
